Not sure if anyone is still around. Sadly we had to put down our rat terrier, Izzy, on Saturday. Probably the hardest thing I have done. I know it was the best decision but it still hurts. I didn't just lose my dog, I lost one of my best friends.

So give all of your dogs extra love tonight. Take care.

Greetings folks! I found this community this morning while doing the "6 degrees of Lj shuffle"! (Whoohoo! a community devoted to my favorite breed!!) :)
I see that I already know some of the members here, but not all, so I will introduce myself.
My husband and I live in NH, and have been happy owners of 2 wonderful ratties for the last 3 years.

My little Jada Princess thinks that when she naps with me, she should sleep on my head!

I woke up with her on my head, and fortunately had my phone close so I could snap this picture before she bolted.

Scout is 18 months old and usually well behaved. He can be testy though. He does not like having precious things taken away (food or something he KNOWS he shouldn't have) and will growl and snap, even at us. He snapped once when he was on our bed with us and my daughter approached to pet him. We knocked him off the bed and only let him in now if nobody else is around. Actually almost never. And he snarls and snaps at other dogs if he's dumped into a situation (dog park or day care) and they rush at him. Once he has a chance to check out new dogs he plays and they get along fine.

To counter this we have been making him do a lot more tricks before getting things, even dinner, keeping him off furniture and making him wait for us to go through doors first so he knows who's boss. Our daughters have been doing these things too, so he sees them as superior to himself.

Then the other day we were doing yard work at my dad's house and some friends were helping. Two of them were new to Scout, a man and an 18-year-old girl. We had him tied up on a long leash so he could be outside with us while we worked. We've done this before for for work parties with new people and he was very well behaved. He was right in the midst of us chilling and soaking up the sun when, without warning, the girl got down on the ground in Scout's face and started to put her hands around his head. I think she was trying to play with him but he bit her right on the nose! She's fine and not angry. Her dad actually blamed her for getting in the dog's face. There have been no legal repercussions other than a 10-day quarantine by the health department.

My question is, other than obedience training, what can we do to keep this from happening again? WILL it happen again? Obedience training only teaches him that we, his family, are dominant to him. With other people all bets are off, right? Everything I read says to socialize him with all kinds of people, but I don't know what all kinds of people might do, especially children. Is this normal for rat terriers?

I'm just worried sick. He is otherwise a very sweet, playful, loving dog. Somebody tell me how to handle this, please?

As a sister community to ratemydog, I created dogkind. It's a community for the photographic celebration of the human-dog relationship with no competetive element whatsoever. Just a place to post photos that you took yourself or found elsewhere (and credit) that reflect the positive aspects of our bonds!

Cross-posted.

Meet Izzy! We adopted her from the humane society this past November. We adopted her because she was used as a breeding dog at a puppy mill in Northern WI. She has had an extremely crappy life so far, but now she is home and we are trying to make her life great.

She is pretty much an angel! Even though she never lived in a home before, she does not have accidents, tear up the house, or anything. However, she does have a few "problems" that I need help with.

First, do rat terriers like to play with certain toys? I know that some breeds don't like to catch, for example. We are having a hard time getting her to play, most likely becuase she has never had real toys before. She has finally started to chew on one of the many bones we have purchased for her. What is your dogs favorite toy??

Also, she has extreme seperation anxiety and it seems to be getting worse. We even set up schedules so she is not alone for more than 4 or 5 hours, but she still howls. We have practiced coming in and out of the door (like they show you on the dog shows), leaving the TV or music on, and not making a scene and leaving very quietly. We also give her a treat most of the time...but she eats it so fast that she cries when I am locking the door. I have tried to get her to play with a Kong, but she didn't seem to like it. Do you think that buying a liver or other meat flavor would help?

Thanks for any advice you can give. I love her so much and I don't want her to have so much anxiety!
