Do you want to learn more about reproductive freedom and social justice? Or are you a longtime activist looking for inspiration and rejuvenation? Whether you are new to the movement or a veteran organizer, join us at the 21st annual national conference “From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom.?

On March 30-April 1, 2007, campus and community activists will be gathering at Hampshire College to unite for reproductive justice. We are expecting a large turnout—last year there were over 1000 participants from the US and abroad. We offer more than 30 workshops and trainings. Conference speakers address reproductive freedom as it relates to a broad range of social justice initiatives including economic justice, health care reform, racial equality, the war on terrorism, freedom from violence, youth liberation, civil liberties, and LGBTQ rights.

Over the weekend, you will deepen your understanding of issues you already know about, make new connections, and unite with others who are passionate about working for social justice.

Free housing (in Hampshire dorms) and food are provided for the conference weekend. Free childcare and sign language interpretation is also available.

"On January 3, 2006, 18-year-old Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi was sentenced to death for murder by court in Iran after she stabbed one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 16-year-old niece in a park in Karaj (a suburb of Tehran) in March 2005. She was seventeen at the time. Iran is signatory to international treaties which forbid them to execute any one under the age of 18; however they continue to do so."

Nazanin Fatehi, is sentenced to hang to death for defending herself and her niece from 3 rapists.
Because this trial has reached an international audiance, there will be a re-trial on January 10th. Please sign the petition to help save Nazanin's life.

Click here to sign the petition.

Click here to learn more about the trial.

She was granted a re-trial because of the international attention she's gotten.
Please support the fight for Nazanin's life, you can make a difference.

PLEASE RE-POST!

P.S. I'm sorry for spamming, but I really think this is something that needs to be spread.

This community is a place where we come to gain spiritual growth and a better understanding of each other. And hopefully, deeper friendships. All while sharing our insights into various Bible readings.

Every two or three days, there will be a new reading posted along with some questions. These questions are designed to help us get to know each other and examine our own spirit while delving into a deeper understanding of what God wants for us.

Remember, there are no wrong answers. When you comment, please do so with understanding and the motive of holding each other up as we learn and grow together. Please do not comment if the goal is to tear down someone's thoughts. Debate is welcome, yet use discression.

All I have to say is... YOU GO PERSON WHO WROTE THE ARTICLE!!

This article is stellar! Take about 5 minutes to sit down and read this!

Excerpt:

"In fact, I will stop short of making the claim that the Bible condemns or supports abortion at all. It does neither. The condemning and supporting comes not from the words of the Bible but from leaders within our Culture of Christianity who use verses out of context -- the same way I just did to support abortion -- to support their views against abortion. The condemning and the supporting comes not from the Scriptures but from average Christians who take the easy way out, accepting one or two verses of the Bible as proof that their leaders are speaking the gospel truth. The condemning and supporting comes not from God but from those who do not take the time to read the Bible, in its own context, and decide for themselves the meanings therein."

I AM ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED AT SOUTH DAKOTA RIGHT NOW!! I wrote a letter to the governor, Rounds, and to my governor, Matt Blunt. If you want to know how to write Rounds and your own governor, let me know and I'll help you out.

...I just cannot understand how they don't realize the injustice of what they have just done...

11:37 am - possibility of late-term abortion ban

tnsechick
I will admit this. I am not terribly opposed to any ban on late-term abortions. Now, in my belief system, a person doesn't really get their "soul" until they inhale their first breath of air free from their mother--the ancient concept of ruach, the Breath of God which gives life. Also, it takes until VERY late in a pregnancy for a fetus to be viable and able to survive outside the mother.

However, late-term abortion is just plain icky, isn't it? I'm not talking about medically-necessary abortion. For example, my best friend growing up would have had a baby brother, except an ultrasound revealed that his brain had developed outside of his skull. Her mom went ahead and had a late-term abortion, which -- while a traumatic experience for the famil -- was, I'm certain, the best thing to do and saved them all a lot of awfulness later had she carried him full-term then delivered him dead.

No, not stuff like that. There is the supposition that some women have late-term abortions just because they don't want the baby. I have never actually heard of a real account of this happening, and can't imagine any woman or girl wanting to put themselves through something like that. But, let's say it does happen. It's not really something I'd cry over a woman losing the right to do.

HOWEVER. That said. You know what they say....the changing of 1 law leads us down a slippery slope. What do you guys think of the "slippery slope" argument?

2:18 pm - do tell

tnsechick
Hello. I'd like to join such a community as this...if it's for real. I recently heard that, for example, am_i_pregnant is just a front so people can blast women for being "stupid" about their birth control.

I'm seriously both Christian and pro-choice. Here, I have a journal archive from a year ago (http://tnsechick.livejournal.com/2005/03/18/) where I expound upon why my religious beliefs have convinced me that God is not against abortions.

So, is everybody having a good experience with this community? Not a front?

1:26 pm - Just wanted to Share

shoomy2003
Hi guys, I'm new here and I just wanted to share with you a recent article that I had published in the newspaper regarding Roe vs. Wade.

http://www.columbiatribune.com/2006/Jan/20060111Comm008.asp

If you have any thoughts on the subject, let me know. I think that everyone should write their opinion to their local papers to show some support for the local pro-choice community and let the public know that not everyone who is pro-choice is a nasty, Jesus-hating liberal.

I think that it might do some good, really.

11:29 am - what did it mean?

pxlt
i just posted a simple survey in my journal, very similar to one that was recently on Beliefnet (with a couple of more options that i think are key).

it will only take a second to vote, i'd really appreciate it if you did. i totally admit i am trying to get lots of people to answer the poll, but i think its a valid enough issue for the results to be interesting.

tsunami poll

the survey concerns the role you believe God played, if any, in the loss of 150,000+ people during the Indian Ocean tsunamis.

i'm curious to see what everyone thinks; atheists, agnostics, and especially believers. comments are welcome as well.

(the rest of the entry is about some of the skepticism i've developed as i went from Christianity to agnosticism a few years ago... hopefully no one will take any offense at what i've said, that was absolutely not my intention.)

thanks!!

1:14 am - Can you guess which idiot stated this?

debu_chan
X-posted to "godisprochoice" and "prochoice"

I know what the underlaying problem is---that's the point. While the pro-abortion advocates are against anything that will educate a woman about the choice she is making, they are not willing to make society, pre- and post-roe, a place where a woman won't feel that desparate.

Where do they pull this crap from? Pro-liars are the ones making women feel that desperate. Not those of us who try to educate women about contraceptives and other methods of birth control. Not those of us who champion the right to choose. Right to Choose: Whether or not a woman can choose to carry to term, either to keep or adopt out, or to abort her pregnancy. Just because one supports the right to choose something they disagree with doesn't make that person pro-That Choice Only. We are PRO-CHOICE because we support ALL choices, so long as the woman gets to make the choice.

If a woman doesn't realize that pregnancy means she has a human fetus inside her, which they seem to think most women don't realize, then I suppose she is an idiot. If a woman doesn't realize that aborting the human fetus inside her involves killing the human fetus inside her, which they seem to think most women don't realize, then I suppose she is an idiot. If a woman doesn't realize that any form of surgery comes with its own risks, which they seem to think most women don't realize, then I suppose she is an idiot. They want to treat women like idiots, then want to turn around and claim they are doing it for our own good. We are not children, and they are not our parents. When you go chipping away at women's rights instead of actually going to the source of the problem, UNWANTED PREGNANCY, you drive women to desperation. Desperate women will do some crazy things. We need the pro-liars to work with us, not against us. If they want to prevent abortion, stop fighting the education, proper distribution, and use of contraceptives. It doesn't matter if you believe women shouldn't be having sex except with a husband that they married in the eyes of YOUR god. Not everyone follows your religion, nor should they be expected to. Not everyone follows your guidelines for life, nor should they be expected to. If you don't want to do that much, then when you are standing outside those clinics, have your lawyers with you and the proper papers to adopt that fetus on the spot. Provide proof that you will pay for all the medical bills while she is gestating. Provide proof that you will accept responsibility for the costs of bringing her child into the world, and that you will be the childs parent once it is born. If you aren't willing to make the sacrifices, then you should shut up and back off. I'm sick and tired of these anti-abortion + pro-adoption people who haven't adopted the first damn child ranting about how SO MANY people want to adopt while the system is OVERFLOWING with unwanted children who simply want to be adopted, by anyone at this point. I've heard of states that offer to drop certain fees as an incentive to get people to adopt. The news in this area runs a special each week for an adoptable child to come on the air and plead his/her case for why they deserve your love and your parentage. It shouldn't have to be this way. Every child should be a wanted child. There should be no children who have no home, no parent, no love. It disgusts me that these "pro-family" people don't seem to care to provide homes for the thousands of unwanted chldren out there. Oh my, and the excuses they provide... "It's just too expensive!" So is carrying to term in comparison to aborting. "Well, I just want children of my own." Most people do, which makes it a moot point to carry to term and put a child up for adoption. "I'm not ready yet." Neither are most women who have abortions, and don't feel like adding to the overwhelming surplus of unloved and unwanted children. The list can go on and on.

How do we get these people to understand that there is a happy middleground? How do we get them to understand that they have to be proactive on finding homes for these kids? How do we get them to understand that making abortion illegal and demonizing women is NOT the key to stopping abortion? How do we get them to understand that abortion will only be rare when every woman has easy access to proper contraceptives, and until every child is a wanted child? My sister works with the foster care system, so don't anyone dare say every child is wanted. It's not true. I see kids all the time who have only had FOSTER parents in their lives, and it was always foster parents who didn't want them either. My sister and I have shed many tears over this. I shouldn't have to look into the eyes of a child who says, "I don't mind that no one loves me. Jesus loves me, and I pray he'll come get me soon." No child should go to bed praying to die in their sleep!

I'm so glad that I found this community!

I'm a presbyterian who is Pro-Choice attending a private Catholic High School (plaid skirts and everything, but contrary to popular belief... they are very UN-hot looking.) and because of this, I hear constantly about how abortion is the worst thing on the planet.

One of my teachers is voting for Bush solely because he is Pro-Life.

So hopefully, this community will help this liberal keep her sanity in a world of conservatives ready to flame her at a moments notice.

Pro-life is misogyny.
