I just decided (in the shower, just now) that I'm having a Mary Kay party at my office on Wednesday afternoon. I've been nervous to set one up because I think my office has policies about that sort of thing, but my boss is out of town for the week for vacation, so I figure now is the perfect time as long as I keep it kind of on the downlow.

I'm going to email some of my female co-workers with something like, "I'm so excited! My samples of the new Mary Kay Private Spa collection are in, and y'all just have to try them. I know with our schedules it can be hard to get together one-on-one, so I'll be in the Video Conference Room on Wednesday afternoon, 7/2/03, between 5:45 and 6:15 PM. Stop by, pick your favorite flavor of body lotion, and enter to win a door prize! Oh, don't forget to ask me how you can enter to win $10,000 CASH. See you there!"

Or something like that. I'm still nervous about my boss finding out, even after the fact, but unless I want to sit down with her and have a long talk about the details of the policy (and still possibly be told "no"), this is my best opportunity, and I'm going to take it!

Everyone who comes in will get a sample of something - they'll draw from a grab bag, whatever I have around. Spa samples, lipstick samples, whatever I feel like rounding up. Don't know what I'm doing yet for the door prize...ideally it would be something very desirable, but not readily available for customer order. I just don't happen to have any of those lying around at the moment. ;) Any suggestions?

I'll have skincare stuff available to do back-of-the-hand facials if someone wants to, but mostly I'm going to concentrate on the new smellies. My goal with this party is to get my face in front of people as their Mary Kay Consultant, not just their receptionist. I'm not going to spend tons of moolah - at the most I'll probably buy some good cookies and give people quarters to go buy Cokes out of the machine ($.25 each).

What do you think? Any ideas?

*does the Happy Dance of Capitalism*

( Whoo, this got long!Collapse )

Let's put it this way: I had $185 in sales, including two basics and a Satin Hands pampering set, and more sales to come as I help Laura pick out the perfect glamour shades for herself. *twirls with GLEE* And all because I took action on a name that was literally dropped into my life.

...OH! I would be completely out of line if I didn't thank cody_graham for her very generous donation of a nail-care bag for our door prize. *hugs Cody 'til she squeaks* It was a product bonus she earned for placing an inventory order when she started her business, and it was absolutely awesome of her to let us use it as an incentive, even though she had to fulfill other obligations at the convention. *hugs Cody more*

Next up: mailing TimeWise sampler cards and Look Books to my two names in Oklahoma, rounding up a guest for Master Consultant (This Saturday, y'all! Never miss an opportunity for training!), and prepping for a photo shoot on Saturday afternoon, for which I'll be doing THREE makeup looks on the model. Hoo-wah!

[I'm crossposting this to marykay - sorry for any duplication.]

WOW! On a whim, I posted an advertisement for the Spring Fever Sweepstakes in my journal, and I received SIX sign-ups within two days! This was even with the ad being not much more than an aside, buried within my other comments, which tells me my friends are really reading my journal, and not shying away from the Mary Kay stuff. :D

Here's what I said, if you want to post something similar in your journal:

"Oh! Speaking of Mary Kay, did you know you could win a FREE Saab convertible? All you have to do is go to my website and click to enter the Spring Fever Sweepstakes. The deadline for the contest is June 15, so get clicking! (By the way, my favorite part of the contest is that if you win a car, I win one, too. *g*) They're also giving away $100 a day to random entrants, so even if you don't get the big prize, you might end up with a little extra spending money. =)"

If you don't have a website yet, you can give customers your Consultant Number and direct them to the Mary Kay website. That way you'll get entered for the FREE Saab along with them.

I'm so excited! I have the names and addresses of six people I didn't have before, and all I did was open my mouth about Mary Kay. :)

5:41 pm - My I-Story

elina
I had never considered the Mary Kay opportunity the first time it was offered to me. I had never even used the products! I was invited to a meeting by a new member of my choir, and the only reason I agreed to go was because she told me they would be having a skincare class. I'll level with you - I'm very vain about my skin.

Unfortunately, the first week I was scheduled to go, I had to cancel. I don't remember why; I think I was sick, or tired, or something squirrelly like that. But I felt bad for letting my friend down, so I agreed to go the next week, even though they wouldn't be doing skincare that week. Instead, they were celebrating...well, I don't even remember what, now, but they had cake and punch, and we watched a video about the history of the company, and it was all a lot of fun. When they started talking about how the business operates, I was skeptical, but halfway through the presentation I started thinking, "Wow, Debbie would love that," and, "Ooh, my mom needs one of those," and I got a terrible sinking feeling.

That night, I asked a million questions, and afterwards I talked to Sharon Meine, Christi's Sales Director, and believe me when I tell you that I grilled her. I just knew there had to be a catch; there had to be some reason this opportunity was too good to be true! As it turned out, though, the opportunity was very true, and I found myself considering something I hadn't even heard of twenty-four hours before.

I went home and - of course - talked to my husband. I showed him all the paperwork I had collected that night with the facts about the company, and asked him if he thought I would be successful at something like this. Now, bear in mind: I was an administrative assistant with no history of ever accomplishing anything great. I could talk to people, I could charm the heck out of them, but I had no idea whether I could sell anything to them. And when I asked Matt for his opinion, I was counting on him to tell me he didn't think this was for me. Imagine my shock when he had the nerve, the unmitigated gall to tell me he believed I could do this!

Once we determined that Matt had more faith in me than I had in myself, and that I wasn't going to be able to use him as an excuse, I only had one more obstacle to overcome on my path towards Mary Kay: I had never tried the makeup. I had been paying $29 every six weeks or so for a bottle of Lancome foundation because that was the only line I could find that met my demanding standards for quality and had a shade light enough for my fairfairfair skin, and I was not about to settle for anything less. When I had my first Mary Kay facial the next Saturday, I was delighted to discover I could get a better foundation, for less than half the price, as well as the perfect shade of concealer. I was already sold on the marketing plan, so once I became sold on the products, I signed my agreement and wrote my check.

That was in May of 2002, and I've had an interesting year since then. I went to Seminar that year, and walked away absolutely inspired by the awesome women there. I've had ups and downs in my business, but they were always the ups and downs I chose, the opportunities and challenges I made for myself. Over the past few months, building my team and nurturing my girlfriends to success has given me fulfillment and self-knowledge I've never had before. As I work towards Directorship, at my own pace but preferably quickly, I'm keeping in mind my goals of supporting my family with Mary Kay and leaving behind the wage-slave world.

Hi! Well, after a few false starts, I finally got this community working as, you know. A community! Yaaaaaay!

*g* Okay, I may be a little too excited about that. What can I say? It's late, I've been up a long time...and I'm easily amused, which I don't think is such a bad thing. ;)

What I'm picturing for this community is for it to be a place where we can talk about our thoughts, hopes, visions, and dreams for ourselves and our careers with Mary Kay. I don't think we need to require that all posts be relentlessly upbeat, but I hope you won't mind if we offer positive spin and proactive suggestions as well as sympathy if you're feeling your way through an opportunity for growth. I'd like for us to share business ideas, learning experiences, and - of course - our successes and accomplishments as we grow into this business together.

What would y'all like to see in this community?
