A Journey in Which I Gradually Lose Track of What Uzbekistan Is
Chapter 35 â What Will the Future Look Like?
Back at Bed & Breakfast âNaziraâ in Bukhara, I sit in the courtyard with Bekhruz, a young man who works in IT, and we talk about technology and the future.
I tell him a story from Japanâs online world: people sometimes invent astonishingly elaborate identities for themselves, presenting themselves as highly educated, glamorous, and successful. In the age of AI, I wonder, will people increasingly seek romantic partners who are themselves artificial? AI can become an extraordinarily attentive companion, learning how to please us and responding to our emotional needs.
Bekhruz laughs. Japanâs birth rate will probably continue to fall, he says. Perhaps something similar is already happening quietly in Uzbekistan. Then he asks a question that seems to hover over our conversation: what will the world be like ten years from now? Perhaps people will be living on Mars.
We talk about AI. I explain that I use several AI systems, each with a different personality. ChatGPT is astonishingly knowledgeable, yet sometimes childish or mischievous; perhaps it has adapted to me. Claude makes my writing sound like that of a professor at an elite university, which is not quite my style. Gemini is more moderate, and its research advice is often remarkably apt.
Then I tell Bekhruz something that surprises him. ChatGPT was the one that strongly recommended Uzbekistan as my next destination. After traveling through Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam earlier this year, I had been writing essays about food, music, literature, and the people I encountered along the way. Somewhere within those essays, ChatGPT suggested, lay a growing interest in the state and in the ways societies are formed. Uzbekistan might offer me a chance to explore those questions further.
And so here I am.
Bekhruz is astonished that I actually came to Uzbekistan because an AI recommended it. I tell him that I do not carry a smartphone, and that once I arrived, my journey became off-beat and full of improvisation.
Bekhruz says nothing for a moment. He lights a cigarette.
Then he repeats the question he asked earlier:
âWhat will this world be like ten years from now?â
To be continued.
