A Journey in Which I Gradually Lose Track of What Uzbekistan Is
Chapter 22 â Boarding a Sleeper Train from Bukhara
On the morning of September 3, the tenth day of my journey through Uzbekistan, I wait at Bukhara railway station for my early-morning sleeper train to Khiva. There, I meet two young Japanese women. After days of linguistic solitude, I am unexpectedly delighted to hear Japanese. One of them, Yuka from Hakodate, tells me about her previous trip to Nepal and an unexpectedly long bus journey caused by a collapsed road.
We briefly exchange guidebooks: my English-language Central Asia guidebook from Lonely Planet and her Japanese Chikyu no Arukikata: Uzbekistan. She asks where I will travel next. I tell her that I have no idea. Perhaps, I say, I will discover my next destination while writing this travelogue.
Soon we part and I board the sleeper train. As the train begins to move, I find myself thinking again about the Iranian man I met in Bukharaâand about the tangled histories of Soviet Uzbekistan and revolutionary Iran. Once again, the journey leaves me with more questions than answers.
