Episode 4: Farewell
"Ahhh, I slept well... The unpleasant noises from the sky have stopped, and lots of people have returned to town."
I stretched out on the veranda as usual. But even though the surrounding town has become lively, no one has returned to this mansion yet. My fur has become dirty with mud and sand without me even realizing it, and I've become quite the old cat.
But I continued to wait here patiently. In that garden that smelled of sweet roses, I huddled together, day after day.
And so, after many years had passed and the seasons had changed outside...
The front door rattled open, and I heard the familiar sound of footsteps. I rushed over, and there she was, dressed in the same beautiful kimono as she had been back then. Beside her was a little girl who had grown up so much and become quite plump.
"Oh, you're still alive...! You did so well, you were so brave."
She hugged me tightly, not caring at all that I was covered in mud. It was warm, gentle, and a comforting feeling that I loved so much it brought tears to my eyes. She scratched behind my ears repeatedly and said so many things to me, like, "You must have been lonely," and "Thank you for protecting me."
Then, a little while later, a new man came to live with their grown-up daughter. He was their son-in-law. But when he saw me, he made a really disgusted face and said, "Ugh, a cat." I hadn't done anything wrong, though.
Then, my beloved girlfriend fell ill and couldn't get out of bed.
"No..."
I snuggled close to her bedside and never left her side. I sang songs with all my might, hoping that the sound of my purring would cheer her up even a little. She gently stroked my head with her weak hand and quietly closed her eyes. Even when I rubbed my face against hers and said, "Hey, wake up," she didn't wake up at all. She just continued to sleep peacefully.
That's when I was huddled up and curled up like that.
"Hey, how long are you going to stay there? Get out!"
That cat-hating groom grabbed me with a scary voice and threw me outside. The front door slammed shut, and I was all alone.
A cold rain has started to fall, but I'm not sad. That's because the last warmth of her hugging me tightly is still clearly etched into my fur.
I began walking slowly towards the gentle forest of the imperial tomb in front of the mansion.
