    Episode 5: Earthquake

"Ahhh, I slept well. It's thrilling and feels great to take a nap in the shade of the garden, trying not to get caught by my new owner."

I'm a new generation of cat born in this mansion. I grew up hearing many wonderful stories from my grandfather cat, like, "There used to be a beautiful rose in this house that came all the way across the sea..."

However, as time went on, the new owner, the son-in-law, didn't seem to like the old house very much. He replaced the tiled roof that his grandparents loved, and painted over the beautifully painted walls with white paint. Thanks to that, the house no longer leaked, but some of its old charm faded, and the house looked rather lonely.

And my son-in-law really hated me going into the garden. He'd say, "You cat, where do you get in from?" and block my path with planks or put up spikes.

In that mansion, a long-awaited baby boy was born. As the baby boy grew, whenever he saw me, his eyes would light up with joy and he'd exclaim, "Ah! Meow meow!" He must have noticed how cute my round body and fur were. Without telling his future husband, they properly welcomed me into their home and started feeding me. I was so happy to have another beloved family member.

But then, one extremely dark morning at the end of winter...

    Wobble wobble wobble!!

Suddenly, there was a loud cracking sound from deep within the ground, and the world shook violently. I was so startled that I jumped out of bed with my eyes wide open. While the new buildings around us were collapsing one after another, our house remained still, enduring the shaking and holding firm as if to deflect the force of the earthquake. Our house didn't fall down and managed to protect everyone.

But the loud noise and shaking were so intense that I completely panicked and ran outside in a panic. I didn't know where I ran or how I got there, and I was lost for a while.

    "Now... Where's home? Where's everyone?"

A few days later, I barely made it back to my beloved mansion. The young master and his mother (the kind teacher's daughter) hugged me when they saw me, saying, "Thank goodness, you're alive!"

Then another harsh winter day arrived. I, too, had survived that earthquake and had become quite an old cat. Perhaps the tiny blood vessels inside my body had weakened. One cold morning, the moment the front door opened, I instinctively leaped out into the cold air.

At that moment, an intense pain shot through my body, as if something had snapped inside.

    "Meow, meow!"

I was in so much pain that I thrashed about on the soil in the garden, over and over again. Everyone was surprised and picked me up, and took me to the big white doctor's house (hospital), but my vision was getting blurry...

I fell asleep peacefully, listening to the crying of the little boy and his mother.

After I left on my journey, my mother, who loved me with all her heart, also quietly closed her eyes and fell asleep, as if following in my footsteps.

Our home did a great job of protecting my family's lives from that massive earthquake. My life will rest here for now, but I'm sure the memories and bloodline of this house will be gently passed on to the next generation of cats.
