    Chapter 1: The Beginning

"Phew, that was a good nap. The moss at the imperial tomb is incredibly fluffy when the sun hits it."

I stretched out as far as I could under the big camphor tree. Humans call this place a 'restricted area' and watch it from afar, but to me, it's just a vast bed.

But you know, there's a place I like even more than the moss, something that feels even better.

It's the big mansion right in front of the tomb. They say a carpenter built it by joining wood together without using a single nail. The pillars don't budge even when I sharpen my claws on them, and the floors are smooth and always smell like sunshine.

Besides, this house hardly has any walls to divide the rooms. When you open the shoji screens and sliding doors, a pleasant breeze flows through like a single path, from the greenery in the garden all the way to the parlor. It feels like the house is breathing freely, and I love it so much. That's why I can't help but sneak in.

"Hey! You're tracking mud in again! Don't you dare dirty the teacher's beautiful house!"

Every time I'm caught, the old woman in the apron comes flying at me, waving a duster. She chases me away with a 'Shoo! Shoo!', and I scramble out to the garden in a panic. What a stingy old woman. It's so big, what's the harm in one cat lounging around?

But you see, the mistress of this mansion was different.

She was a teacher at the most prestigious school in town, always wearing her kimono perfectly, her hair neatly tied. They say the townspeople respected her deeply as a 'distinguished teacher.'

However, when she came home from school in the evening and sat at her desk, her expression would soften.

One evening, as I was curled up in the corner of the garden looking bored after being chased out by the old woman, quiet footsteps approached. I looked up to see her crouching down, gently holding her kimono sleeves as she stared at me.

"You always come from the imperial tomb, don't you?"

Her voice was beautiful, like the ringing of a bell. In her hand, she held a small piece of flaked grilled fish. I sniffed it, and making sure the old woman wasn't watching, I gobbled it up in one go. It was delicious! Much better than the lizards at the tomb.

"Good kitty. Do you like this house?"

She gently scratched behind my ears with her slender, white fingers. It felt so good that I couldn't help but purr, 'Meow...'

Her room is truly wonderful. The parlor where she drinks tea during the day becomes the place where she writes with her fountain pen at night, and then it turns into her bedroom where she lays out her futon. 'If you have a single tatami mat, that becomes an infinite universe,' she used to say with a smile.

One day, a massive evening thunderstorm rolled in. I was soaked to the bone, shivering under the eaves of the veranda. Then, the shoji screen slid open with a rattle. It wasn't the scary old woman who appeared... it was her.

"Oh my, you're so wet. Old woman, please lend me a large towel."

She gently picked me up and wrapped me in a soft hand towel. The old nursemaid came rushing from the back, crying out, 'My lady, not such a stray cat!', but she just smiled—dignified, yet with a hint of mischief—and said this.

'No, nursemaid. This child is a gift entrusted to us by the gods of the imperial tomb. From today, let us make him part of our family.'

The nursemaid’s eyes went wide, and then she sighed in resignation, saying, 'If that is what you wish, my lady...'

And so, I went from being a stray cat at the imperial tomb to being a member of this beautiful home. Surrounded by the scent of real wood and the warmth of her gentle hands, my new life began. In the corner of the garden, a small rose seedling she had just planted was spreading its lush green leaves, bathed in the rain.
