第二話　おもてなし

「ふぁ～、よく寝た。お座敷の畳って、お昼寝するのに本当にきもちいいね」

ボクはピカピカの畳の上で、おもいっきり背伸びをした。

このお家ね、ボクたちがまいにちゴロゴロ過ごす場所と、お客さんを迎える「おもてなし」の場所が、ちゃんとお行儀よく分かれているんだ。 お客さんのお部屋は、ハイカラな椅子がある洋間（ようま）と、この広いお座敷。

お座敷には、ボクの大好きな長ーい縁側（えんがわ）があって、そこからお庭がぜんぶ見える。 そのお庭の一番いい場所に、彼女の宝物があるんだ。 海を渡ってやってきた、すごーく珍しい「バラ」の木。いつもあまくて、いい匂いがするの。

ある日の午後、玄関の鈴がチリンチリンって鳴った。

やってきたのは、お髭の立派な男の人。 彼女はお座敷にその人を通した。座るなり、男の人はお庭を見て「おや！」って声を大きくしたんだ。

「先生、これは見事なバラですな！ めったに見られない珍しいものだ」

「ええ、私の大切な宝物なのです」

ふだんはキリッとした彼女だけど、バラの話になると、目がきらきらして声が弾む。ボクもなんだか嬉しくなっちゃうな。

二人が楽しそうにお話ししているのを聞きながら、ボクはといえば――。

「ふふん、ボクはここだよ」

そのバラの木の足元、ひんやりした土の上に、まあるくなって座っていたんだ。 バラの葉っぱがちょうどいい日よけになって、ここが一番きもちいい。

「先生、あそこにかわいい先客がいますよ」

男の人がボクを見つけて、優しく笑った。 彼女も縁側からボクを見て、うふふって笑う。

「あの子は我が家の一員で、あのバラの『見張り番』なんですよ」

ボクはちょっと得意になって「なうん」って鳴いてみせた。 あまい匂いと、二人の優しいおしゃべり。ボクはまた、ウトウトと夢の中へ。

第三話　せんそう

Episode 2: Hospitality

"Ahhh, I slept so well. The tatami mats in the tatami room are really comfortable for taking a nap."

I stretched as far as I could on the sparkling clean tatami mat.

In this house, the area where we spend our days lounging around and the area where we entertain guests are neatly separated. The guest rooms include a Western-style room with stylish chairs and this spacious tatami room.

In the tatami room, there's a long veranda, my favorite, from which you can see the entire garden. And in the best spot in that garden is her treasure: a very rare rose bush that came all the way across the sea. It always smells sweet and lovely.

One afternoon, the bell at the front door rang.

The man who arrived had a magnificent beard. She led him into the room. As soon as he sat down, the man looked at the garden and exclaimed loudly, "Oh!"

"Teacher, this is a magnificent rose! It's a rare sight."

"Yes, it's my most precious treasure."

She's usually so composed, but when she talks about roses, her eyes light up and her voice becomes cheerful. It makes me happy too.

As I listened to the two of them chatting happily, I was thinking to myself...

"Heh heh, I'm right here."

I was curled up and sitting on the cool soil at the foot of the rose bush. The rose leaves provided just the right amount of shade, making it the most comfortable spot.

"Teacher, there's a cute visitor over there."

The man spotted me and smiled gently. She also looked at me from the veranda and giggled.

"That child is a member of our family, and she's the 'guardian' of those roses."

I felt a little proud and let out a "meow." The sweet scent and their gentle chatter... I drifted off to sleep again.
