    Chapter 3: War

“Phew, that was a good nap. It’s cool and quiet in the deep forest of the imperial tomb, even in the middle of the day.”

I stretched out small between the thick roots of a camphor tree. Lately, things around the house had been constantly noisy. Humans were running around with tense faces, and sometimes I could hear unpleasant sounds from the sky that vibrated in my belly.

One day, my favorite girl came into the garden holding the hand of a small child. Her eyes weren't their usual gentle, sparkling selves; they were wet and looked sadder than I had ever seen.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry... I will, I will definitely come back.”

She hugged me tight, and her tears fell one by one onto my fur. Then, she gently set me down on the ground, picked up a large bag, and went off somewhere with the little girl. I was left to watch the house.

After that, the city became an even more terrifying place. The hungry cats of the city were being caught by humans one after another and taken away. I heard the humans talking in scary voices, saying, “We’ll use them for army gloves.”

“It’s dangerous, you can’t stay here!”

My cat instincts sounded a sharp alarm. I hurriedly squeezed through the fence of the imperial tomb right in front of the house. I hid myself deep in the dense forest among the large trees, where humans could never enter. The old gods of the tomb were very kind. They spread out the leaves of the great camphor tree to hide me in a circle and protect me from the eyes of the humans.

One night, there was a tremendous sound, and the sky burned bright red. The nearby station, where I used to listen to the sound of the trains, was completely burned down in an instant by fire falling from the sky.

I was terrified and buried my face in the roots of the camphor tree, trembling. But strangely, no fire fell into this forest where the gods slept. When I looked toward the house, those sturdy, traditionally built pillars and the mansion were still standing, somehow holding on despite being wrapped in smoke.

    And so, I survived.

My stomach is empty, and the rose bush that used to smell so sweet has lost all its vitality, but I am still waiting in front of that veranda.

    “Meow.”

In the quiet garden, I let out a small cry. Believing in the day when she will call me a “good kitty” in that beautiful voice again and scratch behind my ears, I am curled up here today, waiting for her.
