(Relational Shock)

    • English Definition:
Relational Shock refers to the structural and interactional disruption that occurs within a couple’s relationship during the postpartum period. It is triggered primarily by the mother’s physiological, psychological, and social changes following childbirth, which necessitate a systemic renegotiation of roles, expectations, and emotional attunement within the partnership. Failure to co-adjust to this shift can increase the risk of postpartum crises, including marital dissatisfaction, emotional disconnection, or separation.

(Partnership Shock)

    • English Definition:
Partnership Shock is a general-audience term that describes the emotional and relational disruption experienced by couples after childbirth. It reflects the sudden sense of disconnect or misalignment caused by shifting roles, responsibilities, and expectations in the early parenting phase. Unlike individual pathology, this shock is defined as a relational phenomenon that affects the shared dynamics between partners.

(Postpartum Shift Theory, PST)

    • English Definition:
Postpartum Shift Theory (PST) is a framework designed to support couples in adapting to the relational transformations (Relational Shock) that occur during the postpartum period. It conceptualizes the postpartum phase as a multidimensional adjustment process that involves physical recovery, emotional attunement, social role renegotiation, and the rebuilding of mutual trust. PST proposes a multi-layered model of preventive and responsive strategies to facilitate relational resilience after childbirth.

(Relational Update in the Postpartum Shift)

    • English Definition:
Relational Update refers to the adaptive process by which couples reorganize and redefine their relationship in response to post-childbirth changes in roles, emotions, behaviors, and time perception. Within the Postpartum Shift Theory (PST), this process is conceptualized as an essential transition from a pre-parenthood dynamic (e.g., romantic partners or co-working adults) to a co-parenting team. Relational shock serves as the initiating point of this transformation, and the quality of adjustment determines the capacity to co-create a resilient, trust-based partnership.

(Postpartum Crisis)

    • English Definition:
Postpartum Crisis refers to a state of significant relational distress occurring between partners following childbirth, triggered by abrupt changes in living conditions, physical recovery, and social roles. It typically arises when the couple fails to effectively adjust to the relational shock induced by the postpartum transition. This crisis may manifest as emotional disconnection, decreased relationship satisfaction, domestic conflict, or in severe cases, separation or divorce.

(Postpartum Vulnerability)

    • English Definition:
Postpartum Vulnerability refers to the heightened susceptibility to physical, psychological, and social stressors commonly experienced by mothers during the postpartum period. Contributing factors include hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, social isolation, and intense caregiving demands, which together increase emotional reactivity and relational strain.

(Relational Adjustment)

    • English Definition:
Relational Adjustment refers to the couple’s collaborative process of adapting to postpartum-induced relational shifts. It involves reorganizing roles, navigating emotional changes, and rebuilding shared routines. Key factors include mutual understanding, empathy, open communication, and flexible negotiation.

(Emotional Translation)

    • English Definition:
Emotional Translation is a relational skill and support method for interpreting postpartum emotional expressions—such as anger, silence, or disconnection—as signals of unmet needs or structural imbalance. Within PST, it is regarded as a core dialogical practice to transform raw affect into relational understanding.

    9. Relational Shift Map(6領域×5段階モデル(The 6-Domain × 5-Level Model))

    • English Definition:
The Relational Shift Map (The 6-Domain × 5-Level Model) is a framework within PST for mapping and assessing relational dynamics. It tracks changes across six domains—emotion, behavior, cognition, relationship, roles, and meaning—through five stages: unawareness, tension, stress, rupture, and reconstruction, offering a guide for intervention and reflection.

(Trust Credit)

    • English Definition:
Trust Credit refers to the accumulation of micro-behaviors, shared empathy, and mutual presence that build psychological capital within a relationship. In PST, it is conceptualized as a resilience reserve that buffers against conflict and supports recovery during the postpartum adjustment period.

(Home as a New Workplace)

    • English Definition:
Home as a New Workplace is a metaphor that redefines the household during the postpartum period—not as a restorative space, but as a dynamic and emotionally demanding worksite with unclear roles and invisible evaluation systems. PST uses this lens to explain paternal disorientation and promote adaptive role engagement.

(Translational Supporter)

    • English Definition:
A Translational Supporter is a practitioner who mediates postpartum relational misunderstandings through interpretive and dialogical support. This role—often played by midwives, public health nurses, or fatherhood educators—requires translating structural tension and emotional signals into shared understanding. In PST, their capacity for emotional-linguistic transformation is a core intervention skill.
