On May 21st in London, Thom Yorke received the Ivor Novell Award, one of the UK's most prestigious awards for songwriters. In his acceptance speech, presented by Harry Styles, he criticized the music industry and streaming services, arguing that young talent will not be nurtured if things continue as they are, and sharply criticizing the current state of the music industry by saying, "Without us, you guys are worthless."

第71回アイヴァー・ノヴェロ賞でアカデミー・フェローシップ賞を受賞したヨークは、その後、BBC 6 Musicの取材に応じて、次のように語っています。
「これまで多くのことを成し遂げてきた人たちが、まるで金庫に眠っているピカソの絵画のように、今度は古い音楽カタログを価値ある資産として投機の対象にしているというのは、実に興味深いことだと思う。でも、かつてのような再分配を少しでもしない限り、自分たちの経済モデルそのものが、いずれ立ち行かなくなるってことに気づいていないんだよ。
それほど大した額じゃなくても、自分が心から応援したいアーティストを支援し、彼らの初期の成長を見守ることができる。少しのサポートがあるだけでも、人は成長し、自分の道を見つけていける。結局のところ、人は失敗を通してしか学べない。今どきは一度でも失敗したら終わりって感じだけどね」
"There are people who have been doing a lot of things for a long time, and I think it's only now that they're turning old music catalogs into valuable assets for speculation, like Picasso paintings sleeping in a safe. But they don't realize that unless they do some reallocation like they used to, their economic model itself will eventually disappear.
Even if it's not a fixed amount, you can support artists you genuinely want to support and watch them grow in their early stages. Even a little support can help people grow and find their own path."
ヨークはニルヴァーナ（Nirvana）を例に挙げ、新しいアーティストにチャンスを与えることで、音楽業界はかつてニルヴァーナの大ブレイクが多くの人に与えたような興奮を、ファンに再び提供できると付け加えています。
「現実の世界では、数年に一度くらいは“うわ、すごい！”って思わせるアーティストが現れる必要がある。例えば、初めて『Nevermind』を聴いた時、僕は“よし、始まったな”って感じだった。たまにそういう瞬間ある。僕が言いたいのは、まさにそういうことなんだよ」
Yorke cited Nirvana as an example, adding that by giving new artists a chance, the music industry can once again provide fans with the same kind of excitement that Nirvana's breakthrough brought to so many people.
"In the real world, you need an artist to come along every few years that makes you go, 'Wow, that's amazing!' For example, when I first heard 'Nevermind,' I was like, 'Okay, this is it.' You get those moments sometimes. That's what I'm trying to say."
