May 23, 2026 (Saturday)
(Fellowship)
Thom Yorke received the Ivars Academy Fellowship at the 71st Ivar Novello Awards, which recognizes the excellence, cultural impact, and lasting importance of musical and film scores.
Thom Yorke took the stage at Grosvenor House in London, introduced by Harry Styles. In his introductory speech, Harry Styles described Thom Yorke as "at the top of a magical mountain of music that we all, including myself, are climbing," adding, "I finally understood it with 'Talk Show Host.' I got lost in the intro to 'Talk Show Host.'"
Later in the awards ceremony, Thom Yorke performed a new solo track, 'Space Walk,' featuring piano, and an acoustic version of 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' from Radiohead's album 'In Rainbows.'
Guitarist Ed O'Brien, who released his solo album on May 22nd, recently mentioned that Thom Yorke is also planning to release a solo album later this year.
Prior to his fellowship acceptance speech, Thom Yorke initially thought the award was "probably a mistake."
And, having presented the award to numerous collaborators over the years, Thom Yorke has stated that he is "not a solo artist."
These collaborators include Tom Skinner, drummer for The Smile; longtime producer Nigel Godrich; guitarist Jonny Greenwood; and artist Stanley Donwood.
"The people I work with, and the creative relationships we have, are incredibly precious to me, and at the same time, very delicate. They are moving forward with the best possible outlook."
"The people I work with, the creative relationships I have with them, are incredibly precious to me, and at the same time, incredibly delicate. They are moving forward with the greatest possible vision."
Thom Yorke also presented the award to his wife and children, reading a pre-prepared speech. In his speech, Thom Yorke criticized those at the top of the music industry, including major labels and streaming services.
The full text of the speech is as follows:
"I believe that every generation has a God-given right to rebel, to defy the industry, and to prove them wrong. It's about telling stories through music and songs, aging with your own values, and continuing to show that it truly means pursuing your own style wherever you are. Because it's possible. That's why music lives on through generations."
For that to happen, the industry itself needs to trust a certain number of people.
"I, and the band, are acutely aware of how fortunate we were to have had a period of growth thanks to our managers, Brian, Chris, Bryce, and Jules. They fought for us. And, strangely enough, the old record company, the long-established EMI, was quite lenient. All of that has paid off."
