Q1. The politician’s explanation is just tergiversation aimed at evading responsibility for the scandal.

(1)malediction [mæ̀lidíkʃən]
「under a malediction:呪いにかかっている」

(2)tergiversation [tə̀rdʒivərséɪʃən]

(3)nimbus [nímbəs]

「Der Nimbus der Unbesiegbarkeit:

(4)severance [sévərəns]
「severance of diplomatic relations:国交断絶」

最初は「The politician’s explanation is just a tergiversation; he intentionally used ambiguous words, evading his responsibility.」

後日、初稿時に完成していた問題文「The politician’s explanation is just tergiversation; his ambiguous statement is to evade responsibility for the scandal.」

そこで、「; his ambiguous statement is to evade」を「aimed at evading」としました。

この「The politician’s explanation is just tergiversation aimed at evading responsibility for the scandal.」
