日本昔話×英語【かぐや姫】レベル1(初級!)

    はじめに

    🌱 今回から新たに「かぐや姫」のやさしい英語翻訳版をお届けします。

    このシリーズは、英語が苦手な学生さんや、学び直し中の社会人の方が「楽しく、ストーリーで英語に慣れる」ことを目的としています。 手軽に読み進められるよう、なるべくわかりやすい表現と簡単な単語を使って翻訳しました。単語リストや文法の補足、理解度テストも付属しています。

    まずは第1章を気楽に読んでみてください😊


    📘 Chapter 1

    Once upon a time, an old man and an old woman lived in a small village. The old man cut bamboo in the mountains. The people called him “the bamboo cutter.”

    One day, the old man found a bamboo glowing with bright light. “It is not a normal bamboo,” he said. He cut it open.

    Inside the bamboo, he found a tiny, beautiful girl. She was small like a doll.

    The old man took her home. The old woman was very happy.

    They named the girl Kaguya-hime. They loved her like their own child.

    🌱 文法のちょこっと補足(Chapter 1)

    ✨ “used to” を使わない過去表現

    The old man cut bamboo in the mountains.→「いつも山で竹を切っていた」というニュアンスでも、「cut」でOK。文脈で自然に伝わります。

    ✨ “They named the girl Kaguya-hime.”

    → 「name A B」で「AをBと名付ける」という形です。

    📘 Chapter 2

    Kaguya-hime grew up very fast. She became a beautiful young woman.

    People in the town heard about her beauty. Many noble men came to see her.

    Five rich and powerful men wanted to marry her. But Kaguya-hime said: “If you bring me a special gift, I will marry you.”

    Each man got a hard and strange mission:

    • A stone bowl from Buddha

    • A branch with gold from Mount Hourai

    • A robe made from fire-rat fur

    • A jewel from a dragon’s neck

    • A shell from a swallow’s nest

    The men looked for the gifts, but no one could find the real one. So, Kaguya-hime did not marry anyone.


    📘 Chapter 3

    One night, Kaguya-hime looked at the moon. She looked very sad. She cried and said to the old man and woman:

    “I am from the Moon. My real family will come for me soon.”

    The old man and old woman were very sad. They wanted to stop her from leaving.

    Even the emperor in the capital heard the news. He sent many soldiers to protect her.


    📘 Chapter 4

    On the night of the full moon, people from the Moon came down. They were bright like stars.

    The soldiers tried to stop them, but they could not move.

    Kaguya-hime said goodbye. She cried and bowed deeply.

    “Thank you for your love. I will never forget you.”

    Then she went back to the Moon.


    📘 Chapter 5

    Kaguya-hime left a letter and a gift. It was a letter for the emperor, and a drink to live forever.

    But the emperor was too sad. He did not want to live long without her.

    He burned the gift on the top of a tall mountain. The mountain was called Fuji.

    People say smoke still comes from it, even today.

    🌱 文法のちょこっと補足(Chapter 2~5)

    ✨ “grew up” の過去形表現

    Kaguya-hime grew up very fast. → 「grow up(成長する)」の過去形は「grew up」

    ✨ “could not move”

    → 「動けなかった」。can の過去形否定は “could not” です。

    ✨ “He did not want to live long without her.”

    → want to ~ の否定形は “did not want to ~” になります。

    📘日本語訳(ほぼ直訳)

    Chapter 1:
    むかしむかし、小さな村に、
    おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。
    おじいさんは山で竹を切って暮らしていました。
    人々はおじいさんのことを「竹取り」と呼んでいました。
    ある日、おじいさんは山で、光る竹を見つけました。
    「これは普通の竹じゃないぞ」と言って、竹を切ってみました。
    すると中から、小さくてきれいな女の子が出てきました。
    その子はお人形のように小さかったのです。
    おじいさんはその子を家に連れて帰りました。
    おばあさんもとても喜びました。
    ふたりはその子に「かぐや姫」と名づけ、
    自分たちの子どものように育てました。

    🌱 Chapter 2: 
    かぐや姫は、とても早く大きくなりました。
    すぐに美しい女の子になりました。
    その美しさは町に広がり、
    たくさんの貴族が彼女に会いに来ました。
    5人のえらい男たちは、かぐや姫と結婚したいと思いました。
    でも、かぐや姫は言いました。
    「特別な物を持ってきてくれたら、結婚しましょう。」
    男たちには、とてもむずかしい問題が出されました。
    ・仏さまの石の茶わん
    ・ほうらい山の金の木のえだ
    ・火ねずみのけがわ
    ・りゅうのくびの宝石
    ・つばめのすの中の貝
    男たちはその物をさがしに出かけましたが、
    だれも本物を持ってくることができませんでした。
    だから、かぐや姫はだれともけっこんしませんでした。

    🌱 Chapter 3: 
    ある夜、かぐや姫は月を見ていました。
    とても悲しそうな顔をしていました。
    彼女は泣きながら、おじいさんとおばあさんに言いました。
    「私は月の国の人です。もうすぐ、本当の家族が私をむかえに来ます。」
    おじいさんとおばあさんはとても悲しみました。
    そして、かぐや姫を引きとめようとしました。
    都の天皇もこの話を聞きました。
    たくさんの兵士を送り、かぐや姫を守るように言いました。

    🌱 Chapter 4:
    まんげつの夜、月の国の人たちがやって来ました。
    光に包まれて、空からおりてきました。
    兵士たちはかぐや姫を守ろうとしましたが、
    ふしぎな力で動けなくなってしまいました。
    かぐや姫は涙を流し、深くおじぎをしました。
    「育ててくれてありがとうございました。
    おふたりのことは、けっして忘れません。」
    そう言って、かぐや姫は月の国へ帰っていきました。

    🌱 Chapter 5: 
    かぐや姫は、天皇への手紙と、
    不老不死のくすりを残していきました。
    でも天皇は、かぐや姫がいなくなって、
    生きる気力をなくしてしまいました。
    そして、日本で一番高い山の上で、
    そのくすりを焼かせました。
    今でもその山からけむりが出ているそうです。
    その山は「ふじ(不死)の山」とよばれるようになりました。
