ð [Short Story] "Keeping a Snail"
In English
ãã¿ããããŠããŒã®ããŒãž

I entrusted a wish I told no one to a snail.
I decided to keep a snail.
When I told a girl I knew that I couldn't keep the cat I wanted because I lived in an apartment, she told me that snails have personality and are cute.
Some are timid. Some won't leave once you put them on an eggshell. Some love cucumbers. Apparently, they are all different.
When I heard that, I thought, 'Oh, that might be nice.'
The cost of food is almost nothing since they can eat vegetable scraps.
I became interested because I heard they live for four or five years, so that same day, I received two snails from that girl.
Apparently, snails can be both male and female. So, if you keep two, they will even lay eggs.
I decided to go to a 100-yen shop to buy a cage for keeping them and an atomizer (a small spray bottle) to use as a mister.
I planned to go the next day at the 10:00 AM opening time.
After I finished eating and was lazing around watching YouTube, the time had come.
Suppressing a bit of laziness, I realized that if I didn't have a mister, these little ones would die, so I just got up and went out.
They sold insect cages in the pet supplies section.
There were several types with different sizes and lid colors, ranging from 300 yen to 100 yen.
I was thinking of buying a small cage. So, I picked up the 100-yen one.
The lid was transparent and mesh-like.
I had been told that it was good to stretch a kitchen drain net over the case to keep insects out, so I thought mesh would be fine.
The other cages had colored lids, so I felt they were somehow hard to see through, and I thought I would go with the mesh material one.
I tried opening the window on the lid. It opened surprisingly easily.
I thought I would spray water from the window using the atomizer.
'There, there.'
I muttered in my heart.
I thought about choosing the one that opened and closed the most smoothly, but when I thought about it, I was going to stretch a net between the lid and the case, so the window didn't matter.
'I see, so it's more important that the case lid opens easily, then.'
I tried to open the lid.
It wouldn't open.
I tried to open it again, but it was stiff and wouldn't budge. Looking at the part that was stuck to see how to open it, I saw a latch.
'Ah, I just need to press this while opening it.'
That's what I thought.
However, my nails break easily. Just by using my nail to scrape off a bottle label, my nail would peel off in layers. I didn't want that to happen again, so I reached into my bag to look for something to use as a cushion.
I realized something.
It was a pocket tissue pack from a buy-back shop that they were handing out at the station. For a moment, an indescribable emotion crossed my mind.
That man had hay fever. He was always blowing his nose.
At first, he used soft pocket tissues, but he didn't like them. He preferred the ones handed out on the street, saying that the slightly stiffer ones were more durable and better.
I didn't have any particular interest in that, but ever since then, whenever I see people handing out pocket tissues on the street, I find myself going to get one instead of refusing.
I still haven't broken that habit. Even though that man is no longer here, I still go to get pocket tissues.
Seeing the tissue that came out of my bag, a bitter smile escaped me.
I opened the seal and took out a tissue. I placed it over the latch on the lid and gently pressed it to open it.
The lid opened easily. It was almost as if I didn't even need the tissue. That feeling of being let down made me feel embarrassed for a moment.
After returning home, I opened the lid and put in some eggshells and carrot scraps.
When I put the smaller snail into the box, it moved onto the eggshells in the few minutes I took my eyes off it. It moves surprisingly fast.
The other one, too, climbed the wall and pressed its head against the net, moving so quickly I wondered how it could be so fast. What that girl said might not have been a lie after all. Feeling amused, I sat down in front of the kotatsu and peered into the cage from the side.
I find myself wishing that one of these two would turn out to be female and lay eggs. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see tiny, newly hatched snails?
Children I have yet to see.
I can no longer bear children myself.
I entrust my wish to the snails.
Please, won't you show me your small, adorable children?
And wouldn't you let me dote on them to my heart's content?
I placed the insect cage on my desk, in the spot that gets the least sunlight but is the most visible.
