Our Name Starts With Shellfish — Not Lobster
Hi, I'm Hiroshi — owner of Kaiebi, a 6-seat seafood counter in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.
Most people who book a seat here are coming for one thing: live lobster, steamed in a Staub pot with white wine and herbs and brought to the table still in the pot. I love that dish — it's why most of you found us in the first place.
But here's something I don't think many people notice: our English name isn't "Lobster, Shrimp & Crab." It's "Shellfish, Shrimp & Crab." Shellfish comes first — and that's on purpose, even if I've never explained why until now.
Clams, mussels, oysters, scallops — every time you visit
We keep a standing shellfish menu here, not a rotating "today's catch." Five dishes show up again and again:
Clams steamed in sake
Mussels, Naples-style, with black pepper
Oysters on the half shell
Scallop sashimi
Fried oysters
Shellfish sneaks into other dishes too — a pasta, a garlicky ajillo-style plate, a seafood marinade salad, even the potato salad.
You can come here without ordering the lobster
I take just as much care with a plate of clams as I do with the lobster. Nothing that leaves this counter is an afterthought — I check every dish myself before it reaches you. So if lobster isn't what you're craving that night, that's completely fine. Build your evening around shellfish and a glass of something from our roughly 30 wines by the glass instead.
If you have a shellfish allergy, please tell us in advance — we'll substitute where we can, though some dishes can't be changed once cooking is underway.
"Through dining out, make life a little richer." That's the idea behind everything we serve here — lobster or not.
Thank you for reading to the end!
