HEMP EXPO & Forum
• ASA Japan

— Generative AI as a Reasonable Accommodation
My year with AI was not a story of "starting a creative endeavor."
It was a year where my way of life genuinely changed.
The initial trigger was "Tears for Artists."
The starting point was an online compilation I saw titled, "Tears for Artists" (Eshi Namida-me).
Honestly, at that point, I had no deep philosophy or sense of issue.
"Hmm, so AI-generated art has progressed that far?"
"Well, I guess I'll just try it out."
That was all.
I am not an artist, nor was I interested in becoming skilled.
I just wanted to use my own experience to see what would actually happen if I interacted with it.
I Knew the Moment I Touched It
"This will be a reasonable accommodation."
I am a person with a disability.
Even if I have images or ideas in my head, it is not easy to express them externally through my hands or words.
The moment I fed words into the generative AI and the first image appeared, I knew clearly.
This is not a technology that "draws in my stead."
It is a circuit that visualizes my inner world exactly as it is.
It wasn't about being skillful or unskillful.
It wasn't a matter of evaluation.
It was functioning as a reasonable accommodation.
At this point, AI ceased to be a "convenient tool" for me.
I Posted Imperfect Art on Facebook Daily
I posted the generated images on Facebook every day without worrying about their completeness.
Looking back now, I think the early pictures were crude and immature.
But I kept posting them.
Because they were the direct external output of my bodily sensations and sense of incongruity.
As a result, the posts repeatedly received NSFW (\ge 18) judgments, leading to what is known as repeated "Red Bans" (post restrictions).
Here, I was confronted with the reality that the issue was not the AI, but "Whose ethics are stopping this expression?"
Changing the Context
Picture Book Columbus LA Flower Postcard Exhibition
If I was being stopped on SNS, I thought I would try placing the work in a different context.
The exhibition I applied to was the LA Flower Postcard Exhibition, hosted by Picture Book Columbus. The entry fee was 7,000 yen.
The judging criteria were not based on "artistic skill" but on whether the work contained an ethical view or a question.
Honestly, I submitted it thinking it wouldn't pass.
However, the work was selected.
The same expression is regulated in one place and appreciated in another.
That difference clearly demonstrated the relativity of culture and ethics.
Connection to International Events
HEMP EXPO & Forum
This progression led to the Asia International HEMP EXPO & Forum (held in Thailand).
In this, Asia's largest international Hemp-related event, where policy, industry, culture, and art intersect, my AI art was used as the background visual for the large LED screen installed behind the fashion show stage.
It was the moment when a personal experiment became part of the staging of an international forum.
Becoming a Documented Culture
Subsequently, my practice revolving around AI, the body, expression, and reasonable accommodation reached the point of being recorded:
• Names No Nai Shinbun (The Newspaper Without a Name)
• AI art and my activities were featured on one full page in this Japanese counter-culture medium, which has been running for over 50 years.
• ASA Japan Inaugural Issue
• I contributed 4 pages to this culture magazine focusing on Hemp/Cannabis culture.
The fact that this was preserved in print media, rather than just being an SNS trend, holds great significance for me.
AI Was Not a "Creative Tool"
Reflecting on this past year, I realize that for me, AI was neither a creative tool nor a trending technology.
It was a circuit that transforms what I couldn't do into a form that I can.
It functioned in reality as a reasonable accommodation for a person with a disability.
In Retrospect
AI did not think in my place, nor did it erase me.
Rather, it created a pathway to connect what had previously been confined within me to society.
This post is a record of that year and an example of how generative AI actually functioned as a reasonable accommodation.
