I've definitely dropped the ball of late. Of the two communities that I moderate (this one and north_bay), both have become inactive in every sense of the word. I'm endeavouring to fix both, one at at time. I've started with the North Bay community, because it is my hometown, and because the fixes there are easy enough to do.

north_bay is becoming a news portal, current events calendar, and public forum for various municipal, political, and environmental issues. There are a number of articles currently on the community that many people could relate to, not just North Bay citizens (or formal citizens). For example, an article about outgoing Nipissing University president Dr. Dennis Mock is up for everyone to read.

Anyway, for those of you in both communities, I just wanted to let you know that there are new entries up in north_bay to check out, and for those of you in this group that are interested in North Bay, have lived or plan to live in the city, you should consider checking it out.

At the same time, if anyone here has any suggestions on how to make this community a bit more lively again, feel free to drop a comment on this entry.

We've found some rather interesting documents.

There is an elementary school certificate as well as a high School certificate in my possession dated:

1927 and 1928 in Sault Ste Marie

For one Margaret Dunn.

It found by Ralph Toddy, an antique dealer, and came into the possession of my Uncle, Ray Dunn, and now to me.

If you are related to this Margaret Dunn, we'd love to hear from you!

Please comment with any information you may have, and perhaps we can pass the document onto her relatives.

Hi there everyone. I'm new and thought I would introduce myself before asking a question. I actually live in Toronto, but my husband was born in Elliot Lake and lived in Blind River for most of his childhood. Most of his family still lives there and we are planning on moving up there soon.

So my question, I was wondering if anyone had any online sources for looking for apartments and jobs up there. We are asking my husbands family, but I would like to look at some places for myself as well.

TIA!!

Well.. I moved in today.
What sort of things are there to do in the Parry Sound area and surrounding areas?
I love the outdoors and my passions are music and architecture.
Any suggestions for hiking or biking trails?

Hello there!

This may be a stab in the dark, but I have a quick question for everyone. I'm living in Sault Ste. Marie and would like to bring my horse up here from Blind River. Does anyone know of any barns in the area that aren't going to charge me $350 a month?

Thanks :)

Hi.
I have just got a job in Parry Sound and was wondering if anyone here is from there.

I know nothing about the city but am curious.

I noticed an earlier post about musical acts.. but the suggestions given seemed to revolve around Sudbury.
Is there anything in the Parry Sound area?
I am a music fiend and may go insane if nothing exists.

Hi,

I am new to the area, and I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions of any concert venues in the area? Big ones and small. Any other suggestions about fun places to go would be nice too.

: )

Usually, every year my husband and I (and our scottie-dog) get to go up to Northwestern Ontario two or three times, sometimes staying for as long as a month (in 2002). I absolutely love it up there!!!!! We pitch our tent at a campground either near Atikokan or Sioux Lookout, usually Sioux Lookout, and fish every day. But this year, everything fell to pieces. My husband had trouble at his job, the job that allowed him the time off to go up there so often and for so long, and as a result we haven't been up there yet! As of now, it looks as though our only trip will be for a one week fly-in fishing trip out of the Atikokan area in mid August. I'm devastated, but I can't say too much to my husband as he will see it as a criticism and it isn't, what happened to him on his job certainly wasn't his fault.
But God I miss Sunset Country! Can anyone update me? Whats the news? Is the mill in Dryden closing down? How has fishing been on Lac Seul? Are there any forest fires burning?
Throw me a crumb, I just want to feel connected.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm thinking of moving to Northern Ontario in the future, so can you please give some info about life there (sceneries, social life, school/class sizes, population, transportation, etc)?

- Does it have a high Aboriginal population?
- In the rural areas, are the houses actually close to forest areas, lake, or river? Can you spot moose & deer easily/often?
- How is the transportation? Any public bus service?
- In the spring and summer, would it be easy to ride bikes there? Any bike trails?
- Any mall or shopping centre?
- How is the general social scene? (Quiet, peaceful, everyone knows each other)?

I've always lived in urban areas all my life, and I'd like to move into a rural place some day (weird I know, because most people do the oppsite). I love nature, but I'd also like to live in a place where there's easy access to school, grocery store, movie theatre, etc. Any ideas/suggestions?

Also, if you live in Northern Ontario or have any photos from that area, could you please post here or give me the link? Thanks in advance!

Subject:General Discussion Topic #2 - Crumbling Infastructure
Security:Public
Mood: exhausted

Taking Northern Ontario as the vast land between my neck of the woods (North Bay), west to Kenora, and north to Hudson Bay, we have a lot of infastructure here to maintain. Yet, roads are crumbling faster than we can fix them, culverts are collapsing, and bridges are being blocked off due to their age and safety concerns. Although the levels of government invest millions of dollars every year into Northern Ontario infastructure, it doesn't seem to be enough to keep things running.

In that light, today's discussion question is this: What is the worst road/area in your city/town? Are there really bad portions of the main highways (17 and 11) that need attention, or are there some secondary highways that you wouldn't drive on if your life depended on it? Is there an aging bridge in your area that now causes you to make a long detour? What do you think needs to be done to fix our roads and bridges?

Feel free to discuss any aspects of this. Sorry this isn't as exciting as pizza joints, but I'm sure there are some of you out there with good opinions on this matter.

Subject:General Discussion Topic #1 - Best Place to Get Some (Pizza) Pie
Security:Public
Mood: calm

So, as promised, here is a general discussion topic that will hopefully get some conversation started!

Where, in your opinion, is the best place to get a pizza from in the North? Is there a franchise near your hometown (or somewhere else in the North) that makes an exceptional pizza pie? Is there a Ma and Pa Shop in Northern Ontario that makes one fantastic pizza?

Go ahead and have fun with this! As an option, you can also feel free to state what's on your favourite pizza.

I don't know about everywhere else, but its another beautiful day in North Bay!

Subject:Hi Northern Ontario!

Mood: calm

I'm David Briggs, and I'm the new moderator/maintainer of this community! I want to say welcome to each and all of you!

First, I want to offer sincere thanks to stinkybum for first creating this community many years ago, and second for maintaining this community for all of those years since its inception. Way to go H!

So, how to get this community a bit more active? Well, I have some ideas...

To begin with, check the user info page for this community. The interests section has a lot of city and town names in the North, but not all of them. Do you see your town or a neighbouring town missing? Drop a comment on this entry and I'll add those to the list. Of course, this won't get people posting frantically on here, but I would like a nice complete list of cities and towns in the North. Thanks!

Secondly, I would like to try and generate discussion about our neck of the woods through a "general discussion post" once a week or so. One week could be to discuss issues that we all face here in Northern Ontario, like doctor shortages, rising energy prices, youth out-migration. Another week could be discussing the best place to picnic in the North, or best place to go for breakfast. Regardless of the topic, hopefully they'll be such that discussion will be a-plenty!

Thirdly, lend some suggestions! How can we make this an exciting community? Drop a line!

Let's go Northern Ontario!

Hi, I'm wondering how many Elliot Lake's there are in Ontario? I know of one, and I know I passed one during the summer but I'm not sure where it was (not anymore anyways) or if it was the same one that I know of (if that makes sense). I really need to know before the end of the week, so if anyone can help me out I'd really really appreciate it. Thanks a lot! :)

On Thursday, October 20th, sometime before second period, someone stole a red 2005 Norco Team DH downhill bike from the storage locker at St. Charles College. The door was broken down, and this bike was the only one stolen, among all the other bikes stored there.

This bike belongs to my brother. He had owned it only for a day before someone took it from him.

This is a very limited edition bike. You can't buy it in Sudbury, you need to have it shipped from elsewhere. My brother was the only kid in Sudbury to own this bike, so it should be pretty noticable if you pass it on the street.

We have a 500$ reward for information leading to the safe return of the bike. This is a no-questions-asked reward. It doesn't matter if you were the one that, on a moment of impulse, decided to take the bike. Bring it back to us and we will give you the reward, no questions asked. You don't even have to give us your name, and we won't ask. We just want the bike back.

Please look at the picture, and try to think if you've seen this bike around town somewhere. If you know who has it currently, tell them about the reward and ask them to please bring it back to its rightful owner.

Please pass this on to anyone you know in the Northern Ontario region. The more eyes we have looking, the better.

If you have *ANY* information about this bike, please email me - stolenbike@gmail.com Send it anonymously if you'd like, I don't care. Like I said, we just want the bike back.

Thank you all so much for your help.

Hey everyone!!

I'm a second year nursing student at Laurentian, looking to buy used books from someone. The ones that I need for this semester are:

- Maternity and Child Health Nursing, 4th ed. by Pillitteri (and the study guide that goes with it)
- Microbiology, 8th ed. by Tortora
- Microbiology Lab Manual, 8th ed. by Morello
- Calculate with Confidence, 3rd ed. by Gray Morris
- Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 5th ed. by Lehne
- Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide, by Karch.

If you have any of these and are willing to sell, please comment!

I have first year Nursing textbooks that I'm willing to sell as well, so if anybody is interested, let me know which books you are looking for and maybe I can help you out!!

Anybody want to split a Costco membership with me? I already have it, it'd be $25. It's good for a year, and Costco is awesome. (Glasses, Contact Lenses, Computers/computer extras/cameras/meat/food/whatever.)

Drop me a line at femme.automatique@gmail.com. It's Jessica. Any time in the next couple days, because I think I need you to come to Costco with me.

Oh, and Hi. I'm a first year Advertising student at Cambrian and I love it here.

Hi, I just found this group and joined so I wanted to introduce myself. I live near Cleveland, Ohio, but since I was little, I've spent three months every year living on a small island in Georgian Bay, six miles outside of Parry Sound. Parry Sound has always held a special place in my heart and I hope to move there completely someday. Being out on the island, I've never known that many people in town, but if any of you live or summer in the area, I'd love to chat with you.
