Translation to Simplified Chinese is disabled

[edit]

I want translate Global reminder bot/Messages/default-global but it say Translation to Simplified Chinese is disabled: Translate in zh please. Why? How to translate? Jingjinjij (talk) 15:21, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Jingjinjij: There's an automatic conversion system, so translations in different variants of Chinese are typically kept in one page. Take Translations:Main Page/8/zh for example; its source code (also known as wikitext) reads:
欢迎来到元维基——为维基媒体基金会-{zh-hans:项目;zh-hant:專案;}-及其相关-{zh-hans:项目;zh-hant:專案;}-进行从协调、文件化到企划及分析的全域社群网站。
When the converter is set to 繁體, is rendered as and so on. The -{zh-hans:项目;zh-hant:專案;}- syntax is for manual conversion.
You might find better help on the Chinese Wikipedia.

that one doesn't work BigKrow (talk) 20:53, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, Justin is correct. Meta is Facebook right? An AI Wikinews on Facebook is insanity to me. And having AI-generated content goes against everything the Wikimedia Foundation stands for I think. Lofi Gurl (talk) 20:17, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you want to propose Wikinews be resumed as a sister project, I think you've got a lot of work to do. If you want to make a totally separate project independent of the WMF, you won't be able to use the name "Wikinews", as that trademark is going to be protected. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:50, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wake-up call II: data strikes back

[edit]

Sunday evening is always slow, so I decided to publish a follow-up essay to my January one : User:Schiste/what-now-2-data-strikes-back

To sum it up, in January I shared I thought we'd lose half our traffic in 3 to 5 years. The good news is that I was wrong. The bad new is that it's going to be much faster.

On top of traffic data analysis, I also started analysing editorship trends as a theory I had in January is that editorship decline was lagging behind readership decline. Well you've guessed it, editorship is declining and decline is getting worse every month.

It's a bit long, so I wrote a tl;dr. Unlike in January I added ideas/options/opinions.

Feel free to engage in the essay talk page. schiste (talk) 16:27, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

russian Wikipedia in gross violation of Wikimedia principles

[edit]

As we all know, Wikipedia is "the free online encyclopedia, that anyone can edit". So why are the editors in the russian Wikipedia allowed to turn their local project into a Z-pedia? Currently, potraying a map of Ukraine in one's userpage would lead to a block [1] [2]. It bothers them a lot to see Crimea characterized as Ukrainian, but I don't see why should they be allowed to project this into Wikimedia projects. Is this really acceptable policy in a local Wikipedia language edition? Freedom of speech, so long as it is not insulting or harmful (e.g. personal attacks, Nazism), is a core tenet across Wikimedia. If people do not have the emotional maturity not to get flared by peacefully-expressed differing opinions, I fail to see why should they contribute to any Wikimedia project. Advice on obtaining a local review of a Georgian Wikipedia biography draft

[edit]

Hello. I am seeking procedural guidance on an unresolved request on Georgian Wikipedia concerning a userspace draft about Emilia Alimbarashvili. I am connected to the subject and have disclosed my conflict of interest locally.

The main-space article was deleted in October 2025 on notability grounds. On 7 August 2026 I requested an independent review of a revised userspace draft, including a February 2026 Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty feature published after those deletions. The request was archived on 29 August without a reply or conclusion. On 8 September I posted a follow-up asking whether the draft had been assessed and which local procedure to use. As of 12 September, that request also has no reply.

For completeness, the separate English draft was declined at AfC on 4 September because its sources were not considered sufficient to establish notability. I understand that publication depends on an independent assessment of sources and the applicable local criteria.

Could someone advise which Georgian Wikipedia venue or procedure is appropriate for reconsideration in light of additional sources, and how to obtain an uninvolved local review when requests remain unanswered? I am asking for help accessing the appropriate process, not a decision by Meta to publish the article. I have not moved the userspace draft into main space. Thank you.
