Loafism of the Day
Be More Awesome

On workday snacks:

The only thing that saves me is that [the vending machine] is down on the main floor which means I would have to walk up and down 2 WHOLE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS, and I'm gnenerally too lazy and apathetic to put that much effort into getting a Ho-Ho.

And yes, I DO believe in fairies. :)

Headline

Cleveland, OH, August4, 2009— The Stars Are Right.  The wait is finally over.  Loaf has a car.

A 2003 Toyota Matrix, to be exact.  No, not as new as I was planning on getting, but for the price I got, I can barely complain.  And, true to my nature, after the agony of waiting week after week to find a car at auction, I wound up purchasing locally.  Go figure.  But, she's beautiful and I love her, even though I need to do a few upgrades.  Keyless entry is a must.  Now, we're not talking life or death here but, geez, this is my first car with power windows.  I'm stepping up in the world, so I'd like keyless entry too.  And, a new stereo.  My car predates auxilary input capability and since I almost exclusively listen to my iPod in the car, I'm now pricing stereos.  Fortunately, that's a relatively cheap upgrade.  I can't even express my joy at having my own wheels again, to be able to return to my normal schedule, to have the waiting OVER!

I probably won't bother posting pictures here, so if I end up taking any, I'll post them to FB.

*vroom!*

Day of Reckoning

Well, today may be the day.  Many of you already know through personal tellings or my Facebook updates, but I've been without a car for the entirety of July.  Needless to say, it's been a bit of a rough month.  The being a one car household thing really hasn't been that bad, it's everything else:  the searching, the financing, the deciding, the waiting OH GOD THE WAITING.

Patience is not one of my virtues, have I ever mentioned that?

I decided to go the auction route because I knew that I could get a better car than I could possibly afford right now paying retail.  The downside to that has been the weekly rollercoaster of checking the listings constantly until they're final, and then the letdown of not having found something, only to then begin the anticipation for the next week.

But, finally, I am bidding on a car today.  And if that one falls through, I have a back up.  So, barring any bizarre twists of Fate or any occurrences in the fine print on insurance policies (war, acts of god, etc.) I should have a car by the end of the day.  Then, all I'll have to do is go pick it up.

This is all happening in Erie, you see.  Let it not be said that I will not go to great lengths for a good deal.

Excuse while I go stare at my phone until it rings and bite my fingernails down into bloody stumps.

Edit:  Passed on car #1.  Went too high at auction.  Now my buying minions are off to take a look at another car at a local dealer.  This one has a moonroof.  Okay, I'll admit, that's neat. :)

Edit #2:  So, both cars were a bust.  #1 went too high and #2 made a "chirpy" sound in the engine.  Bloody hell.  It may be time to expand the ol' horizons.  I've been staunchly wanting to buy a Toyota because of their reputation.  That's still my first choice, but I could get a Cobalt, for example, for under 6 grand.  That's a rather appealing, if boring, alternative.  To quote Ms. Vida Boheme:  "Well ladies, it looks like it comes down to the age old question: Style, or, substance?"

Technical Difficulties, Movies, and Running

That pretty much sums up my weekend.  I sat down to begin work on my cookie entry on Saturday, but for some reason my computer wasn't reading the pictures I had just downloaded from my camera.  (and no entry about sparkly cookies would be complete without visual aids)  Fortunately, I'm married to a photographer, so he's going to figure out how to salvage them for me.  :)

The Half Marathon was a great time yesterday!  More on that in another post.

And we finally went to see Star Trek yesterday.  I must say, I was very iffy, even on the way to the theatre.  I know everyone has given it great reviews, but part of my just couldn't help but think, eh, I think I can wait for DVD.  Glad I didn't.  It was awesome!  Gave me chills and goosebumps in all the right ways, and totally makes me want to watch all the movies again, and perhaps a "greatest hits" version of the show.  (it has been a loooooong time since I've seen an actual episode of Start Trek.  All I remember are Tribbles.)  I was disappointed there was no Harry Potter preview, but the Terminator preview was impressive enough to convince Steve and I that we need to see it in the theatre.  These damn movies and their CGI makes it impossible for us to get the same movie experience watching them on our pathetic, non-wide screen, non-LCD television.  (I'm still kicking myself for missing Transformers in the theatre, a mistake that will not be repeated!!)  Besides, I love the aesthetic of going to the movies.  The Moosetracks ice cream doesn't hurt either. ;)

More to come!

Mini update on me

Yes folks, I'm still alive.  Really really.

I must admit that I think I'm more of an observer rather than a contributor to the bloggosphere.  And that's okay.  I do have an entry to post about some sparkly cookies I made last weekend, but that's a couple days away.  I have not had enough spare minutes in a row to download the darn pictures off of my camera and put together an entry.  But I will.

So let's see, what else?  Running season is in full swing and I'm feeling pretty good so far, though I've got some strides to make in the gain muscle tone/lose body fat arena.  The Cleveland Half Marathon is this Sunday, which I'm looking forward to.  And it looks like we'll have perfect weather!  Steve and I have vowed to tame the wilderness that is our backyard this year.  We'll see how that goes.  Fortuantely, I do love to pull weeds.  I find destruction very cathartic.  Con season is officially upon me!  I registered for events for Origins yesterday and I really need to start getting serious about my Dragon Con costumes.  I'm going to run out of time before I know it.

That's all for now!  Hopefully this weekend I'll tell the tale of the sparkly cookies. :)

I would say this guy deserves a medal, but he'd probably melt it down.

Michigan lottery winner gives prize to charity

Seriously, when I read this, I had to stop and ask myself, has that ever been my first instict when I have the occasional "Someday When I Win the Lottery" daydream?  Um, no.  My thoughts normally run something like: "pay bills, quit job, go on extended lifetime vacation."  But, after getting rid of my debt, would I really need all that money?  I mean, I actually like my job, so it's pretty unlikely that I would quit.  And I know that there are lots of people out there who struggle day in and day out just to keep the lights on.

Now, of course, the cynical side of me is going to say, well, he's the VP and COO to some important-sounding company, so giving away 10 grand probably wouldn't mean the same to him as it would to me.  But still.  He did it.  And maybe he's not driving a Mercedes and doesn't own a golf course, I don't know.  It's just nice to hear about someone doing something genuinely altruistic for a change.

I daresay it almost makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
