Descantverse Character Guide (Original Trilogy)

And now for your edification and entertainment, I present to you a complete guide to all the characters in the Descant trilogy... Because I needed a list... And stuff.

Most have PB icons. The ones who don’t are either too minor for one or I never figured out who their PB is. Mostly the former though.

And so here we go: The characters, divided into Humans, Angels, Demons, Grigori, and Lesser Between Creatures, and Between Leaders.

Humans (Mundane and Otherwise)

Desmond Damian Descant: (Not his real name.) A mundane human cursed by Ceirdowyn after she witnessed his suicide attempt to "live forever until he finds something worth dying for." Not helping out this curse is the fact that both Heaven and Hell are after his soul and have sent representatives to try to sway him to one side or the other- representatives who have now become his closest friends.

In recent times, he has traveled the world, working as a paranormal investigator because he prefers that world to his old mortal world for several reasons. Selfish, arrogant, foolhardy, and prone to tempting fate, Descant is known for being one thing- neutral. For every bad thing he's done, he has a good deed, which keeps his soul from both Heaven and Hell.
PB: John Barrowman

Danielle Morningway:
Descant’s reincarnation. After his death during the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t, Heaven and Hell couldn’t figure out what to do with Descant’s soul, so they sent him back to earth to try again. Danielle lived sixteen years without knowing anything of her past life (beyond some crazy dreams) up until a traumatic event involving the murder of her entire family by a vengeful angel left her psyche shattered and allowed Descant’s latent conscious to emerge at the forefront of her mind, giving her a split personality and the fear that if Descant’s conscious mind overpowers hers, she’ll be lost forever.
PB: Amanda Bynes

Arista Jameson: A powerful witch, leader of the Las Vegas Coven, and owner of an Occult bookstore. She is one of Descant's best "human" friends and his go-to girl about matters of the Between while he’s in Vegas. She harbored a not-so-secret crush on Descant, but he never quite seem to reciprocate those same feelings, so she turned herself to Azazel, instead, although the relationship proved to be unhealthy for both of them, and after an unwanted pregnancy and a miscarriage, she left him.

As of the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t, Arista has lost her magic, but she still keeps in contact with her supernatural consorts.
PB: Amy Lee

Dawson Linus: The first holder of the Emissary's Watch and, like Des, a human cursed with immortality. Once upon a time, she was Lillith, the first wife of Adam, but she fell from grace long before he did when she became obsessed with Ceirdowyn's charms and abilities and wanted them for herself. Ceirdowyn couldn't bestow her gifts on any ordinary mortal, but she allowed Lillith to live on forever as her sole emissary- the first person who stood between humanity and fey creatures. God saw her as an abomination and cast her out of Eden, replacing her with Eve, and Lillith lived the rest of her years in Ceirdowyn's shadow, obsessing over her position as Ceirdowyn's emissary and all the while knowing that the true emissary would eventually come along and be her downfall. Currently, she lives in New York as a playwright and an open spokesperson for the Between, taking her duties as the emissary very seriously... Or at least that's what she did up until she had to lure Desmond Descant to New York to fufill his destiny.
PB: Laetitia Casta

Sadie Wallace: A chorus girl on Broadway and a budding witch just coming into her powers, whose precocious knack for opening rifts, caused a huge, uncloseable rift to be opened just behind St. Mark’s, allowing Between creatures to flood the city. She’s lived her life perpetually in her half-sister Dinah’s shadow, but firmly believes her newfound magic is a step in a completely new direction, although, being naive and unable to control her powerful abilities, it proves to be just as much of a danger as a blessing. She's also the keeper of the Emissary's Watch after Des refuses to take up the mantle and leaves it in her hands.
PB: Missy Peregrym

Dinah Alaire/Diana Wallace: Sadie’s egotistical half-sister and a Broadway’s "golden girl." At the age of the only twenty-five, she has two Tony’s and more stardrom than most people her age can boast. This, of course, isn’t so much because of her talent, but because she made a few deals with Ceirdowyn, although it’s unclear at the moment what exactly she traded for her fame.
PB: Vanessa Carlton

Caroline Brighton: A young and gifted archaeologist with a special fondness for the supernatural who hired Des to find a group of rival fortune-seekers who stole information regarding the last colony of dragons located in an Aztec temple in the Amazon. Unfortunately, the entire case was a ruse to get Descant to lead her to the dragons so that she could start a supernatural creature genocide starting with them. This, of course, was revealed after Des had already fallen in love with her and when offered the choice "Who do you stand by- humans or freaks?" in a desperate decision whether to kill her or save the dragons, he kills her, thereby proving that he stands by whatever needs saving at the time. Des hasn't had a stable relationship since.
PB: Melissa George
Father Jacob Mason: A priest at Mark's and the latest in a long line of emissaries to Heaven, all of whom share the exact same soul. ("Joan of Arc? Yeah, I used to be her.") Given that he's fully aware of what he is- just a conduit to the angels in a human shell- he's more than a little jaded about the whole concept of God, and angels, and Heaven, in general, and is, really, a bit of prick, but considering the angel he speaks to most is Tabris... That's understandable. Also there's a Rift to the Between behind his church. That makes me grumpy too.
PB: Glenn Fitzgerald

Cain Sanford: An Antichrist (yes an- there are a lot of them) and the one who was Called during the Apocalypse-That-Wasn't, but, unfortunately, it was ended before she could really do anything, so now she's just a perpetually sixteen-year-old girl with phenomenal cosmic power that she can't really do anything with, because, you know, the world kinda has to be ending for her to use those abilities. This makes her kinda pissy. She also happens to be Danielle's best friend. Danielle got no choice in this matter.
PB: Cariba Heine

Angels

Pagiel: A Cherub and Descant's Guardian Angel. She is extremely serious about her job, because she is generally accepted by most of her kind to be an incompetent fool and a failure, and she desperately wants to rectify that image of herself by getting Descant's soul. According to Descant she is essentially, "Every fluffy image of an angel you've ever seen," and unfortunately that's a far cry from what angels really are. She has an extremely beautiful singing voice which is the one thing she prides herself on above all other things.
PB: Kristin Chenoweth

Israfel: "The Angel of Judgement." Once one of the most powerful angels in Heaven, millennia of being beaten down by Gabriel have left her bitter and spiteful and more than little bitchy. She was once known for having the most beautiful voice in all of Heaven, but hasn’t a sung a single note since she was forced by Gabriel to sing at The Judgement of the Fallen as she watched the Archangels break her former lover Azazel, who turned his back on her to Fall (and she has never really forgiven him for it.)

She’s, uh, also Pagiel’s mother, although she doesn’t find that out until later.
PB: Julia Murney

Tabris: "The Angel of Free Will." God created him to be humanity's soul Watchman and he is forever doomed to walk the Earth as long as there are humans still alive. He is also the sort-of "supervisor" of every lesser angel on Earth and makes private deals with the demon's supervisor Balthasar. Tabris is known for being more "human" than most angels, but only the bad parts of humanity, as he is irritating, deceitful, arrogant, and generally perceived to be a "lying little weasel."
PB: Seth Gabel

Gabriel: Leader of the Archangels. Very uptight and almost black-hearted, she has a very firm view of what she believes is "The Creator's Divine Plan" and has become convinced He has strayed from the path. She hates Pagiel, because Pagiel represents everything angels once were and Gabriel is determined to squash out any part of that "old regime." It’s also quite clear that she had a fierce rivalry with Israfel in the past and, as such, made it her life’s work to destroy her every chance she gets.
PB: Freema Agyeman

Barachiel: The Archangel in charge of Guardian Angels- generally viewed as Pagiel's real "boss." He tends to scare people with his appearance, but he's actually the most gentle of the Archangels and is really a big teddy bear. After Gabriel was imprisoned, he was left in charge of the Archangels.
PB: Chi McBride

Selaphiel:
Gabriel's Second-in-Command. She has a wild nature, but even she fully understands when enough is enough and draws the line at some of Gabriel's more violent methods. She and Barachiel have a not-so-secret love affair going on.
PB: Samaire Armstrong

Jegudiel:
One of the original Seven Archangels. Generally regarded as being something of a pansy. He has an extremely sensitive nose and reportedly cannot stand going to earth because he despises the smell of humans. Also regarded as one of the weaker fighters in the entire group, he’s generally used as a scout because he’s quick and agile and good at not being seen.

Michael and Raphael:
Twin, mute Archangels and Gabriel’s "bodyguards."After Gabriel’s fall from grace, they refused to serve any master than her and are now imprisoned right along with her.

Uriel:
The youngest Archangel, known for sadistic, violent streak made all the more frightening by her childlike veneer. She worships the ground Gabriel walks on and is almost obsessively in love with her.

The Metatron:
The "Voice of God" and the only angel higher ranked than the Archangels. Due to the fact that The Creator is a force best left unseen even by His angels, The Metatron acts as His representative in any and all affairs. (This is, in fact, one of the reasons for the Fall beyond the desire for free will- Lucifer thought that God was hiding behind a curtain and found that be cowardly, which is why he always deals with matters personally when he has to.) Because most angels look young, his obvious age gives him a grandfatherly aura and a lot of angels look up to and respect him because of his wisdom and (for the most part) kindness (although he can be a right bastard when he wants to be). Gabriel, of course, hates him, but she hates everyone who threatens her power..
PB: David Carradine

Azrael: The "Angel of Death," who, in fact, takes his job far too seriously. So seriously, that he thinks mass genocide of an entire race is a good way to spend a Saturday night. He practically worships Gabriel to the extent that he thinks she hung the moon and the stars (and actually believes that she’s The Creator walking amongst angels and that The Metatron is just a lying old fraud, and that everyone else is crazy for believing him.)
PB: Ben Jelen

Sachiel: Otherwise known as "Sachiel the Healer." An angel not so much banished to Earth like Tabris, but one who chooses to be on Earth and keep tabs on her breathern, whom she heals when they're injured, which makes her something of an angelic doctor. She also deals with the Grigori Registry, because Tabris is too stuck up to do that himself. She actually dates Tabris off and on and is killed by Azrael in Falls the Shadow, prompting Tabris to finally get involved in something.
PB: Jorja Fox

Nuriel: An extremely young (and more than a little neurotic) Cherub and Danielle Morningway's Guardian Angel following Pagiel's retirement.
PB: Alexz Johnson

Demons

Mathias: A Tempter who is known for his laid back attitude and the general undemonic charisma about him. He is extremely good at his job and his superiors despise him both for that and the fact that he seems altogether too fond of earthly affairs (he chain smokes, enjoys booze and human women, and actually enjoys Descant's company to such an extent that he doesn't even try to tempt him.) If one thing can be said about Mathias it's that he's a joker at heart and will goad anyone (especially Pagiel) out of amusement. However, he is also severely violent, but it takes quite a bit to bring that side out of him. He’s also irrefutably in love with Pagiel, a feeling she actually, despite her better judgement, shares.
PB: Gaspard Ulliel

Agares: The Archduke of Hell. Oddly enough he isn't nearly as violent in nature as Gabriel and is something of a gentleman, but even he has his limits, especially when someone pushes his buttons. He tends to get really violent around Mathias, especially due to his obsession with trying to break him and turn him into an ideal warrior. He may or may not have a not-so-secret lust for Gabriel, which stems from his obsession with plotting a war under God and the Devil's very noses with her. Unlike Gabriel, he retains his title after the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t, although his fellow lords were almost all killed in the scuffle and Lucifer punished him severely for betraying him.
PB: Lee Pace

The Nine Dukes of Hell:
Including Agares, they are Bathin, Valefar, Gusion, Zepar, Uvall, Berith, Vapula, and Focalor . Each one rules one of the nine levels of Hell. Only Agares and Bathin are actually mentioned by name and, in fact, almost all of them are wiped out in the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t.

Balthasar:
The demonic equivalent to Tabris on Earth. He keeps all of the Tempters in line and makes frequent reports to Agares and the Dukes. He owns a brothel in the backstreets of Vegas and keeps the whores doped up to keep them from talking about what goes on in his place and, in fact, encourages them to watch the bloodshed that goes on in his basement whenever the Dukes come to town and are in need of a little meaningless violence. He is known for his violent nature, especially in regards to Mathias.

After the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t, he was promoted to Duke in replace of Bathin and Mathias’s rival Tempter Oriax took his job.

Oriax:
One of Mathias’s fellow Tempters who took over Balthasar’s position after he was promoted. Although of a higher rank than Mathias, he’s pathologically jealous of him for being far more skilled in his art than he is and lords it over him with his newfound position. Mathias sees him as basically being Tabris’s demonic counterpart, although Oriax is far more vile than Tabris could ever hope to be.
PB: Daniela Sela

Lucifer: The Prince of Darkness. Satan. Beazelbub. You know his names. Lucifer is the ruler of Hell, once an angel and a powerful one at that. His seething hatred of the way things were run in Heaven led him to Fall farther than most angels were willing to go and God punished him by giving him Hell. Not that Lucifer minds all that much. "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven," after all. He is extremely cocky, extremely violent, and extremely involved in the affairs of his demons which he considers a step-up from God, who hides behind the Metatron.
PB: Quentin Tarantino

Leraje: A very young (but prodical) Tempter assigned to Danielle Morningway, following Mathias's retirement. Definition of "wild child" and even more unruly and arrogant than Mathias, himself, which is saying something.
PB: Danielle Panabaker

Grigori/Nephilim

Azazel: A Grigori, famous for being at the forefront of The Fall (a move that cost him the love of his life). Blinded by Gabriel and once thought to be sealed forever in some desolate pit in the middle of the desert, he has since been put on probation and now keeps track of all the Grigori on Earth. He is generally regarded as being an unlikeable, snarky bastard, but he does have his moments of likeability.
PB: David Anders

Ronel:
A weasely lackey for the Irish mafia known for playing two sides of the fence- specifically working for both Caitlin Kennedy and Liam O’Rouke, the two most powerful mafia leaders in Vegas. In Descant’s words, he’s the finest example of what a Grigori is to most creatures- utter slime. He does have a soft spot- his daughter Devi.

Devi:
Ronel’s young Nephilim daughter.

Gagiel/Gustav Styrdevant:
Once the Grigori in charge of protecting and keeping an eye on the other Grigori, his murder started the long chain of events that eventually led to the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t, and also left Azazel in charge of all of his assets.

Hana Styrdevant:
Gagiel’s adult daughter who asked Descant to take the case after her father’s disappearance/murder who was eventually murdered by Agares and The Dukes after Descant found his body.

Lesser Between Creatures

Marni Abrams: A chorus dancer who has the "unfortunate misfortune" of being born a werewolf. Related vaguely to Caitlin Kennedy, a werewolf mob boss in Vegas. Also Sadie’s best friend who has on, more than one occasion, offered to eat Dinah for her. She is known for being sexually promiscuous and has earned notoriety in some circles for eating her dates whenever she gets around to sleeping with them because sex makes her hungry.
PB: PJ Harvey

Luke Raleigh: Dinah’s "leading man," a young rising star on Broadway whom Dinah is more or less obsessed with. He has a few secrets of his own- namely the fact that he’s what Norse mythology calls a Jormungandr, otherwise known as a giant, fucking snake. He is more than a little sensitive about it and wants more than anything to be human.
PB: Stephen Dorff

Tavisha Baruch: A famous Broadway composer who just so happens to be a vampire. She currently lives an extremely violent life with her husband and partner Monty, whom she takes great pleasure in trying to kill.
PB: Amanda Palmer

Montgomery "Monty" Bader: A famous lyricist and Tavisha’s beallagued (although equally violent and snarky) partner and husband. Also a vampire.
PB: Burn Gorman

Rafe Dryden: A slightly gleeful and hyperactive stagehand and "some sort of chimera" under a glamour to make himself appear human. He keeps to the shadows and generally sees more than he should because of this, which he used to his advantage.
PB: Matthew Lillard

Caitlin Kennedy: A werewolf and head of an Irish mafia family in Vegas, not to mention one of Descant's oldest confidantes.
PB: Jennifer Carpenter.

Between Leaders

Ceirdowyn: The Fae-Witch of the Between, generally viewed there as being a goddess, while on Earth, she is viewed as being a trickster of legend- the only person to trick both God and the Devil and live to tell about it. She placed the curse on Descant and has believed him to be "hers" ever since. She never does anything asked of her without a price and she has a horrible habit of teaching people who anger her lessons in most violent and horrifying ways. (Descant is a firm believer in the fact that "he got off easy.") However, despite her playful nature, she is a force to be reckoned with and making deals with her tends to have a price that cuts far deeper than one can initially imagine.
PB: Natalie Dormer

The Horsechicks of the Apocalypse
Contrary to popular belief, the Four Horsemen were not men as the Bible tells, but women- Furies from the Between, living among humans until the End Times. Currently, they're in the form of the Arcadia Sisters- Delilah, Pandora, Will, and Fiona.

Delilah Arcadia/Death: A tax lawyer by day and Descant's worst nightmare.... All the time, really. Cold, calculating, cruel, and everything else you'd consider true of Death incarnate. Her primary goal in life is to see Descant brought down to the point of obsession, a matter that Descant finds worthy of mocking.
PB: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Pandora Arcadia/Pestilence: Easily the least evil of the Horsechicks, although that isn't saying much. She's perpetually giddy and overly fond of creating new poisons and dangerous substances. She has a not-so-secret obsession with Descant due to her fondness for using him as a test subject for her experiments and tends to pounce him whenever she sees him.
PB: Lisa Goldstein

Wilemina "Will" Arcadia/War: To the world, she's the world's youngest video game programmer, to the people who know better, she's the embodiment of violence wrapped in a tiny, adorable, completely sadistic package.
PB: Tish Adair

Fiona Arcadia/Famine: A model who promotes anorexic lifestyle out of pure amusement and respect for her original art. She's bitter and irritated all the time, which Descant believes is because she's constantly hungry. She and War tend to be closer to each other than they are to the other two Horsechicks for whatever reason.  PB: Anne Marie Duff
