Hey everyone,
just thought i'd update you all on what's going on with me. I have been working out pretty consistantly at least two times a week for the past month and a half, sometimes more, for about an hour at a time, through an Aerobic Kickboxing class. I'm now taking that four times a week but so far we haven't actually met the entire four times per week. I do some activity outside of that--walking to class, some hikes, and occasionally (okay rarely) working out in the gym on top of the class. I have been trying to be careful about what I eat, and I think I've been doing pretty good. I'm eating a lot more salads and less greasy food. Like I said, I *think* I've been pretty healthy, but it's kind of hard to tell as I live on campus and my eating options are sometimes limited. I'm also drinking shitloads of water--usually at least 90 ounces a day. I shoot for 128, and I get there about half the time, probably. My problem now is that it's been about 1.5 months or so, and I haven't seen any differences. I know that I wouldn't see any major differences in such a short time period, but it still gets me discouraged. This seems to be my pattern--I work out fairly regularly for a couple months and when I don't see any changes I get discouraged and give up. I *think* I might have toned up a bit, but it's hard to tell as I don't have a scale so I never weigh myself, and I haven't noticed a drastic difference with my clothes. The only thing is that my belt seems to be a bit looser. I can't see any visible difference though. So anyway, anyone have any experiences with this or tips to give me? I know I just have to keep on trucking to get to the point where things actually *change*, but my motivation is starting to wane...I also learned through my class that you need to work out 5-6 times per week to actually begin to change your body shape, but to me, this just seems practically impossible. four times a week is already kinda pushing it with me. I don't know, maybe I'm just lazy. Or maybe my body will start to get used to it. I just already feel like I'm doing so much, and the thought of 5-6 times per week is just way too intimidating.
so anyway, that's what's going on with me. if anyone has any good "get motivated" tips, send em my way! hope you are all still doing well.

Hi everyone, long time, no post.
I feel that I will be using this more again as I have made a decision today to stop using Weight Watchers. I haven't really been following it in months and I feel guilty about it most of the time, so I think it's time for a change, but we'll see how it goes.
Right now I feel like I just can't lose weight. It feels really hard for me and I think I need to work harder on accepting myself the way I am. I'm very up and down about this, so again, we'll see how it goes.
How are all of you? Any changes for anyone out there? Anybody feeling good?
I hope so.
Love, yer mod.

It's been an interesting summer so far, folks. Last night I had a fat freakout (new rule: no weighing self before bed) and while I did cry a lot, Aaron and I worked out some new ground rules and ideas. I think it's really important to be able to work with and talk to someone about weight loss, but more importantly, about the state of mind that goes with it.
( Some of the new rules, in case you're interestedCollapse )
I've been learning a lot lately, especially about working out. For one, I think having a workout buddy is a great thing. I used to think I liked working out alone, but it's way to easy to let myself not do it. When someone else is there to push you or make sure you do it, it's a lot easier. For example, Aaron and I decided last night we would work out this afternoon, no excuses. He wakes me up and the first thing I do is make an excuse. After a few minutes, I change my mind and we both go work out and I feel a lot better for it. When someone else is relying on you, it makes it feel like you're not only letting yourself down, but someone else as well.
Additional thoughts: Music is a great way to get yourself through a workout, but make sure it's at the right pace. Last week I nearly killed myself with Reel Big Fish (much too fast). I noticed that some Bad Religion is at a really good pace if you want to go quickly.
So there's my thoughts and learning process thus far. I hope everyone is doing well. Please update! Thank you!
Love, yer mod!

Does anyone swear by a good veggie cook book, something that provides low fat recipes? Or a good light veggie diet? I don't want anything unhealthy, no atkin's or south beach or shit like that. Weight Watchers is a no.
And how's everyone doing? I've been swimming about half a mile everyday, or close to it, and I'm starting to feel really great.

Right now I'm not a happy body. It's too hot.
What do you do to beat the heat?

| Some motivation is needed |
[30 May 2005|12:17pm] |
So, I'm back home for the summer and am just bursting with all kinds of summer goals, as I usually am around this time of May. I think I'm being a little bit more realistic this time, but my goals aren't concrete at all. I just want to read a lot, be outside as much as possible, eat better and work out or at least be somewhat active. Usually my list is like 3 miles long, so at least this time around I'm not going crazy, but at the same time I think my goals are too vague to really accomplish them. But it seems like whenever I do set concrete goals for myself I don't achieve them. So I guess I'll try to figure something out about that. My main thing at this point is that I'm having a really hard time getting the motivation to work out. It seems like there's always obstacles in the way. I don't have a membership to a gym or a treadmill in the house, so I'm pretty limited to walking, hiking, running, or biking outside. This also creates a bit of a problem since it tends to rain pretty much always here. But even without that, I have a real problem getting up the motivation. I want to start running before I go to work, but I have to leave at like 7:15 or 7:30 for work so that would mean I'd be getting up at like 6. And I just don't have that kind of motivation. It takes a whole lot to get me out of bed at 9 to go to class, none the less at 6 so I can go for a run. It just doesn't happen. And I find that if I don't work out in the morning, then I don't do it at all. After work I'm usually too tired or I have other stuff to do, so I don't do it after I get home. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I'm thinking about going walking on my lunch break, which would be good, but I'd like to get some cardio in. Maybe if I walk on my lunch break and go hiking or running on weekends? I don't know. I'm just feeling a little overwhelmed and directionless, so I'd appreciate any advice that anyone has. Thanks everyone for listening and I hope you're all doing well! Enjoy your summer and be healthy and happy! :)

I am a dynamo today.
I did aqua aerobics, walked home (in the hot, GORGEOUS weather) and just did 50 minutes of aerobics.
And I played with kids.
And I stayed on points today.
I think I win.
How are you?

| My feel yummy tip of the day |
[18 May 2005|03:15pm] |
Take a bath! I did and I was uber-girly about it too. I used foaming milk bath from The Body Shop (highly recommended), used a bunch of candles (because I have so many just sitting around), a bath pillow and relaxing music.
I seriously feel like a million bucks.
If you haven't done one in awhile, go all out. It's a great pick me up.

| OW. my NECK. |
[26 Apr 2005|12:14pm] |
during my last pilates workout, i must have been holding my head wrongly. i was lying on the ground and had to have my shoulder blades off the floor, which stressed out my neck. but i felt that immediately and rested my head and neck for the rest of the workout.
this was on thursday. it is now tuesday and my neck is still in screaming agony. i've used arnica gel, ben-gay, heat, and massage, and it still is intensely stiff and tight. the muscles feel HORRIBLE under my skin - there are huge knots and it is so uncomfortable.
i thought i might have been sleeping on it weirdly, but the past few nights i've been waking up in the same comfy neck-friendly position i've gone to sleep in. plus, my bed is EXTREMELY comfortable, and it's hard to wake up sore from it.
how can i make this go away? it hurts so MUCH.

So I've been a bad little beaver... or Becca.
I really haven't been sticking to my 10 pm deadline. It's so hard to do as a college student and I've become such a nap fan, but I realize that getting more sleep will make me feel way better. So I really am going to try...
next week.
As far as working out, my plan to do something everyday faltered as I did get sick (lame). Plan for next week: do pilates everyday. I already took a class, so I can always slam together 10 minutes, but I'm going to try to do the DVD I have. Also, aqua aerobics. I feel lame for not getting in this past week, but I didn't really think it would be a good idea.
How's everyone doing?

still staying on task exercise-wise! food-wise, not so good. it seems i either eat a lot, or i eat hardly anything. today i skipped lunch.
i think once i graduate college in may and start working full-time, i'll fall into a schedule, and so i'll tend to start eating meals again instead of just stuffing my face whenever i see free food. heh.

I'm feeling generally pretty awful (cold and what have you), but I still managed to do stuff yesterday.
Steff and I went on an about 40 minute walk/jog/run from my place to the Steel Bridge back over Burnside and home. It felt good, but I'd like to be a bit more hardcore. Not with this cold or anything. Bah!
I gave myself a three day weekend yesterday and I wish I could just stay home for the rest of the week and get better, but that's not going to happen.
Food wise, being sick makes things easier. I made sure to try to hit my target yesterday, but I was 3 points under. Oops. I didn't feel hungry or anything, so I guess that's just the sickness talking.
I'm also going to try to institute a bed time of 10 pm most days of the week. I think the extra sleep will help, a lot!

It's so late and I'm still up! I should be sleeping, I've been so tired lately, I just had surgery last Friday so I really should be resting all that I can...but I'm still wide awake :(
I'm feeling recovered enough that Chris and I are taking a walk with Braeden to Cope Park tomorrow. I really want to start bringing Braeden *my 10.5 month old son* outside more often. I live in such a beautiful environment, I really want him to be encouraged to be outdoors. Seeing his mommy and daddy having fun outside will most likely help that :)
I have been lax on my restricted diet, mainly because my gallbladder is gone. I had this crazy streak where I thought, NOW I CAN EAT WHATEVER I WANT. BAD IDEA. I started to feel tired, bloated, always thirsty... I need to get back into the routine of a low calorie, fruit and veggie rich diet. I know I can do it, it's just easy to fall into that bad habit again.... right Aaron and Becca, cause I was on vacation hehe :P
Anyways, I think I'll head to bed now. I need some energy for playing tomorrow!

This month's issue of Vogue is the Shape issue. While coming from Vogue, I thought this was just be ridiculous and another way to celebrate tall and thin as the only body type.
On further review, it actually had some really good things to say.
For example, on an article about yoga: "What keeps you looking and feeling gorgeous and vital is the knowledge and well-being that comes from befriending your own body" Granted these women are rich and can afford a helluva a lot more than I can in these ways, that seemed pretty on the money. The article goes on to talk about how she didn't lose weight doing yoga nor did she become super thin (thus far), but her body changed and she felt better living in it. I thought that was pretty great.
Also amusing was the gym etiquette. There was a lot, so I'll just make a random list: Everyone must bathe before working out. Don't sing loudly along with your iPod. Don't hog machines (it's called working-in). Along with that, one should return everything to its proper place. Don't go when you have a cold. Arrive on time to classes and the first two rows are for the most experienced people in the class.
It was rather amusing and kind of snooty at spots, but it is Vogue. Basically, remember that you are in a shared space and treat it that way.
Later I'll post the info about what clothes are right for your body type (combine if you are both curvy and short, like myself).

Hi everyone, I'm Hilary and despite the name of this community I'm not happy with my body :/
I have been battling obesity for a long time now, and although a lot of friends tell me "Hilary, you're not obese" it doesn't motivate me to do anything about my weight unless I tell myself "Yes, you are obese"
I was doing the OptiFast program, which was amazing. It challenged my willpower, obedience, self-empowerment and most importantly of all, changing my habits. I lost close to 35 pounds on the diet, but developed Gallstones *EEK*. As soon as I heal from my gallstone surgery I plan on starting the program again. I have another 75 pounds to lose before I am close to my healthy weight.
I am, everyday trying to attain a healthy body image as well as a healthy and happy body.

Sooo i've been on weight watchers trying to lose some weight. I've lost quite a bit so far but i'm still nowhere near where I'd like to be. Some days I wake up and I really feel like i've lost weight, and other days it just feels like nothing's happening. I'm doing this because I know I need to be more healthy, but sometimes I just want to give up because I'm sick of the bombardment the media gives people who are overweight. I believe it is possible to be overweight and be happy, though apparently if you're fat you're "not really yourself"
