tomboy-ng 0.42c (beta, announcing Misty and tomboy-ng-GTK3))

Choose a tag to compare

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 24 Jul 05:41

This release page contains tomboy-ng v0.42c. A beta release is not as well tested as a formal release, this one has a number of small bug fixes and introduces a new and seriously untested Sync Model, Misty. Further, we finally have the long awaited GTK3 version of tomboy-ng. Care is needed and if you spot a problem, PLEASE report it.

Bug Fixes

  • when searching, an opening note should jump to term even if wrapped in inverted commas.
  • Bug when renaming a notebook.
  • Bug where a newline would be added at the end of certain notes
  • Occasional crash when starting github sync.
  • Better triple click to select a sentence.
  • Lots of changes to accommodate GTK3.

New Features

tomboy-ng-gtk3 - find it below, as a deb, tomboy-ng_0.42c-0_amd64GTK3.deb or tomboy-ngGTK3-0.42c-1.x86_64.rpm. Does need a distro dated later than, eg 2004.

Misty - a stand alone webservice server that allows you to sync between tomboy-ng installs. At present, the server only runs on Linux and Windows but you can connect to it with tomboy-ng running on Linux, Windows or Mac (Mac tomboy-ng 0.42c yet to come). Its small, very easy to get running (compared to file sync) and fast (compared to github sync). It does only the sync part, does not offer a web based view of your notes (but I might add that, depending on feedback).

Misty can be used in two modes, a very easy setup but very insecure mode (suited to secure home networks only) or a mode that uses SSL and a password and is reasonably secure. Please read the note file in the misty package carefully.

Misty is a separate download, no installer, just a tarball containing the binary and a (tomboy) note file with instructions (Left click note and choose tomboy-ng). There is an arm32 (ie Raspberry Pi), an x86_64 linux or Win64 packages to download below. Misty requires at least tomboy-ng 0.42c or later, anything earlier than this does not offer Misty as a Sync choice.

Read more about Misty here https://github.com/tomboy-notes/tomboy-ng/tree/master/experimental/Misty-Small but download it from here, the normal tomboy-ng (beta?) releases page.

Above all else, remember Misty is a experimental package, be careful, take good backups (tomboy-ng makes that easy) and report what you find.

Note : Github likes to hide some of the download files. Please click the word "Assets" immediately below here and, perhaps "Show all assets" below the list of download files if you don't see the one you want.

History :

  • Beta Release 2026-07-24
  • Added gtk3 rpm 2026-07-28
  • Replaced both gtk3 packages following a report of instability. Again on 7 August 2026
  • Added (belatedly) the Windows installer, 2026-09-05

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 17 Oct 04:26

This release page contains tomboy-ng v0.42b. A beta release is not as well tested as a formal release, this one contains a certain amount of new code, fixes a couple of important bugs and introduces some new features. But care is needed and if you spot a problem, PLEASE report it.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that may prevent successful creation of a new GitHub sync repository.
  • Fixed a bug that may have caused problems converting to MarkDown and back to tomboy (eg when using GithubSync) when mark up tags overlapped.
  • Fixed a bug affecting the auto save (and reopen) when a computer is powered down with tomboy-ng still running.
  • Fixed a bug that might occur if you manually edit the config file.
  • Fixed a crash if you backspace in a completely empty note.
  • Maybe achieve Debian's build reproducibility requirements.
  • Better reporting of out of date SSL libraries.

New Features
Ctrl-Backspace now removes word to the left.
Triple Click now selects the sentence.

The Linux Packages without a widget set (ie Qt5, Qt6) are GKT2, once the default.

Note : Github likes to hide some of the download files. Please click the word "Assets" immediately below here and, perhaps "Show all assets" below the list of download files if you don't see the one you want.

tomboy-ng Release 0.42

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 14 Jan 06:52

This page contains the downloadable files for a binary install on Linux, Windows and Mac

Unless you know exactly what you need, you are far better off downloading the same release files from the Wiki Release Page

If you are feeling brave, there is a beta release with a few bug fixes, a gtk3 version and an experimental new Sync model, Misty, that should be significantly easier to setup for many people https://github.com/tomboy-notes/tomboy-ng/releases.

Release Notes

Note that the MacOS release has been updated to fix a bug that resulted in a double space on every press of the space key. 23rd April, 2025. The dmg file has the letter 'a' appended to its version number.
New Features

  • Allow --disableaccurateform switch for RasPiOS, this will prevent a small, non-responsive window appearing when you start tomboy-ng. Why ? Ask the RasPiOS developers.
  • Tab key now creates Bullet or extends an existing Bullet (or extends an existing Indent).
  • Shift-Tab to reduce Bullet or Indent.
  • Ctrl-Tab to create Indent (but only one paragraph at a time).
  • Indent now more compatible with original Tomboy. You can now open an note from the old Tomboy and indents at the start of a paragraph will appear as intended. However, indents (ie tabs) in the middle of a paragraph will not, eg, create columns of text.
  • Github Sync now allows tokens without an expiry date.
  • CLI option, -c, to create new note, eg with Operating System Hot Key.
  • Linux Qt5 and Qt6 packages require their respective libQtxPas libraries. Most older Linux distributions have out of date versions of these libraries, the known exceptions being Ubuntu 24.04, 24.10, Debian Trixie, Fedora 41+ and up to date Arch based systems. See below for where to get current libraries -

https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt5pas/releases
https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt6pas/releases

AppImage (Linux)
I now provide two AppImage files that can be downloaded directly, marked as executable and, possibly run directly without any further install. There are a few things to note -

  • Will work on Linux Distros as old as Ubuntu 20.04. The Qt5 version will work in Debian Bullseye but not the Qt6 version.
  • Like all AppImages, the download will need to be marked executable, the download process removes that attribute.
    $>chmod u+x tomboy-ng--x86_64-Qt5.AppImage <enter>
  • These packages were built on an Ubuntu 20.04 system (and therefore contains libraries from U20.04) and are not guaranteed to work on significantly older systems. I note the the Qt5 version works fine on Debian 11 Bullseye but the Qt6 one does not.
  • Both packages are around 35Meg
  • On newer Ubuntu systems, the app may fail to start with a message mentioning fuse, a library to allow user level file system mounting. (Ubuntu of course have their own bundling system, Snaps.) The necessary library is easily added
    $>sudo apt install install libfuse2t64
  • Argon (and reportedly other OpenSUSE systems) also need fuse, install with
$> sudo zypper install fuse libfuse2
  • Your feedback about the use of AppImage would be appreciated.

Note 1 : The pacman package is, of necessity, built on a system that used glibc v2.36 or later and the binary will not work on systems running glibc less than v2.34. In a pacman world I expect this not to be a problem but if I'm wrong, please let me know. Further, for the first two days of 0.42 release, the gtk file contained a Qt6 package. If you want the gtk2 version, please download tomboy-ng-0.42-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst noting the '-2' after the 0.42 version number. Sorry about that.

Note 2 For several days, the Windows install package was left out of here, its there now, my apologies !

Note 3 : Github likes to hide some of the download files. Please click the word "Assets" immediately below here and, perhaps "Show all assets" below the list of download files if you don't see the one you want.

tomboy-ng Beta Release 0.41a

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 01 Jan 06:10

Not a lot of changes from v0.41 but may be important to some users.

  • A bug was found in the (then) very immature Indent feature, an AV if you tried to remove the indent from the end of the line. Thats fixed and some other Indent/Bullet aspects cleaned up.
  • tomboy-ng now conforms to some degree with the original Tomboy wrt indents, it will indent when opening a legacy Tomboy file with Tabs at the start of a line.
  • Its now possible to use Github Sync with a token that does not have an expiry date. Not recommended but it does work now.
  • You can tell tomboy-ng to create a new note with "tomboy-ng -c" command. Useful if you setup a hot key at operating system level.
  • Bullets and Indents, both multilevel, can be controlled with the Tab key -
    • Tab - will insert a bullet or extend an existing bullet or indent
    • Control Tab - will insert an indent or extend an existing bullet or indent.
    • Shift Tab - will reduce an existing Tab or Bullet.
    • Alt Arrow (either left or right) will still also control bullets as per original Tomboy.

This is very much a beta release but it does fix a potential crash so I recommend upgrading but with care. And the usual implied responsibility to report any problem.

Not all platforms are available in this beta release currently, if you need an additional platform, please let me know and I will see what I can do.

Important - This release fixes what might be a dangerous bug. On some systems, closing tomboy-ng with multiple notes open can result in unsaved content not always being saved. I suggest all users should consider installing this release to prevent this issue causing loss of data.

New - AppImage downloads. (Linux only)**

  • These packages were built on an Ubuntu 20.04 system (and therefore contains libraries from U20.04) and are not guaranteed to work on significently older systems. Indeed, I note the the Qt5 version works fine on Debian 11 Bullseye but the Qt6 one does not.
  • Both packages are around 35Meg
  • On newer Ubuntu systems, the app may fail to start with a message mentioning fuse, a library to allow user level file system mounting. (Ubuntu of course have their own bundling system, Snaps.) The necessary library is easily added

Release Notes

New Features

  • Search using Title only or full note content (Search Form, Options).
  • Improved flexibility when making PDF, particularly significant for Chinese text users.
  • Address bug report #312 that could cause a crash if a note was deleted, within a notebook, if no content had been added.
  • Address feature request #313 - the original Tomboy allowed deleting multiple notes from the Search window. Its now possible to open or delete multiple notes and to manage a note's notebook membership from that Search window on tomboy-ng.
  • Linux Qt5 and Qt6 packages require their respective libQtxPas libraries. Most older Linux distributions have out of date versions of these libraries, the known exceptions being Ubuntu 24.04, Debian Trixie, Fedora 41 and up to date Arch based systems. @davidbannon davidbannon released this 21 Oct 09:10

This page contains the downloadable Beta Release files for a binary install on Linux, Windows and Mac

Unless you know what you need, you may be better off downloading a slightly earlier release, v0.40, from the Wiki Release Page

New in 0.40b - Fix what might be a dangerous bug. On some systems, closing tomboy-ng with multiple notes open can result in unsaved content not always being saved. I suggest all users should consider installing this beta to prevent this issue causing loss of data.

New - AppImage downloads. (Linux only) Possibly more useful Appimages in 0.40b, will now work on Linux Distros as old as Ubuntu 20.04. The Qt5 version will work in Debian Bullseye but not the Qt6 version.

  • Argon (and reportedly other OpenSUSE systems) also need fuse, install with
$> sudo zypper install fuse libfuse2
  • Some Gnome based systems will still fail to display a System Tray icon, tomboy-ng detects this and tells you how to fix it.
  • Your feedback about the use of AppImage would be appreciated.

Release Notes

  • These files contain an mature release.
  • Search using Title only or full note content (Search Form, Options).
  • Improved flexibility when making PDF, particularly significant for Chinese text users.

  • Not all packages for all platforms are available in a beta release. Sorry about that. If you would particularly like to try this beta release and the package you need is not present, please let me know and I'll probably be able to build one for you.
  • Linux Qt5 and Qt6 packages require their respective libQtxPas libraries. Most linux distributions have out of date versions of these libraries, the known exceptions being Ubuntu 24.04, Debian Trixie and up to date Arch based systems. See below for where to get current libraries -

tomboy-ng v0.40

Choose a tag to compare

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 21 Jun 01:33

This page contains the downloadable files for a binary install on Linux, Windows and Mac

Unless you know exactly what you need, you are far better off downloading the same release files from the Wiki Release Page or, Beta Release v0.4b that fixes an important bug (and a few obscure ones). I suggest it might be a good idea to look at https://github.com/tomboy-notes/tomboy-ng/releases/tag/v0.40b

Additionally, v0.40b has a new right-click menu on the search list allowing selection of multiple notes to open or delete. It has a new packaging model, AppImage for, at this stage, Linux x86_64 only.

Release Notes

  • New - File Links, much the same way that you can embed a link to a web site, you can now embed a link to a file or directory on your local computer. Maybe a link to an image or PDF document for example. Syntax is just a URL, eg file://Pictures/myphoto.jpeg - any file your operating system knows how to open. You can press Alt-F or Alt-D to get a dialog to select a File or Directory. Or use the menus.
  • Support for OpenSSL3.
  • Improved PDF export.
  • Linux - Qt5 and Qt6 will require new libQt5Pas or libQt6Pas libraries unless you are using newly released OS such as Debian Trixie or Ubuntu24.04 which have current libQt5Pas (no one seems to have libQt6Pas yet). See below.
  • Linux Qt5 version now prefers use of libxcb rather than Wayland. This is mainly due to incomplete features in Wayland itself. Its expected that when Wayland complies with its own spec, this constraint can be removed. While the default install ensure this is automatic (using a "desktop" file), if you start tomboy-ng from the command line you MUST add -platform xcb or use a launcher that observes the desktop file, eg gtk-launch tomboy-ng .
  • Linux Gnome systems, fixes to try and make usable under Wayland despite its missing features.
  • Linux altered command line switch that attempt to work around deficiencies in Wayland, --allow-leftclick; --useappind=yes|no

Qt5 and Qt6 users probably MUST install a new libqt5pas1 or libqt6pas6 library, your distro version is almost certainly not suitable yet. Get the new libraries from the links below and install them before or at the same time as you install tomboy-ng

https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt5pas/releases
https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt6pas/releases

Note 1 : The pacman package is, of necessity, built on a system that used glibc v2.36 and the binary will not work on systems running glibc less than v2.34. In a pacman world I expect this not to be a problem but if I'm wrong, please let me know.

Note 2 : There are two pacman *.zst files here with very similar names. The one with "-1" after the version number is gtk2 based, the one with "-2" is Qt6 based. I recommend the Qt6 one.

New Since v0.36c

  • All except Pacman package built with Lazarus 3.0.
  • Qt5 and Qt6 now use native dialogs. But must use new libqt5pas or libqt6pas libraries.
  • Auto Sync now runs in background thread.
  • User Selectable Auto Sync Timing.

@davidbannon davidbannon released this 16 Dec 01:12

Unless you know exactly what you need, you are far better off downloading the release files from the Wiki Release Page

WARNING - this directory contains beta releases of tomboy-ng, right now, probably exactly what you will get with v0.37. It is tagged v0.36i - 'i' for "Is this OK ?" ! From 'h', fixes affecting 32bit linux, word "Bullet" in menu, do not let Shift-Enter get through to KMemo, tighten up dependencies on NEW LibQt5/6Pas, do not move selindex while locked. Earlier fixes include new way to set sync timing, it can copy in plain text and ctrl-shift-Z will also undo. Syncing is now done as a background process so no more unresponsive few seconds while auto syncing. Linux KDE user will notice that they now must use the right click on the tray icon to popup a menu. The 'g' version has some small bug fixes on the 'f' version. The 'h' has a some tweaks for 32bit Linux and pre-translation finalized.

I do not expect to make any changes between here and release (except for i18n).

Qt5 and Qt6 users MUST install a new libqt5pas1 or libqt6pas6 libraries, your distro version is almost certainly not suitable any more. Get the new libraries from the links below and install them before or at the same time as you install tomboy-ng

https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt5pas/releases
https://github.com/davidbannon/libqt6pas/releases

Mac Users - the v0.36g beta for Mac now supports (hopefully) the Apple Silicon, M1 or ARM chip machines with a native code binary (as well as the Intel binary) for the first time, it has 'UNI' (Universal) at the end if the filename. I have built and packaged, tested on x86_64 but not Apple Silicon as I don't have a new Mac. Please try it out and let me know what you find.

As with any beta, if you use it and a have a problem, you should feel obligated to report that problem. Please !

I am sorry just how hard its becoming to find the file you want here !

Some release notes -

  • Linux 32bit should use Qt5 version, the gtk2 version may have problems with TrayIcon menu. Libayatana seems broken on 32bit.
  • Linux Gnome users should use either the Qt5 (recommended) or the Qt6 (few less messages to console if you use Wayland). The gtk2 version is slower and might have problems with the TrayIcon menu.
  • Linux KDE users need to use the right mouse button, seems the left click does now work with all Wayland backed systems. I imagine this problem will go away in time.
  • Note there is now a Qt6 x86_64 rpm
  • Most users will want the x86_64 (rpm) or amd64 (deb) versions.
  • Ones with an arch setting of arm64 are for eg 64bit Raspberry Pi, armhf is for 32bit Raspberry Pi and i386 or i686 are for older 32bit Intel hardware,
  • Please, please note, if you use the QT5 or Qt6 versions, you must put a new libqt5/6Pas library in place. It will not work otherwise. Its an easy install. Hopefully, in a year or so, the distros will catch up with libqt5pas and libqt6pas and this will not be necessary. But it is necessary now.

You may need to expand the 'Assets' by clicking the small black triangle below.
