The CMakeLists.txt file describes the uncompressed codec as experimental and off by default:
option(WITH_UNCOMPRESSED_CODEC" Support internal ISO/IEC 23001-17 uncompressed codec (experimental) "OFF)
I want to open-source viewers like GIMP to display uncompressed HEIFs. See GitLab Issue #10336 from 3 years ago where we wanted to give the uncompressed codec time to become stable.
Is the uncompressed codec mature enough to remove the 'experimental' warnings? Can we turn it on by default?
Yes, that "(experimental)" text is a leftover and should be removed.
What is ultimately enabled is decided by the package builders, but I think we can enable it by default since it does not pull in any additional dependencies (optionally zlib, brotli) and is not that large. Since there is also no way to separate it into a plugin, I think enabling it would be the right move.
