error opening zed: No GPU adapter found that can configure the display surface #394
I hit the same error. Zed needs Vulkan, and the VM doesn't have a Vulkan driver for the GPU yet. The VM's graphics (VirGL) only offer OpenGL ES 3.0.
Zed falls back to OpenGL, but it asks for compute shader support that OpenGL ES 3.0 doesn't have. No adapter passes, so it stops with "No GPU adapter found that can configure the display surface". You can see this in ~/.local/share/zed/logs/Zed.log:
Adapter virgl (...) (Gl) failed: Failed to create wgpu device: Limit 'max_compute_workgroups_per_dimension' value 65535 is better than allowed 0
The manual lists this as a known limitation in Omarchy on a Mac.
Workaround
Install Mesa's software Vulkan driver:
sudo pacman -S vulkan-swrast
Zed then starts using llvmpipe, which renders on the CPU. This works for me with Zed 1.24.2. At launch Zed shows an "Unsupported GPU" warning; click Skip. To hide the warning, start it with ZED_ALLOW_EMULATED_GPU=1 zed.
Zed is slower this way than on a real GPU. The driver is also available to every other app. If another app gets slower or draws incorrectly, remove the driver with sudo pacman -Rs vulkan-swrast.
Possible fixes
The project's backlog names Venus, which would bring Vulkan to the VM, as the real fix. Zed could also make this work on its own side. It already has a renderer without compute shaders, but it only uses it in the browser build. Using it on desktop OpenGL too would let Zed run on VirGL.

Thanks @simoz. Any idea when the team will be getting to this on the backlog?

I'm trying https://github.com/riftvm/riftvm. see:

@texastoland did it work for you?
