…eaderWorkerSet The pod-index-offset annotation is written by integration webhooks and read by the TAS topology ungater, but nothing validated its contract. An unparseable value or a value coexisting with podset-group-name was silently accepted and then wedged the ungater on every reconcile, and the value the MPIJob mutating webhook writes on CREATE could be stripped or changed on a later UPDATE without objection, breaking Worker rank-ordering. Add validation to the shared ValidateTASPodSetRequest helper so both MPIJob and LeaderWorkerSet reject a pod-index-offset that is set alongside podset-group-name or that is not a non-negative integer, enforced on CREATE and UPDATE. Also guard the MPIJob Worker offset against removal or modification on UPDATE, since the MPIJob mutating webhook only runs on CREATE. Signed-off-by: adibmbrk <adibmbrk@gmail.com>

Thanks for picking this one up.
The create-time part looks good to me. I have one question on the update check.
If a MPIJob already have a bad offset today, say pod-index-offset: invalid, I think after this PR nobody can fix it:
- keep
invalid, the new format check say it must be non-negative integer - delete the annotation,
ValidateImmutableFieldsay it is immutable - change it to
"1", also immutable
So every way is rejected. ValidateUpdate runs validateCommon(newMpiJob) and the immutable check in the same request, so both apply together.
Grouped Worker that already carry a number has the same problem, that is case 2 in #14475. Keep it fails the coexistence check, remove it fails the immutable check.
Maybe we don't make the raw string immutable, but check the new object is the state the mutating webhook would write? Then invalid -> "1" is allowed and "1" -> absent is not. The mutator already decides this from launcher, worker and runLauncherAsWorker, so the validator can ask the same question and the two stay in sync.
Written in part with the assistance of generative AI. I read the code path myself.
ValidateUpdate compared the Worker's pod-index-offset against the old value, so an object already in a bad state (unparseable, or left over after podset-group-name was added) could never be corrected: every transition either failed the coexistence/format check or the strict immutability check. Validate against the value the defaulting webhook would compute for the object right now instead, falling back to plain immutability only when the webhook does not manage the annotation for it. This keeps the mutator and validator in sync by construction and allows a bad legacy value to self-heal, while still rejecting tampering.

Good catch @thc1006, you're right, comparing against the old value meant a legacy bad state (invalid format, or a leftover offset once podset-group-name is added) could never be fixed on update. Went with your suggested direction: validate the new value against what the defaulting webhook would compute right now (same conditions it uses), instead of against the old value. That lets a bad legacy value self-heal while still rejecting tampering, and keeps the mutator/validator in sync by construction. Falls back to plain immutability when the mutator doesn't manage the annotation for that object at all, so existing coverage there is unchanged. Pushed in 813c8f0 with new tests for the self-heal and still-rejected paths. (Note: written with AI assistance, per the repo's AI contribution policy.) |

Gentle nudge on this TAS annotation enforcement fix. would appreciate a review when you get a chance @mimowo @sohankunkerkar @tenzen-y |
- Remove standalone TestValidatePodIndexOffsetAnnotation (unit test for an unexported function) and fold its scenarios into TestValidateSliceRequiredTopologyConstraintsAnnotation, which already exercises the same exported ValidateTASPodSetRequest entrypoint. - Drop immutability enforcement for the worker pod-index-offset annotation when it is not managed by the defaulting webhook (i.e. RunLauncherAsWorker unset), deferring that behavior to a follow-up PR so MPIJob can still be updated while suspended. - Convert TestValidateUpdate's table to a name-keyed map to avoid co-dependent test cases, and inline the baseJob builder closure to match the rest of the file's style. - Assert ValidateUpdate's admission.Warnings return value explicitly instead of discarding it. What this PR does / why we need it:
The
kueue.x-k8s.io/pod-index-offsetannotation is written by the integrationwebhooks and read by the TAS topology ungater to map Pod indexes to topology
assignments. Its documented contract (
site/data/labels_and_annotations.yaml) isthat it must be absent when
kueue.x-k8s.io/podset-group-nameis set (offsetmanagement is delegated to the PodSet group mechanism), and — implicitly — that its
value must be parseable, since the ungater reads it with
strconv.Atoiand hard-failson an unparseable value.
Nothing enforced either half for MPIJob or LeaderWorkerSet:
integrations) never inspected the annotation, so:
pod-index-offset: "invalid"was accepted, then theungater failed to parse it on every reconcile and left the Pods gated until the
object was hand-edited;
applied both the group-derived offset and the annotation (double-application).
verbs=createonly, so the"1"itwrites on CREATE could be removed or changed on a later UPDATE without objection,
reintroducing the Worker rank-ordering defect the offset was added to fix.
This PR enforces the contract at admission:
validatePodIndexOffsetAnnotationcheck in the sharedjobframework.ValidateTASPodSetRequesthelper — used by both the MPIJob andLeaderWorkerSet webhooks on CREATE and UPDATE — rejects a
pod-index-offsetthat isset alongside
podset-group-name(Forbidden) or whose value is not a non-negativeinteger (
Invalid). This resolves scenarios 1 and 2 for both integrations.ValidateUpdatenow guards the Worker'spod-index-offsetagainstremoval or modification (
apivalidation.ValidateImmutableField, gated on theTopologyAwareSchedulingfeature), closing the CREATE-only mutating-webhook gap(scenario 3). LeaderWorkerSet already re-reconciles the annotation on update via its
create;updatemutating webhook, so it needs no equivalent update guard. No webhook
verbsmarkers changed, so generated manifests are unaffected.Known limitation (left out of scope): adding TAS annotations to an MPIJob for the first
time via UPDATE will not inject the offset, because the mutator stays create-only. An
MPIJob spec is effectively immutable while managed, so this is not the reported defect.

Fixes #14475
Special notes for your reviewer:
The enforcement is deliberately shared. Per the issue's suggestion to decide the shape
"for both rather than as an MPIJob-local check", the value/coexistence validation lives
in
ValidateTASPodSetRequest, so MPIJob and LeaderWorkerSet get identical behavior. Thescenario-3 update guard is MPIJob-only because LeaderWorkerSet's mutating webhook already
runs on update.
