zstd: account for raw and RLE blocks in maxSyncLen - #1211
Conversation
maxSyncLen bounds how much of the frame is still to come, and decodeSyncSimple compares it with the output buffer's slack to decide whether the extended 16-byte copies are safe. decodeCompressed subtracts each compressed block's output from it, but decodeBuf's raw and RLE cases did not. A frame that opened with incompressible data therefore overstated its remaining size for every block after the raw ones, the slack check failed, and the rest of the frame ran the bounds-exact "safe" decodeSync variant. Subtract those blocks' sizes too, landing on zero (the "no bound" value, which selects the conservative paths) if a block meets or exceeds the bound; runDecoder's frame-size checks reject the excess afterwards. On a Neoverse N1 (oracle), DecodeAll of 70 MB frames whose first 4 MiB is random data got 17%, 11% and 7% faster for match offsets in the 32 KB, 768 KB and 2 MB ranges, entirely from the fast copy variant being selected again. Frames without raw blocks are unaffected. The test walks an encoder-produced frame (raw blocks, then compressed) and a hand-built one (raw, then RLE) block by block with DecodeAll's buffer geometry and checks after each block that maxSyncLen equals the bytes still to produce; it fails on the first raw block without the fix. When
hist.decoders.nSeqs == 0,decodeCompressedappends the literals and returns without reducingmaxSyncLen. The sequence path accounts for its output afterdecodeSync, but a literals-only block can leavemaxSyncLenoverstated. Later sequence blocks may then use bounds-exact copies instead of the extended-copy optimization.if hist.decoders.nSeqs == 0 { b.dst = append(b.dst, hist.decoders.literals...) + hist.decoders.consumeSyncLen(len(hist.decoders.literals)) return nil }Add a deterministic literals-only compressed-block case to

A compressed block with no sequences returns from decodeCompressed before the bookkeeping that subtracts its output, so it left maxSyncLen overstated the same way raw and RLE blocks did. Subtract its literals as well, and add a hand-built raw-then-literals-only frame to the test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
maxSyncLenbounds how much of the frame the synchronous decoder (DecodeAll, or aReaderwith concurrency 1) may still produce.decodeSyncSimplecompares it with the output buffer's slack to decide whether the extended 16-byte copies are safe; otherwise every block runs the bounds-exact "safe"decodeSyncvariant.decodeCompressedsubtracts each compressed block's output from it, butdecodeBuf's raw and RLE cases never did. A frame that opens with incompressible data (stored as raw blocks) therefore overstates its remaining size for every block after them, the slack check fails, and the rest of the frame runs the safe variant.perfon a Neoverse N1 showed 78% ofDecodeAllinsidesequenceDecs_decodeSync_safe_arm64on such a frame.The bound can only be overstated, so this was never a correctness issue, just the slow copies being selected. The fix subtracts raw and RLE block sizes too, landing on zero (the existing "no bound" value, which selects the conservative paths) if a block meets or exceeds the bound;
runDecoder's frame-size checks reject the excess afterwards.Measurements

benchdecodercorpus never hit this (probe counted zero safe selections on a silesia subset).amd64 not measured yet; the selection logic is shared, so the same behavior is expected there.
Test
TestMaxSyncLenTracksEveryBlockTypewalks two frames block by block withDecodeAll's buffer geometry â an encoder-produced frame that opens with raw blocks then compressed ones, and a hand-built frame with a raw block then an RLE block (the encoder never emits RLE) â and asserts after every block thatmaxSyncLenequals the bytes still to produce. It fails on the first raw block without the fix.ðĪ Generated with Claude Code
