The main window opens with a delay after a while #2877

Description

@cmvizitiu

Describe the bug
After some period of time after pressing the shortcut key for opening the CopyQ window (to show the clipboard items listing) it takes between 2 to 3 seconds to display the CopyQ window.

To Reproduce
Install CopyQ. Assign shortcut from Plasma (Meta-V) (actual value makes no difference). First use the computer for some time to fill the history; after some time using the computer WITHOUT ENGAGING the CopyQ clipboard items listing window notice that pressing the shortcut to engage CopyQ results in a three seconds delay before displaying the window.

Expected behavior
CopyQ window should have been displayed instantaneous the same way it is displayed after two or three calls to CopyQ (or immediately after install)

Version, OS and Environment
CopyQ Clipboard Manager 9.0.0
Qt: 5.15.14
KNotifications: 5.116.0
Compiler: GCC
Arch: x86_64-little_endian-lp64
OS: Fedora Linux 40 (Workstation Edition)

Plasma on X11 running on Intel Core i9-12900K with both "E" and "P" cores but the problem manifests itself on other classic Intel architecture and the same Fedora configuration.

free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 62Gi 14Gi 27Gi 3.8Gi 25Gi 47Gi
Swap: 23Gi 0B 23Gi

Additional context
Definitely not a keyboard problem and not an issue with the "E"/"P" Intel Core architecture: it happens on completely different Intel systems too. The problem is actually difficult to reproduce because once you notice it, it disappears (almost like a "heisenbug") and the application window will appear immediately.

What can be said for sure is that it takes about two to five minutes of regular use of the computer without displaying the CopyQ window to then get between one and three delayed displays of the clipboard window. So it's not always that it's only the first "call" to the CopyQ window which has the delay, sometimes multiple attempts result in the same two or three seconds delay. Sometimes simply swapping between items fixes the problem and the CopyQ window appears instantaneously. I tried reducing the number of items in history from 200 to 100 and for a short period of time that appeared to solve the problem.

I would like to underline that the issue is strictly related to the display of the clipboard items window, using the regular copy/paste is never delayed. At times the regular clipboard and the X clipboard become messed up though in the sense that no matter what I put into the clipboard, SHIFT-INSERT will paste the same item (most likely to occur after an image copy). The only way out of that problem is to display the clipboard items, chose any other item than the current selected one (and which should have been pasted...) then select back the item you're interested in.

The time it took me to write and edit the paragraphs above (from "Additional Context" downwards) was enough to produce the problem ONCE. Took two seconds to display the window when I pressed Win-V but additional presses of the keyboard shortcut resulted in the immediate display of the window.

Tried deleting the images from clipboard, made no difference. Following an older bug report from 2020 I disabled the tray icon, it made no difference either. The only thing that is most likely to fix the issue for a few minutes, is interacting with the CopyQ window one way or another.

copyq log comes empty but the GUI Help options produces this:

Can you try CopyQ 9.1.0? I've fixed some context menu update problems.

OK, upgraded to 9.1.0. Sorry to have to report but, after what appeared to be a promising start the issue is back.

What I can confirm though is that on a freshly booted Fedora Linux the rate at which the issue appears is way lower. I mean in three hours after the update I've only noticed the issue twice. But, after several "computer sleep -> computer wake" cycles the problem re-appeared.

Will need more experimentation but it would seem as if heavy usage of am HTML rendering engine (either Gecko or the Chrome equivalent) to edit / work with complex JavaScript (e.g. this text editor here) would make the problem appear faster.

Before you ask: no, echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/compact_memory made no difference.

Hi, I had a similar problem, but read somewhere that using nVidia GPU might have to do with it.
    Are you using nVidia GPU?
What I did, as a experiment is that I disabled the Composing with Shift+Alt+F12 and CopyQ started behaving really fast.
So then, I went to System Settings -> Window Management -> Window Rules, added a new profile for CopyQ:

    • Window Class (Substring Match): copyq
    • Window Role (Exact Match): main
    • Block Composing (Force): Yes
      image

Now, I have Composing enabled, like always and CopyQ w/o composing, which makes it fast and responsive.
    Good luck!

    Hi, thanks for your suggestions.

Silly me, I thought I specified the GPU... apparently I didn't.

Right now I'm running on i9-12900K's native GPU (whatever that is) and in all cases where I've encountered the issue it was X11 on Intel GPUs. I will try your suggestion though, who knows.

I've tried this and indeed the CopyQ shows up instantly, no delay for the window to show up. However, now when closing the window by performing an action such as selecting what to paste, the whole screen flashes black and it seems to redraw everything. That's on X11, on wayland that doesn't seem to happen.

    me too.

    I am AMD GPU.

but I delete all log files, and all clip items, that is OK!

Thank you very much for reporting @cmvizitiu

Does this persist with CopyQ 13 or ulterior? If so, by “the context menu”, do you mean the tray menu?

It used to happen on MX Linux 23 (Debian 12) and now is still happening on MX Linux 25 (Debian 13).
I had nvidia before, now I have amd - no difference.

13.0.0 and now with a NVIDIA board (but no specific NVIDIA measures taken); I'll test on Intel boards as soon as I get a chance. You are right I should have been more specific: What I meant was the window which appears if you right-click on the icon in the system tray and choose "Show main window under mouse cursor".

OK so problem is very much here but I've just noticed a peculiar aspect (can't possibly say whether is new or it was there from the beginning) and I think it helps in debugging:

If you press META-V (the assigned key for "Show main window under mouse cursor") AND the mouse cursor is above a window's title bar, the delay will happen almost 100%. If the mouse cursor is somewhere else it's fair chance... one out of four or five calls you get a delay then three or four correct ones, just like in the original description above. It makes no difference whether the application is QT or GTK. It doesn't even matter whether it's the window in focus or not.

So, if I understand correctly, the delay happens when opening the main window?
It would help to clarify your reproduction steps.

Do you mean over (on) the title bar? If you really mean above, would you mind providing a screencast?

the delay will happen almost 100%. If the mouse cursor is somewhere else it's fair chance... one out of four or five calls you get a delay then three or four correct ones, just like in the original description above.

    Thank you
According to this ticket’s title, this happens after "a while" (about two to five minutes of regular use of the computer). Do you maintain that, or would you say the time needed to reproduce is highly proportional to the number of times you open the main window (i.e., you would reproduce in less than 1 minute if you open/close the main window continuously)?

If I understand correctly, I find your process a little unusual. Are you aware that you can set a keyboard shortcut for the "Show main window under mouse cursor" command?

Can you provide a new extract of your CopyQ logs while specifying at which time(s) (at least which minute) the bug occurred?

I recorded also the keyboard sound so that you can see and hear the delay between the keyboard shortcut and the window reaction.

I know I can set a shortcut for that, as I wrote I'm using META-V (the "Win" key)

As for the usage pattern: it's about renaming some stupid files based on various criteria... I've tried everything and eventually got back to simply using the keyboard and the clipboard.

OK, I'd better give up on trying to predict the bug's behavior: the only predictable thing is that following a fresh start I've got hours of work before delay starts creeping in. Then it's pure luck it would seem.

Note that these videos use the Opus codec, which Firefox < 147 does not support. VLC and Chromium can play fine.

    Ah, I had misunderstood. Apologies
I could not reproduce this with ~50 attempts using Ctrl+Shift+Backspace on 2 PCs, both running 13.0.0-101-gb8b0493e on Windows 11 25H2.

If audio is properly synced with video, it sounds like the delay is more 1 s than 2 to 3 s. Is that correct? Could it be that the delay gradually increases over time?

Does this happen if you use “Show/hide main window” (instead of "Show main window under mouse cursor")?

If you've been using that windows for a long period of time (days...) with multiple resumes from sleep then it looks like Linux specific. I wonder if a virtual machine would be of any help.

If audio is properly synced with video, it sounds like the delay is more 1 s than 2 to 3 s. Is that correct?

I watched the videos again: the audio is properly synced and it confirms my original description of the bug which was "2 to 3s delay".

Note that the longer video manages to catch the really annoying irregular manifestation of the bug: some times CopyQ works as it should sometimes you get a delay (in that case depending on the cursor position on the screen but it's not a definite rule).

Could it be that the delay gradually increases over time?

The delay doesn't increase over time: when it first happens it's the same 2 to 3s delay from the beginning. What increases over time is the number of delays: freshly booted not delay occurrences, CopyQ works as it should; many hours (if not days) of work later and especially one or two resumes from sleep? Increased number of delays.

Does this happen if you use “Show/hide main window” (instead of "Show main window under mouse cursor")?

Lemme get back to you on this.

    Hello there,

    Fedora 44 now

    KNotifications: 6.26.0
    KStatusNotifierItem: 6.26.0
OS: Fedora Linux 44 (Workstation Edition)
    QCA: 2.3.10
    Qt: 6.11.1
    QtKeychain: 0.15.0
    XDG_SESSION_TYPE: unspecified
    has-audio: 1
    has-encryption: 1
    has-global-shortcuts: 1
    has-keychain: 1
    has-mouse-selection: 1

... and the issue is very much with us UNLESS I enable Close When Unfocused. With that option enabled the issue still manifests itself but in all due honesty a) the delay is significantly smaller and b) it seldomly happens (you have to specifically look for it).

I learned to live with Close When Unfocused so I'm happy with the current status.

    Thank you once again @cmvizitiu

I recommend investigating bug #3634 before this one. Regardless of each bug’s importance, #3634 seems easier to debug. I am confident that solving #3634 will either fix this one or provide key understanding to identify this one’s cause(s).

Does this sometimes happen when opening only the tray menu?

As far as I can tell, no: tray meny seems to work normally.

Can you reproduce this by running $ copyq show; ?

Now this was a darn fine question. Sorry that I only now spotted it in the thread.

@Chealer I can confirm that opening a shell (QTerminal 2.4.0) and issuing copyq show seems to be sure way to reproduce the bug. Hmm...

I can confirm my observation from #3634 namely that the CopyQ icon appears immediately after pressing Enter on copyq show but the main window will only appear after the known delay.

Also noticed that the Close When Unfocused option can be fooled by repeatedly issuing copyq show. At one point the main window will simply remain visible no matter what and only a click on another of the open windows will make it disappear.

Oh, that was unexpected. Thank you very much again

Can you confirm that this scenario (or these scenarios), i.e. the delay occurring from the first time copyq show is called, only occurs if the Close When Unfocused option is disabled?

I can confirm my observation from #3634 namely that the CopyQ icon appears immediately after pressing Enter on copyq show but the main window will only appear after the known delay.

But the command returns before the delay (before the window displays), right?

Do you have by any chance any desktop environment other than KDE Plasma (like GNOME or Xfce) installed on the affected PC?

Sorry, I was supposed to report back took longer than expected but I would have to retract some of the things that I wrote above, the bug is still here with version 16.0.0 from Fedora RPM.

After some digging I figured out why I mistakenly reported

the issue is very much with us UNLESS I enable Close When Unfocused. With that option enabled the issue still manifests itself but in all due honesty a) the delay is significantly smaller and b) it seldomly happens (you have to specifically look for it).

Unfortunately, I'm battling another bug (at random, pressing the power button performs a power down instead of suspend) so my system has been rebooted way more often than usual (instead of suspend/resume). As I already wrote, in my normal usage the bug doesn't show up on a freshly booted system, only after some usage.

As for other environments I'll try and get hold of an XFCE install.

If I understand correctly, on your affected install, with KDE Plasma, the issue reproduces reliably when invoking $ copyq show;, even when the Close When Unfocused preference is enabled?

    Yes!

More to the point: freshly booted KDE Plasma system, everything works as it should follow the steps ending in "close the window by having it defocused" (but without any other interaction I might add? Gotta test this one too); Problem shows immediately for me.

So it could very well be that for me it works after a reboot because I only later simply make the mistake of calling the main window and never interact with that particular instance of it?

In normal usage I invoke the CopyQ window because I need something from it (most likely a bypass of the ugly X clipboard bug) so I somehow interact with it using the keyboard (cursor keys then Enter or ESC).

Lemme find the time to confirm (or not...) this particular aspect.

Apologies if I am reading this too quickly or misunderstanding, but based on your last message, are you confident this differs from issue #3634 then?

  28. cmvizitiu commented on Sep 8, 2026

No, most likely is the same issue but I wanted to clear this annoying aspect of "works for me after a fresh boot".

I just tested with a freshly booted Fedora 44 and UNLESS we defocus the window indirectly as described in #3634 the problem doesn't appear.

My typical usage pattern is invoke via kbd -> do something -> dismiss with ESC. At one point though I probably forget to dismiss the window with ESC and I'm pretty sure that's why the bug shows later for me.

Having only one application window open and CopyQ I couldn't help but notice another aspect: have the application window occupy a good part of the desktop and make copyq window open slightly overlapped; move the mouse away from copyq and defocus it by clicking on the application window. You will see the copyq window getting behind the (now focused) application window BUT the copyq window will not disappear immediately (as in pressing ESC). Maybe I'm seeing things but to my eye this window closing delay looks suspiciously close to the opening delay.

Just for fun I also tested with LXQT and, predictably enough, there are no problems.
