When I try to install it from repositories, the following issues appear:
error: can't copy 'data/terminator.desktop': doesn't exist or not a regular file
error: can't copy 'data/terminator.metainfo.xml': doesn't exist or not a regular file
To solve it I need to do the following:
cd data/terminator.desktop.in data/terminator.desktop
cp data/terminator.appdata.xml.in data/terminator.metainfo.xml
You need to run python setup.py build first.
Also, you should run python3 setup.py install --single-version-externally-managed --record=install-files.txt otherwise a bunch of assets won't get copied properly.
I re-installed as you said, but now I can't run terminator:

Came here having what appears to be the same problem as OP, on debian testing. I "solved" it by removing every file and directory in my local install path named something related to terminator, and re-installing. Problem gone.
I expect this won't happen often, and perhaps only if you keep building from git and having python upgraded etc. Decided to post my "solution" since this will show up when someone searches for the error message.

What repositories are you trying to install from?
dragonxtek commentedon Oct 13, 2020
I did the following:
git clone https://github.com/gnome-terminator/terminator.git
cd terminator
sudo python3 setup.py install

I re-installed as you said, but now I can't run terminator:

Hmm, what distro/OS are you using? can you upgrade it to python 3.8 easily?
mattrose commentedon Oct 13, 2020
Also, try changing to a different directory before running terminator. There were a lot of weird bugs with setuptools in 3.6 I think

closing for lack of feedback, please feel free to re-open.
