Renderer Efficiency #14030
|
A way I work now is to do a lot of experiments utilizing mostly AI. One of the experiments I recently undertook was Jetty a C/Swift terminal, parsing side based mostly on libghostty/ghostty but I explored a decidedly different rendering and draw path. It is clear that I gave up some features of Ghostty in this path, but it is approximately 2x as efficient in CPU & GPU usage. https://github.com/j-c-m/jetty/blob/master/docs/vs-ghostty.md https://github.com/j-c-m/jetty/blob/master/docs/jetty-cpu-gpu.md My goal is to port over, sometimes only partially, some of the anticipated wins to Ghostty to improve its effiency. For example reference #1 from jetty-cpu-gpu.md I've already partially implemented what I think is reasonable w/o altering Ghostty display preferences. https://github.com/ghostty-org/ghostty/compare/main...j-c-m:ghostty:renderer-opaque-cell-bg?expand=1 Even just this change has reduced GPU usage in a measurable amount in my testing. AI Disclosure: I use as much AI as I can, but less of it as I port over to Ghostty. |
