Make the first-run screen translatable, with a pseudo-locale test - #541
Conversation
Adds the i18n foundation on @wordpress/i18n: main resolves a catalog for the OS locale and the renderer loads it before the first render, a .pot is extracted with npm run i18n:pot, and --lang=en-XA runs a pseudo-locale that a new journey scans for any string that was not wrapped. Wraps the sidebar, the empty state, the feedback popover and the create site dialog. The rest of the UI follows in later PRs. See #540.

The i18n:locale bridge added api.getLocale without updating the list the packaged smoke test compares window.api against, so it failed on both platforms.

The extractor reads only string literals, so `__(`Static`)` passed the check and was left out of the POT.
…n other than being absent The i18n:locale handler no longer blocks the main process on a file read. A read error other than ENOENT, and a catalog whose messages are not a record, are now logged before falling back to the bare language.

Let's add all the entries that Openverse add to be sure to have the best POT possible. See https://github.com/WordPress/openverse/blob/main/frontend/i18n/scripts/generate-pot.mjs#L13-L26

Done in bc58758. The .pot now carries the full Openverse header set: Report-Msgid-Bugs-To, POT-Creation-Date, MIME-Version, Content-Transfer-Encoding, PO-Revision-Date, Last-Translator, Language-Team, plus the copyright comment. This also fixed Content-Type, which was missing its charset. There's a test covering every entry.
One difference from Openverse: their workflow only runs when en.json5 changes, so a fresh creation date on every run costs them nothing. Our strings are inline in src/, so when the publishing workflow lands it'll skip the commit if the creation date is the only thing that changed.

# Conflicts: # TESTING.md # package-lock.json # package.json # src/renderer/index.jsx
… their own (#567) ## Why `src/renderer/index.jsx` is 6,420 lines, and the redesign in #542 has to change almost all of it. Between its imports and the two components that are most of the file sat seven components that take props and nothing else, and five hooks. They can be changed one at a time once they are files of their own, and what is left in `index.jsx` afterwards is the part that still has to be taken apart. ## What changes The twelve move, verbatim, and `index.jsx` imports them back: - `src/renderer/components/`: `ReasonedButton`, `DiscardChangesLink`, `DiffText`, `LogText`, `Destination` and `DestinationGroup` (one file), `TerminalCommandLink`. - `src/renderer/hooks/`: `useDetectedEditors`, `useContributorProvenance`, `useNextActionCue`, `useSites`, and `useConfirmation` with `ConfirmationContext`. Nothing is rewritten. Each function gains `export`, each file gains the imports it needs, and five comments that pointed "above" or "below" now name the file they mean. `index.jsx` is 6,085 lines. Two things follow from there being more than one renderer source: - **`build.files` excludes every `.jsx` under `src/renderer/`**, where it excluded `index.jsx` alone. In that directory `.jsx` now means "bundled by esbuild", and without this the new files would ship uncompiled beside the bundle that already contains them. The hooks are named `.jsx` for that reason, although they hold no JSX. The packaged smoke test reads the same rule. - **The review standard and TESTING.md** said a decision made in `index.jsx` is one the suite cannot reach. That is as true of a component or a hook beside it, and they say so. Deliberately not in this PR: any change to what a component renders or a hook does, the five modals (#553), and `SiteRow`'s state (#554). ## How to test this Platforms: any. Use the Buildkite build for the current head of this branch. The journeys carry this: `npm run test:e2e`, from the repository root, drives every flow the moved components and hooks take part in. The packaged smoke test, after `npm run build:once && CSC_IDENTITY_AUTO_DISCOVERY=false npm run pack:dir`, proves the app boots from an archive without the sources: `npm run test:e2e:packaged`. It is red if `build.files` excludes only `index.jsx`; that was checked by putting the old pattern back. Nothing on screen should differ, so a manual pass is a look for what the journeys do not reach: **Starting state:** the app open on a site that has finished setup, with an edited file. 1. Hover a disabled button, for example "Unlink" while a command runs in the terminal. The tooltip with the reason appears. 2. Click "Review & submit changes". The diff is coloured, and the destinations are grouped in cards. 3. Start the dev server and open the "Logs" tabs. Log lines are coloured by severity. 4. Under the terminal, click one of the command links in the hints. The command is typed at the prompt and not run. 5. Click "Open directory in". The list of editors on this machine appears. **What must not have happened:** - No confirmation toast is missing after an action that shows one ("Updated to the latest trunk" after an update, "Patch saved to …" after saving a patch, "Local changes discarded." after a discard): they come through the context that moved. - The page still scrolls to the next step when it changes. ## Risks and limitations - **One journey failed once and could not be reproduced.** In the first full run after rebasing onto #541, "a failed review reports an error instead of claiming there are no changes" failed. It passed in the next two full runs, in 25 isolated repeats and in 4 repeats of its whole file. The failure output was not kept, so its cause is unknown; nothing the test exercises changed in this PR. - **`npm test` was not rerun on the last commit.** It changes two comments, the README and two smoke-test assertions. The unit suites ran on the commit before it. - ~~**Checked on macOS only.** Windows is covered by CI's journeys and packaged smoke.~~ Checked on Windows also - **The moved code keeps `index.jsx`'s two-space indentation**, where `.editorconfig` asks for tabs in new code, so that the diff reads as a move. `.editorconfig` steers editors and fails nothing. - Review: no findings; three style notes, applied. ## Related Closes #552 Part of #542. Follows #566. --- <details> <summary>Design decisions and alternatives considered</summary> **`hooks/` beside `components/`**, where the issue's title names `components/` for both. The step that splits `SiteRow`'s state (#554) will add a hook per domain, and they are not components. **Kebab-case file names**, like every other file under `src/`, rather than the `PascalCase.tsx` of the prototype. **One pattern, `!src/renderer/**/*.jsx`**, rather than a line per directory. A directory list has to be remembered the next time one is added; the extension is a rule a new file follows by being what it is. The `.cjs` modules beside them are not covered, deliberately: the main process requires some of them. **No rewrite on the way.** `formatEmailDate`, the style constants and the labels at the top of `index.jsx` stay where they are; they are not components, and moving them is not what the issue asks. </details> <details> <summary>Review outcome (required — see AGENTS.md)</summary> **0 [fix here] · 0 [follow-up]** — no findings across the five dimensions. The review checked the move mechanically: it stripped each new file's imports and `export`, found the rest as an exact substring of `trunk`'s `index.jsx`, and diffed what remained against the branch's. All eleven files are byte-identical to `trunk` apart from the comment edits. It also confirmed no circular import, one shared `ConfirmationContext`, an unchanged order of style registration, that the packaging pattern matches all twelve `.jsx` and nothing that must ship, and that the translation extraction script still sees the new files. Style notes, applied in the second commit: two comments in `index.jsx` still pointed at a note that had moved; the smoke test's directory checks were written through `arrayContaining` where `toContain` says it; the README named `index.jsx` alone as the bundle's source. Style notes, left alone as unrelated to this change: `.editorconfig` and `eslint.config.mjs` say `index.jsx` uses four spaces, and the review standard still says "4000-line component". - **Review:** completed — fresh agent context, local, before the PR existed, read-only; head 1ab1520 / base 1f3808a; committed work only, working tree clean; outcome above. CodeRabbit: not run yet. - **Since review:** `1ab1520 → 4c98b4c` checked. The difference is the three style notes. It was not reviewed again by a fresh context. Checks, macOS, local: | Check | On | Result | |---|---|---| | `eslint . --max-warnings=0` | 4c98b4c | clean (run with a local agent worktree under `.claude/worktrees/` ignored; it is not part of the repository) | | `npm test` | 1ab1520 | 1691 pass, 2 skipped, 0 fail | | `npm run test:electron` | 1ab1520 | 1693 pass, 0 fail | | `npm run test:e2e` | 4c98b4c | 34 of 34 pass | | `npm run test:e2e:packaged` | 4c98b4c | 15 of 15 pass | </details> <details> <summary>Implementation notes</summary> How the move was checked before the review: every line that left `index.jsx` was looked up in the new files. Of 335, all but eight are there unchanged; the eight are five import lines and three comments, each rewritten. `@wordpress/i18n`'s extraction (`scripts/generate-pot.cjs`, from #541) walks `src/` and picks up `.jsx`, so a string wrapped in a component later is found without a change there. </details> <details> <summary>Screenshots or recording</summary> Nothing on screen changed, and no images are attached. The twelve shots `npm run shots` captures were taken on `trunk` and on this branch with a two-second settle before each capture. Eleven are pixel-identical. The twelfth, `gutenberg-site-view`, differed once in its terminal, which is an intermittent rendering problem on `trunk` itself: eight captures of that shot on unchanged `trunk` code showed it twice, and eight on this branch not at all. It is being looked at separately. With the harness's own 300ms settle, one shot differs from `trunk` by 14 corner pixels of a sidebar entry: a transition caught part-way, which is why the comparison was repeated with a longer settle. </details> 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
## Why #541 made the app translatable, but nothing gets its strings to translators. This publishes the `.pot` where translate.wordpress.org can import it, so translators can start on `meta/contributor-toolkit`. Part of #540. Split out of #544, which now holds only the download of translations back into the app and is stacked on this. ## What changes - `.github/workflows/i18n-pot.yml` runs after every push to trunk that touches `src/` or `scripts/generate-pot.cjs`. It regenerates the `.pot` and commits it to an orphan `translations` branch, the fixed URL translate.wordpress.org imports from. Openverse publishes its strings the same way. - Two jobs: extraction runs npm packages with a read-only token, and a second job that runs nothing but Git holds the write token. - Both triggers (push and hand-started) publish from trunk only, so a run from a feature branch can't publish that branch's strings. - `CONTRIBUTING.md` says how strings reach translators. Deliberately **not** in this PR: downloading translations and shipping catalogs (#544). ## How to test this Platforms: any. Run from the repository root on this branch. 1. Run `npm run i18n:pot`. 2. `contributor-toolkit.pot` appears at the repository root, and its header has `Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8`. 3. `git status` shows nothing new: `*.pot` is ignored. **What must not have happened:** no `.pot` is committed to trunk by this PR. **Can't be tested before merge:** the workflow publishes from trunk only, by design, so its first run is the push that merges this. After merge, check the "Translatable strings" run under Actions, and that https://raw.githubusercontent.com/WordPress/contributor-toolkit/translations/contributor-toolkit.pot serves the file. ## Risks and limitations - **The import URL is unconfirmed.** [`meta/contributor-toolkit`](https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/meta/contributor-toolkit/) exists but has no strings yet, and its API doesn't show where it imports from. Worth confirming with the Meta team that it's the raw URL above. - **`@wordpress/components`' own strings** (such as a modal's Close button) aren't in this app's `.pot`. - Pre-PR review: this code was reviewed as part of #544; see below. ## Related Part of #540. Follows #541. #544 is stacked on this. --- <details> <summary>Design decisions and alternatives considered</summary> - **The `.pot` lives on an orphan branch, not trunk,** as Openverse does. …he app (#544) ## Why #541 made the app translatable, and #572 publishes its strings to translate.wordpress.org. Nothing brings the translations back. This PR downloads them into the app at release time, so a translation made there reaches contributors at the next release. Part of #540. Stacked on #572, which was split out of this PR. ## What changes - **Translations back:** `npm run i18n:download` writes a catalog to `src/languages/` for every locale at least 80% translated, removes ones that fell below, and prints a table for the release PR. Nothing in `src/languages/` changes unless every download succeeds. - **Locale names:** catalogs are named by translate.wordpress.org's lowercase slug (`pt-br`). The app maps Chromium's names onto them, including Filipino (`fil` to `tl`). - **Held back, and named in the table:** locales the app can never select (Electron only reports its own list), and right-to-left locales until the styles support them. The page already follows a catalog's text direction. - **Journeys run in `en-US`,** the source language, so a British English catalog never loads under them. Deliberately **not** in this PR: publishing the `.pot` (#572), right-to-left styling, a check that the release step ran (proposed in #543), a docs page for translators (it would link to a project that does not exist yet), and wrapping more of the UI. ## How to test this Platforms: any. Run everything from the repository root on this branch. **The download against our own project, before anything is translated** 1. Run `npm run i18n:download`. 2. It prints `No locale of meta/contributor-toolkit is at 80% yet.` The project exists but has no strings until #572's workflow first publishes the `.pot`. 3. `git status` shows no change under `src/languages/`. The script must not remove `src/languages/README.md`. **The download against real data** (Openverse, a live project with the same setup) 1. Run `node scripts/download-translations.cjs --project=openverse`. It can pause for a while if translate.wordpress.org throttles it. 2. It prints a table of about 23 locales, then **Not shipped:** listing `en-au`, `es-cl`, `nl-be` and others as "the app never selects this locale", and `fa` as "right-to-left". 3. `src/languages/` now holds `de.json`, `pt-br.json`, `tl.json` and the rest, with no `es-cl.json`, `en-au.json` or `fa.json`. 4. Clean up with `git clean -f src/languages` (only the downloaded files are untracked). **A catalog reaches the window** 1. Save this as `src/languages/de.json`: ```json { "locale_data": { "messages": { "": { "lang": "de" }, "No sites yet.": [ "Noch keine Websites." ] } } } ``` 2. Run `npx electron . --lang=de`. 3. The sidebar reads **Noch keine Websites.**, and in DevTools `<html>` has `lang="de"` and `dir="ltr"`. (Chromium reports `--lang=de-AT` as `de` too, so the `de-at` to `de` fallback can't be driven by hand; the unit tests cover it.) 4. Delete `src/languages/de.json`. **What must not have happened:** - `npm start` still shows English, with `<html lang="en">`. - The existing journeys still read English text. They run in `en-US` now, and none of them asserts on a date or number format. ## Risks and limitations - **[`meta/contributor-toolkit`](https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/meta/contributor-toolkit/) has no strings yet** until #572 merges and publishes the `.pot`. Until translators reach 80% in a locale, releases ship in English exactly as after #541. - **Variants such as German (formal) are not shipped.** The project has six (`de/formal`, `nl/formal`, `de-ch/informal`, `ca/valencia`, `pt/ao90`, `pt/informal`); the app has no way to pick one, so only default sets are read. - **Some fully translated languages can't load.** Electron only reports the 55 languages it ships (checked by a test), so Welsh, Galician, Lao and Albanian users get English even at 100%. `app.getPreferredSystemLanguages()` could reach them; that's a follow-up. - **Right-to-left locales wait for the styles**, which would need `@wordpress/components`' RTL stylesheet and the app's own left/right styles reworked. - **The release step is manual.** Forgetting `npm run i18n:download` ships old translations silently. #543 proposes documenting the release and a check. - Pre-PR review: 4 [fix here], all fixed; 2 [follow-up], one resolved by holding right-to-left locales back. ## Related Part of #540. Follows #541, now merged. Stacked on #572. Release docs: #543. --- <details> <summary>Design decisions and alternatives considered</summary> - **Commit catalogs at release, not download them at build time.** Builds stay reproducible, a translate.wordpress.org outage can't break a release, and the catalogs are reviewed in the version-bump PR. - **An 80% cut-off** keeps half-English screens off contributors' machines. One constant, `MIN_COVERAGE`. - **One request per locale, not the bulk zip.** The project API gives each locale's coverage, so the script asks only for the locales it will ship, needs no zip library, and stays under the throttle. It waits and retries on a 429. - **Hold back, don't ship, unselectable locales.** A catalog nothing can load only adds weight to the app. </details> <details> <summary>Review outcome (required — see AGENTS.md)</summary> 4 [fix here] · 2 [follow-up]. All 4 fixed; both follow-ups resolved or deferred. 1. An API answer in an unexpected shape was read as "nothing translated" and removed every catalog. It's now refused, and nothing changes. 2. A hand-started workflow run published whichever branch it ran on. Both triggers are now limited to trunk. 3. Locales the app can never select were shipped. They're now held back and named. 4. The uppercase-locale test couldn't fail on macOS or Windows, whose filesystems ignore case. It now asserts on the file names a locale tries. 5. Follow-up: an RTL catalog would have given a half-mirrored window. RTL locales are held back, and the styling is left for later. 6. Follow-up: tests for 1 and 3, added with the fixes. Also from the review's notes: `tl` was tried twice, a failed copy could half-update `src/languages/`, and a few stale comments and docs lines. All fixed. Found after the review, in a real-data dry run: translate.wordpress.org answered 429 partway through. The script now waits and retries. - **Review:** completed; separate-context Explore agent; reviewed `24d068d` against base `add/i18n-foundation` at `7f1462c`; outcome above. - **Split:** the `.pot` workflow and its docs moved to #572; finding 2 went with it. - **Since review:** `24d068d → bc2e78b`, the fixes above. Not re-reviewed by a fresh context. After them: `npm run lint` clean, `npm test` 1711 tests (1709 pass, 2 skipped). - **Journeys locally:** 34/34 with retries off, twice. Other full runs had one-off failures in different tests each time (`pr-checkout.spec.js:141`, `store-persistence.spec.js:63`), each passing 3–4 times alone, while the machine's load average was near 10. CI on this PR is the check that counts. - **CodeRabbit:** not yet requested. </details> <details> <summary>Implementation notes</summary> - `src/i18n.cjs`: `catalogCandidates(locale)` lists the slugs a locale tries; `reachableSlugs()` is every slug some Electron locale leads to; `ELECTRON_LOCALES` is checked against the installed Electron's `.lproj` (macOS) or `.pak` (Windows) list. - `src/renderer/locale-setup.cjs`: `textDirection(_x)` reads WordPress's `_x('ltr', 'text direction')` convention, which also puts that string in the `.pot`. - `scripts/make-pot.cjs` restates the `Content-Type` charset. Passing custom headers had replaced the plugin's defaults, leaving `text/plain;` with no encoding. That affected #541 too. </details> <details> <summary>Screenshots or recording</summary> Nothing on screen changes in English. Why
Every string in the app is hard-coded English, and Contributor Days happen all over the world. #540 makes the case. This is the first step: the plumbing and the tests, plus one wrapped screen to prove them. No languages ship yet.
What changes
@wordpress/i18n, the library@wordpress/componentsalready uses, so the components' own labels (the modal's Close button) translate through the same catalog.i18n:localehandler resolves a catalog fromsrc/languages/for the OS locale (exact match, then the bare language). .cjscopy modules, main's error messages, menus and dialog titles, dates, actual translations, and where translations come from. Those are follow-ups on #540.CONTRIBUTING.mdhas the rules for wrapping strings. How to test this
Platforms: any. The Buildkite build for this branch works; check it matches the current head.
Pseudo-locale. Starting state: a fresh profile with no sites. From the repo root after
npm install, runnpx electron . --lang=en-XA.[Çóñţŕíƀúţóŕ Ţóóļķíţ~~~~~~]. Every other string there is accented and bracketed the same way, including "No sites yet." and the Create a site button.@wordpress/componentsshares the catalog.English. Run
npm start(or open the Buildkite build normally). The same screens read exactly as they did on trunk. What must not have happened:
<html lang>saysen, not the OS language. There is no catalog for it yet, and a wronglangmakes a screen reader read English in the wrong voice. You can check this in DevTools.tests/e2e/journeys/i18n.spec.jsautomates steps 1 to 5: it scans each screen for visible text or labels that are not bracketed and names any it finds. Unwrapping "Site location" made it fail with that string.Risks and limitations
@wordpress/i18nat runtime (throughproject-type.cjs). It and its dependencies were already production packages at the same versions, and packaged smoke passes on macOS and Windows in CI.@wordpress/i18nto its ESM build. Without it, arequire()in a.cjsmodule gets a second i18n instance that the catalog never reaches. The journey catches this.Related

Design decisions and alternatives considered
@wordpress/i18nover i18next or a hand-rolled lookup. It's already in the tree, uses the gettext workflow WordPress translators know, andsetLocaleDatacovers@wordpress/components' strings.en-XAname rather than an app-specific env var:--langis already how the journeys pick a locale.__()at call time, never at module load. A module-level constant is evaluated before the locale loads and stays English, which is whyCREATE_SITE_TYPE_OPTIONSbecame a function and the project type descriptions became getters..potis generated, not committed, so it cannot drift. Converting.pointo catalogs waits until there's a translation to convert.Review outcome (required — see AGENTS.md)
