docs: migration directions for ElastiCache and managed sources - #572
Documents how BetterDB migration relates to AWS ElastiCache, node-based and Serverless, following AWS's 2026-10-21 launch of online migration into ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey. Docs only, no code.
Changes
docs/providers/aws-elasticache.md: new "Migrating to or from ElastiCache" section with a direction-by-mode table. AWS restricts PSYNC and SYNC on every ElastiCache cache, so redis_shake_sync only applies when ElastiCache is the target; a managed source gets redis_shake (DUMP/RESTORE) or command mode as a snapshot copy. Also describes what AWS's own tool does and does not accept, and how BetterDB on the source side complements an AWS-run migration.
docs/migration.md: "Managed providers" subsection under topology support with the same two constraints.
README.md: migration bullet widened to any-to-any, either direction, naming the providers.
Related: #568 (replication lag field), #569 (explicit cutover action), #570 (Serverless readiness checks). Website side: BetterDB-inc/website#44 for the comparison page and blog post.

Docs-only updates to README and migration/provider guides; no runtime, auth, or data-path code changes.
Overview Documentation-only expansion of live migration guidance for managed AWS ElastiCache and broader engine/topology coverage—no application code changes.
The README live-migration bullet now spells out supported directions (self-hosted and managed providers, standalone vs cluster rules), PSYNC-based cutover when replication is allowed, and a pointer to KeyDB/Dragonfly in the engine table.
docs/migration.md adds an Other engines matrix (Redis/Valkey versions, KeyDB, Dragonfly vs redis_shake_sync / redis_shake / command) and a Managed providers subsection: PSYNC/SYNC limits on sources, RDB version caveats for DUMP/RESTORE, and that execution/validation dial the cache host directly (agent and SSH tunnels are analysis/monitoring only).
docs/providers/aws-elasticache.md downgrades migration from fully supported to ⚠️, documents VPC/direct-reachability for execute/validate, a direction-by-mode table (node-based vs Serverless, including Serverless-as-source → command only), and how BetterDB compares to AWS’s October 2026 online migration into Serverless.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified supported Redis and Valkey deployment types and providers, including that cluster sources require cluster targets.
Documented engine-specific migration support and detection for Redis, Valkey, KeyDB, and Dragonfly; KeyDB and Dragonfly are not included in the test suite.
Explained when continuous replication is available, along with managed-service requirements for replication access and matching RDB versions.
Noted that execution and validation connect directly to cache hosts and ports; agent and SSH-tunnel connections do not provide this access.
Added ElastiCache guidance on supported migration modes, AWS replication-command restrictions, and online migration-tool limitations.
Describe migration to and from ElastiCache node-based and Serverless caches
in the provider guide, including which execution modes apply now that AWS
restricts PSYNC and SYNC on every ElastiCache cache, and how BetterDB
relates to AWS's own online migration into Serverless.
Add a managed-providers note to docs/migration.md and widen the README
migration line to cover any-to-any, either-direction migrations.
The README and migration guides describe supported engines, migration modes, managed-service constraints, ElastiCache connectivity, and the stated scope of AWS’s online migration tool.

Summary
Migration scope and managed-provider guidance README.md, docs/migration.md
The README lists supported platforms and deployment types, cluster-target requirements, and PSYNC-based continuous replication when permitted by the source. The migration guide adds engine support details and describes managed-service mode and direct connectivity requirements.
The guide documents direct connectivity requirements, supported migration modes by direction and cache type, and constraints for ElastiCache sources and targets. It also describes AWS’s online migration tool and related monitoring details.
BetterDB-inc/monitor#573 — The migration guide documents the direct host-and-port behavior and SSH-tunnel limitation described by this issue. The PR documents the limitation but does not implement tunnel routing.
Possibly related PRs
BetterDB-inc/monitor#574 — This PR changes migration behavior for enabled SSH tunnels, while this change documents the direct-connectivity limitation.

…source claims
Execution and validation build their clients from the stored host and
port, so they do not work through the BetterDB Agent (host 'agent') or an
SSH tunnel (dialled at the remote address). State that in the migration
doc and the ElastiCache guide, and change the ElastiCache feature table so
migration is marked as needing BetterDB Monitor with direct reachability.
Also qualify the README's PSYNC wording, drop 'in either direction' since a
cluster source needs a cluster target, scope the AWS permanent-failure note
to unsupported direct writes, and point the generic managed-source mode
rule at the provider guides.

Qualify redis_shake for cross-engine node-based migrations.
The node-based rows list redis_shake without the RDB compatibility condition. For Redis 7.4+ ↔ Valkey migrations, redis_shake fails because RESTORE rejects the incompatible RDB payload. Add the same limitation already stated for Serverless, and direct source migrations to command because redis_shake_sync is unavailable for ElastiCache sources.

…hem untested
Dragonfly implements REPLICAOF, REPLCONF and ROLE but not PSYNC or SYNC, so
redis_shake_sync cannot read from it; it also reports redis_version 7.4.0 and
is detected as Redis. KeyDB serves PSYNC and dumps RDB v9. Neither is in the
migration test suite, so the README now points at the engine table instead of
listing them as equals of Redis and Valkey. Also carries the RDB-version caveat
for redis_shake onto the node-based ElastiCache rows.
Clarify that Serverless blocks only per-key MEMORY USAGE estimates. Total memory still comes from INFO.
The row says blocked MEMORY USAGE means analysis cannot estimate dataset size. The migration analysis path does not depend on MEMORY USAGE. It reads the total from INFO memoryused_memory. Per-key and per-type estimates are unavailable on Serverless. The row should state that narrower limit.

# Shard Serialization
This document describes how Dragonfly serializes a single shard's data. It covers the point-in-time (PIT) snapshot mechanism, its correctness guarantees, and the machinery used to coordinate concurrent mutations with the serialization process.
## Overview
Shard serialization is used for three purposes:
1. Backups (RDB / DFS save) — produces a consistent point-in-time snapshot.
2. Replication (full sync) — serializes baseline data and then streams journal changes.
3. Slot migration — `SlotMigrationStreamer` serializes a subset of slots and streams changes.
All three share the same base class, `SerializerBase`, which owns the bucket traversal coordination, point-in-time isolation via DashTable bucket versioning, the change-listener callback, delayed (tiered) entry handling, and per-bucket dependency tracking. Concrete subclasses implement only how a single bucket/entry is turned into bytes:
Subclass | Location | Output format | Use case
--- | --- | --- | ---
`SliceSnapshot` | `src/server/snapshot.{h,cc}` | RDB (`RdbSerializer`) | Backups + replication full sync
`SlotMigrationStreamer` | `src/server/journal/streamer.h` | `RESTORE` commands (`CmdSerializer`) | Cluster slot migration
> Historical note. Earlier revisions of this document described a `--point_in_time_snapshot` flag that toggled between a "PIT" mode and a "non-PIT" (eventual consistency) mode, the latter using an `OnMoved` callback and cursor-based `IsPositionSerialized` tracking. That flag and the non-PIT mode no longer exist. All snapshots now use bucket versioning. DashTable item displacement is handled for every snapshot through `CVCUponInsert` (see Inserts and Item Displacement). The only remaining trace of "eventual consistency" is the `eventually_consistent_` flag, which now gates a journal-omit optimization rather than a separate serialization mode (see Journal-Omit Optimization).
## Core Types
while cursor not exhausted:
cursor = pt->TraverseBuckets(cursor,
it -> ProcessBucket(db_index, it, /*on_update=*/false),
/*include empty buckets=*/true)
PushSerialized(false) // explicit flush between buckets
yield if background mode, or if CPU time > ~15us
ProcessDelayedEntries(force=true, ...) // drain outstanding tiered reads
PushSerialized(true) // force-flush after each database
if send_full_sync_cut: // replication only
serializer_->SendFullSyncCut()
PushSerialized(true)
`
### `ProcessBucket` (shared, both traversal and `OnChange`)
`ProcessBucket(db_index, it, on_update): // serializer_base.cc
// Stale / already-serialized bucket:
if it.is_done() || it.GetVersion() >= snapshot_version_:
buckets_skipped++
if it.GetVersion() < snapshot_version_: // empty bucket: mark visited
For replica full sync, a write to a bucket the traversal has not yet reached is redundant: the traversal will serialize the post-mutation value anyway. In that case Dragonfly can skip both the serialize-before-mutate callback and the journal entry ("skip both").
`DbSlice::IsOmittableWrite` decides this:
// db_slice.cc — omit a journal write when:
// 1. the command supports mutation hints and uses a single key (is_omittable_operation)
// 2. there is exactly one change co…[truncated]</excerpt>

# Dragonfly v1.40.0
This is one of our biggest releases yet—both in terms of feature quality, total contributions, and the highest number of external contributors in the last two years. This release delivers major new functionality alongside a large body of correctness and stability fixes for tiered storage, replication, pub/sub, and the experimental V2 I/O loop. We added a new data type: Cuckoo Filters (CF.RESERVE, CF.ADD/ADDNX, CF.EXISTS/MEXISTS, CF.INSERT/INSERTNX, CF.INFO/COUNT/DEL/COMPACT, and RDB persistence). This brings Dragonfly to parity with RedisBloom's probabilistic structures alongside expanded Bloom filter (BF.INFO) and HyperLogLog support. Vector search gains native-width storage across all vector dtypes, EPSILON-tuned HNSW range queries, and EF_RUNTIME control. Meanwhile, a long list of fixes hardens tiered-storage interactions with strings, hashes, lists, bitops, and HLL commands, in addition to several replication-consistency fixes around lazy TTL expiry. Performance work includes lazy lock-table registration, zero-copy GET, and replica-side command batching.
* New Cuckoo Filter data type with full command set and RDB support.
* Vector search now stores/computes at native declared width, plus EPSILON and EF_RUNTIME tuning for HNSW.
* Numerous tiered-storage and replication consistency fixes (HLL, hashes, lists, bitops, hash-field TTL expiry).
## Highlights
* Added a full Cuckoo Filter data type with RDB persistence, bringing RedisBloom parity for probabilistic structures (feat: add cuckoo_family.cc and cf.reserve #7646, chore: cuckoo rdb support #7700).
* Vector search now stores/computes vectors at native declared width instead of always widening to FLOAT32, reducing memory usage (feat(search): store & search vectors at native width (FLAT + HNSW, all dtypes) #7849).
* Re-synced hyperloglog.c with upstream Valkey, fixing CVE-2025-32023 and adding AVX2/NEON kernels [up to ~29x speedup on dense HLL merges] (chore(hll): sync hyperloglog.c with valkey upstream #7961).

# Dragonfly v2.0.0
* Implemented the RESET command, resetting a connection to a fresh-connection baseline (#7760).
* Added Redis-compatible WAIT command, blocking until replicas acknowledge writes (#7454).
* Added HGETEX and HPEXPIRETIME hash commands (#7717).
* Added BF.INFO for Bloom filter metadata (#7761).
* Added BM25STD.NORM and BM25STD.TANH scorers for FT.SEARCH/AGGREGATE/HYBRID (#7692).
## Vector Search
* Vector search (FLAT and HNSW) now stores and computes distances at native declared width (INT8, UINT8, FLOAT16, BFLOAT16, FLOAT32, FLOAT64) (#7849).
* Added EPSILON parameter for HNSW-backed VECTOR_RANGE queries to control overscan/recall near the radius boundary (#7718).
* Added support for KNN query attribute block syntax (`=>{$EF_RUNTIME: ...; $YIELD_DISTANCE_AS: ...}`) (#7708).
* Fixed filtered KNN vector search to serialize only actual winners instead of every pre-filter match, cutting CPU/memory overhead (#7670).
## Cuckoo Filter
* Added CF.INSERT and CF.INSERTNX for bulk insertion, with optional CAPACITY and NOCREATE (#7719).
* Added compaction: CF.DEL auto-compacts past 10% deletions, plus a manual CF.COMPACT command (#7702).
* Added CF.EXISTS and CF.MEXISTS for single/multi-item membership checks (#7682).
* Added CF.ADD and CF.ADDNX, auto-creating filters with a default capacity of 1024 (#7681).
## Probabilistic Data Structures
* Added RDB serialization support for Cuckoo filters, enabling DUMP/RESTORE and persistence (#7700).
* Added CF.INFO, CF.COUNT, and CF.DEL for filter metadata, occurrence counts, and item removal (#7691).
* Added the base Cuckoo Filter data type via CF.RESERVE, with a new CUCKOO_FILTER ACL category (#7646).

Migration Protocol ... | Reached from `C_SYNC` when applying a streamed command returns out-of-memory.
## 6. Migration Protocol
A slot migration starts by adding a `migrations[]` entry to the source shard in the next `DFLYCLUSTER CONFIG`. Because migration is part of cluster state, the protocol is a reactive consequence of two configs landing on every node:
* the opening config introduces the migration entry, and
* the closing config removes the entry and reassigns the slots to the target.
Adding the same entry twice is idempotent; configs that do not change a source's outgoing-migration set leave its migration state machine alone. At most one migration may be in flight between any given source / target pair — enforced by config validation (§4.2).
The data path is one dedicated TCP connection per source thread-shard, opened by the source to the target's admin port. It is a separate connection from the source's replication stream. Over that connection, the source emits write-side commands derived from its local data:
* For strings and most collection types (`SET`, `HASH`, `LIST`, `ZSET`, top-level `STRING`), the source emits decomposed write commands (`SET`, `SADD`, `HSET`, `RPUSH`, `ZADD`), splitting large values into many small commands.
* For types that cannot be decomposed cleanly (`STREAM`, `JSON`, `SBF`), the source falls back to a single `RESTORE` command per key.
Mutations to migrating slots that arrive while the snapshot walk is still running are streamed as ordinary write commands over the same connection, so the target catches up incrementally with no separate journal channel.
The target executes every decoded command through its normal transaction framework, exactly as if it had arrived from a client. The writes therefore appear on the target's outbound replication stream like any other write, so target-side replicas converge without any migration-specific code on the replica side. The source's replicas are not affected by the migration channel — they keep replicating the source's full data, including writes to slots that are migrating away.
### 6.1 States
Each migration — source and target — moves through the following state machine:
` ┌──────────────┐ ┌────────┐ ┌─────────────┐
| INIT received; per-shard data flows have not yet been opened.
`C_SYNC` | Streaming snapshot data and concurrent writes over every flow. | Reading and applying decomposed writes and `RESTORE` payloads.
`C_ERROR` | A transient failure (peer disconnect, INIT rejected, ACK timeout). After a 500 ms wait the migration rewinds to `C_CONNECTING` and starts the sequence over. | Same — recoverable. The source's next INIT reuses the existing migration object on the target.
`C_FINISHED` | The ACK round-trip succeeded; the source has dropped the migrated slots from its local ownership. Terminal. | The ACK round-trip succeeded; the target has added the migrated slots to its local ownership. Terminal.
`C_FATAL` | Reached directly from `C_CONNECTING` when an INIT reply reports the target is out of memory, or from `C_SYNC` when an ACK reply reports the same. The retry loop exits. Terminal. | Reached from `C_SYNC` when applying a streamed command returns out-of-memory. The partially migrated keys are flushed. Terminal.
There is no exit from `C_FATAL` or `C_FINISHED`. Recovering from `C_FATAL` requires the cluster manager to remove the migration entry, address the memory shortage, and add a fresh migration entry in a later config.
`DFLYCLUSTER SLOT-MIGRATION-STATUS` exposes these states as the strings `CONNECTING | SYNC | ERROR | FIN…[truncated]</excerpt>

That's right, you can connect to Dragonfly via Redis protocol and via HTTP protocol — the server recognizes the protocol automatically during the connection initiation. Go ahead and try it with your browser. HTTP access currently does not have much info but will include useful debugging and management info in the future.
Go to the URL `:6379/metrics` to view Prometheus-compatible metrics.
The exported Prometheus metrics are compatible with the Grafana dashboard, [see here](tools/local/monitoring/grafana/provisioning/dashboards/dragonfly.json).
Important! The HTTP console is meant to be accessed within a safe network. If you expose Dragonfly's TCP port externally, we advise you to disable the console with `--primary_port_http_enabled=false` or `--noprimary_port_http_enabled`.
## <a name="background"></a>Background
Dragonfly started as an experiment to see how an in-memory datastore could look if it was designed in 2022. Based on lessons learned from our experience as users of memory stores and engineers who worked for cloud companies, we knew that we need to preserve two key properties for Dragonfly: Atomicity guarantees for all operations and low, sub-millisecond latency over very high throughput.

Scope Dragonfly’s PSYNC/SYNC claim to the observed build.
The row states that Dragonfly does not implement PSYNC or SYNC for all releases, but it only identifies an untested build reporting redis_version 7.4.0. Dragonfly’s official release notes document partial sync in v1.31.0 and cascaded PSYNC in v1.40.0. The unqualified claim can therefore misclassify newer releases and cause users to reject redis_shake_sync without checking the actual build. Qualify the claim and source restriction to the observed build. Retain that build as an unsupported redis_shake_sync source.

Summary
Documents how BetterDB migration relates to AWS ElastiCache, node-based and Serverless, following AWS's 2026-10-21 launch of online migration into ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey. Docs only, no code.
Changes
docs/providers/aws-elasticache.md: new "Migrating to or from ElastiCache" section with a direction-by-mode table. AWS restrictsPSYNCandSYNCon every ElastiCache cache, soredis_shake_synconly applies when ElastiCache is the target; a managed source getsredis_shake(DUMP/RESTORE) orcommandmode as a snapshot copy. Also describes what AWS's own tool does and does not accept, and how BetterDB on the source side complements an AWS-run migration.docs/migration.md: "Managed providers" subsection under topology support with the same two constraints.README.md: migration bullet widened to any-to-any, either direction, naming the providers.Related: #568 (replication lag field), #569 (explicit cutover action), #570 (Serverless readiness checks). Website side: BetterDB-inc/website#44 for the comparison page and blog post.

Note
Low Risk
Docs-only updates to README and migration/provider guides; no runtime, auth, or data-path code changes.
Overview
Documentation-only expansion of live migration guidance for managed AWS ElastiCache and broader engine/topology coverage—no application code changes.
The README live-migration bullet now spells out supported directions (self-hosted and managed providers, standalone vs cluster rules), PSYNC-based cutover when replication is allowed, and a pointer to KeyDB/Dragonfly in the engine table.
docs/migration.mdadds an Other engines matrix (Redis/Valkey versions, KeyDB, Dragonfly vsredis_shake_sync/redis_shake/command) and a Managed providers subsection:PSYNC/SYNClimits on sources, RDB version caveats for DUMP/RESTORE, and that execution/validation dial the cache host directly (agent and SSH tunnels are analysis/monitoring only).docs/providers/aws-elasticache.mddowngrades migration from fully supported tocommandonly), and how BetterDB compares to AWS’s October 2026 online migration into Serverless.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 003e1c6.
