Today, we’re making GitHub Copilot in JetBrains more capable, secure, and seamless. From GitHub Copilot Fusion’s smarter model orchestration to local sandboxes and next edit suggestions (NES), this update brings powerful improvements to how you build, review, and manage work.

What’s new

GitHub Copilot Fusion

GitHub Copilot Fusion is now available for Copilot users in JetBrains IDEs. Copilot Fusion delivers stronger task-completion results at lower cost without requiring users to choose and coordinate models themselves. Select Standard, High, or Max based on the level of effort a task requires, and Copilot determines whether to use a single model or combine multiple models while balancing quality, speed, and cost.

Copilot Fusion replaces the current Auto model option and is gradually rolling out to all GitHub Copilot users. Copilot Fusion use is discounted 30% for the first 30 days.

Local sandboxes are now generally available

Local sandboxing for GitHub Copilot in JetBrains is now generally available. Local sandboxes give developers a secure execution boundary for agentic workflows on their own machines. Tools and commands initiated by Copilot run with restricted access to the filesystem, network, credentials, and other system capabilities, based on policies defined by the developer or their organization.

Next edit suggestions (NES) generally available

Next edit suggestions (NES) are now generally available in JetBrains IDEs, with higher suggestion quality, better context awareness, and a smoother experience for reviewing and applying suggestions inline as you work.

Agent harness

The Microsoft Copilot agent harness is now the default harness for all users when available.

Session sidebar

Use the session sidebar button to open sessions side by side directly from individual sessions.

User experience enhancements

  • Settings access: Find GitHub Copilot at the top level of IDE settings.
  • Agent selection: Find Copilot ahead of Local in the agent picker when both providers are enabled.
  • Completion flow: Get better coordination between inline completions and next edit suggestions, including follow-up suggestions after accepting a completion.
  • Account notifications: See concise, timed messages for sign-in, sign-out, and account switches, including the authenticated account name after a successful switch when it’s available.
  • Plugin updates: Open the Plugins Marketplace filtered to the official GitHub Copilot plugin directly from Copilot update prompts.
  • Turn details: Hover over a Copilot agent turn to see completion time, generation time, and per-model token usage.

Quality improvements

This update improves edit reliability, cancellation recovery, and selected-code context so you can work with fewer interruptions or lost changes. It also addresses problems with customization access on Windows and WSL, prompt templates after language server restarts, and IDE responsiveness.
