Morning Dew... [Aug. 17th, 2010|11:10 pm]
A Discussion of the Future

freedom_anarchy

Look into the Future, what do you see? [Jan. 14th, 2010|03:12 pm]
A Discussion of the Future

brillsville
[Current Mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]

The future worries me greatly. Our leaders / governments have no vision. They follow Hitler and Brave New World (the book by Huxley).
I believe they will continue to mine and plunder this planet, Then they will destroy other planets. All the time getting sadistic pleasure from watching suffering, perhaps because they are incapable of feeling empathy i.e. a low form of Human, because they have never suffered, or known what it feels like.

I see vast arrays of concrete and glass skyscrapers, domino effects, and hardships ahead, with the people perpetually asking / wondering why such madness - shouldn't this place be wonderful? - why are we trapped in this hell-hole? - is there no escape? - no hope of a better life?

Yes, I care about how people feel, and I'd like to offer my services (click on my picture to find out more).

A happy future IS possible.

The future is something we shape. So specify clearly to leaders - let them know how you would like the world to be.

ways to die in the future [Jul. 13th, 2009|10:36 am]

This PhD-comic had me thinking. In the future, will everyone be dying of cancer?

Looking at the causes of death, there's the heart stopping. That's just a pump. Then there's clogging or leaking of the bloodvessels. Again it's a mechanical problem and we've got at least 2000 years of experience in plumbing. Then there's infections. That's more of an arms-race, but there's a clearly identified enemy that's not part of a healthy body. We can attack the enemy outside our bodies, by cleaning, we can stop it entering our bodies and we have a good chance of telling friend from foe if they get inside us.

That leaves cancer, which if the students quoted in the comic/report is anything to go by, is a LOT harder to deal with. That leaves the impression that in the future, cancer will be a much more common cause of death. Using the table I've linked to and some quick math, it seems that if cardiovascular diseases were eradicated, cancer as a cause of death would increase by 42%.
(That's making the still reasonable assumption that 100% of all people die :-)
Create a utopia where both cardiovascular and infectious diseases are controlled and every fourth death will be from cancer, worldwide.

This ties in with a cherished notion in futurism and a known problem in health services. It was long thought that there was a maximum lifespan for people that we would soon reach, but this has not been the case. Average lifespan has been increasing for a long time and has not slowed down. singularity-believers like Ray Kurzweil happily point to statistics like that, saying that we're already on the road to immortality.
How has this come about? The progression of Medical science has turned deadly diseases into mere chronic ones and increased the lifespan of those with chronic diseases. AIDS and diabetes are two good examples. It seems a sensible priority to save lives, but it also means that the average person will spend more of her lifetime in a diseased and debilitated state.

Had there been an upper limit to our lifespan, this wouldn't have been a problem. Medical science could have fought diseases until they were confined to the very last years of our lives. This was called "compression of morbidity" in the 80's. Instead it turns out that doctors add years of ill health to our lives, with the spiraling costs of healthcare that results in.

Is this an issue we're able to deal with? Would we be willing to take money away from research that aim to save lives, and direct it towards better health for the living? Or are the two intertwined? Is is possible to rid someone of a chronic disease without also increasing their lifespan?

this prewar prediction caught my attention.

“Can the English-speaking peoples protect Australia as a white man’s country? They can to-day. But at a time when the energetic and capable Americans are very dubious whether they could even to-day protect the Philippines against a Japanese attack, it is not without pertinence to point out that any defense of Australia must be accomplished very far from the home bases of both Great Britain and the United States – and that an armed China would have enormous man-power at its disposal.”

(…)

“Equally obviously Premier Hughes fears, and fears rightly, that Japanese eyes are turned towards Australia. His speech breathes that fear throughout. But he pins his faith to the British Navy, to the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, and to an understanding with America. He appeals to America. ‘If she can not agree with Japan, how is she to help Australia?’ But does America really want to help Australia in the event of Japan’s insistence on freedom of entry? It has long been obvious to the thinkers of the great Republic that Japan must soon ‘find room somewhere for her rapidly expanding population’. And she is taking the necessary steps to preserve the purity of her own white race. But it does not follow that she is equally anxious about the purity of the Australian section of the European race. It is actually in the mind of many Americans that Australia, being the only empty area of any magnitude in the world, and more closely connected with Asia than any other land, is the natural sphere of Japan’s extension (…)”

Though clearly racist, the argument proceeds in a convincing almost logical manner given the underlying assumptions. If Japan want to expand their empire by attacking their neighbours, thinly populated Australia seems like low-hanging fruit compared to China with its massive population. The size of your army has always been important, right? And wouldn't Japan want to export an expanding population and settle them elsewhere, in a parallell to what a rising Britain did earlier? This commentary takes common knowledge, extrapolates trends and assume that history repeats itself in similar patterns. Yet it gets it wrong on so many levels.

But I cannot see how a contemporary would go about picking apart this commentators' argument. I think future studies and more generally our predictions and expectations of the future fall into the same trap. We extrapolate a lot and draw parallells to past events, yet I see few predictions questioning our assumptions and beliefs. This is somewhat ironic, considering that most of us also believe in a more advanced future where we ourselves would seem backward and ignorant.

[May. 13th, 2009|08:03 pm]

Thoughts on something obvious [Sep. 10th, 2008|10:20 am]
A Discussion of the Future

Generally, we're more knowledagble about the recent past than the distant past. There's more and better information on the 19th century than the 16th which is in turn better than what we've got on the 9th.

Why is this? There's at least two answears:

* The most common is that it's a function of distance, that knowledge simply get lost over time.

* Alternatively, it's a function of literacy, with society getting better and better at documenting itself. For instance, the french book "Descriptions des Arts et Métiers" from around 1770 describe contemporary handcrafts and manufacturing techniques that most likely would have been lost to the future without it. Such books were rare or nonexisting in earlier times but can be picked up at many bookstores today.

Then what will the future know about the past? If the second answear is true, the future will know us a lot better than we know the past. If the first answear is true, it means that despite the continued efforts of scholars and archeologists, we now know more about say the 16th century than any future generations will ever know.

A combination could be that as we get better at documenting the present, we also get better at documenting the past, so that knowledge of the 16th century is passed undiminished to the 22nd. In any case, the experience of how the past recedes from us seems set to change in the future.

Decentralism, the meta-ideology of the future [Feb. 15th, 2008|12:27 am]
A Discussion of the Future
fine_clarity
Currently, political ideologues (such as hard-line demicans and republicrats) are arguing and competitively voting over which ideology gets to control the various countries of the world. I believe that, in time, people will realize how wasteful all of that expended competitive effort is, and will realize that larger gains can be had with smaller effort by personally moving to jurisdictions that have an ideology that is more similar to one's own, and implementing one's ideology on a small scale among people that are largely consenting, rather than trying to push one's ideology upon others. Of course, everyone will still want to impose their ideologies upon others, but it will be of much lower priority than personally living in an area of one's own ideology.

Many people have realized that. There is the 'christian exodus' group, which intends to establish a christian theocracy in the state of South Carolina, which is one of the more appropriate states for a theocracy, though Mississippi would be the best choice. There is the self-named 'free state project' which intends to establish a minarcho-capitalist system in New Hampshire. New Hampshire is a dubious choice of state though, because it has an above-federal minimum wage and a tax on interest and dividends. There is also the clustering of far-left people in the San Francisco bay region.

There are also foreign groups that seek autonomy, most notably the kurds. As it becomes apparent that a variety of groups seek self-determination, I believe that these individual groups will form alliances with eachother, to serve their common interest of shrinking central authorities. This is notably contrasting with future predictions that there will be progression toward a one world government. I therefore believe that in the future, there will generally be much more variety in the ideologies of jurisdictions, and the scope of central authorities (such as the federal government of the United States) will be smaller.

The pursuit of centralized government causes wars and other conflicts, whereas the pursuit of self-determination causes peace. Just look at what is happening in Iraq; due to the assumption that Iraq must be one country rather than three (an assumption that is promoted by GWBush and the antiwar people alike), the politicians of different groups are squabbling indefinitely and the militiamen of different groups are killing eachother.

I believe that this shift is likely to occur relatively soon (in less than 50 years) due to a few factors, including: 1. All of the habitable land, and even much of the uninhabitable land, has been claimed by countries, meaning that people cannot found new independent colonies. 2. The cold war is over, thus eliminating the strong military-ideological tension that makes the two sides want to force their ideology onto others. 3. There is the internet, which facilitates political networking and idea propagation. 4. As a consequence of the internet, there has been networking of intentional communities, which are a method of decentralism.

However, these factors will only be sufficient for people that exceed a certain threshold of intelligence and self-control, so it is uncertain exactly how many people would make that shift in strategy.

I will do my part. I have created a livejournal group for anyone that supports decentralism:
