Mining

Background

The process of mining involves taking valuable minerals and resources—such as coal, metals, and gemstones—out of the Earth. Mining presents serious threats to the environment and public health even though it is vital for economic growth and supplies resources for many different sectors. “Mining activities can lead to environmental contamination, health problems, and socio-economic issues in local communities,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Mining is a significant economic activity in Ghana, especially in areas with abundant resources of gold and other minerals. Nonetheless, the industry has difficulties with public health and environmental management. Locally referred to as “galamsey,” illegal mining has seriously harmed ecosystems and communities by contaminating water supplies and degrading the environment. The World Health Organization emphasizes that “long-term illnesses from prolonged exposure can lead to serious health conditions, including respiratory and skin diseases, as well as exposure to toxic substances from mining.”

Air pollution, land erosion, water pollution, and habitat destruction are some of the negative effects of mining on the environment. Deforestation and other landscape modifications brought on by mining operations can cause biodiversity loss and disturb regional ecosystems. Mining-related chemicals like cyanide and mercury can contaminate water sources and food crops, harming aquatic life as well as human populations. In addition to airborne dust and mining-related emissions can aggravate respiratory conditions and other medical conditions.

The role of EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plays a crucial role in mitigating the environmental impacts of mining in Ghana. This includes permitting mining activities, ensuring compliance with environmental laws and regulations and enforcing mitigation regulations on land pollution and degradation. The EPA ensures Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are conducted for mining projects, educates the public on sustainable mining practices and the environmental risks associated with mining activities. Furthermore, the agency works in collaboration with other governmental bodies and stakeholders to protect the nation’s biodiversity, aiming to promote sustainable mining practices across the country.
