2026 World Cup final
[edit]Hey there! I just wanted to clarify the reason for one of my edits that you recently reverted. The sentence "The tournament was contested by hosts United States, Mexico, and Canada" is less than ideal grammatically, because "United States" is almost always preceded by "the" in English. That's why I changed it to The tournament was contested by hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States". Then I changed the order of the hosts in the Background section to match the new order in the lead. Please let me know if this makes sense. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 15:41, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry if I took a while.
- Now thinking about it, I believe that your reasoning makes sense. I wrote "hosts United States, Mexico, and Canada" in the first place because there was a similar sentence ("hosts South Korea and Japan") in the lead section of the 2002 World Cup final. However, South Korea is not grammatically preceded by "the" and the United States is. I apologize for the grammar mistakes I made. I am still learning on how to improve my writing skills on here, so I don't have to use references from previous articles. Thank you for explaining your reasoning. I hope you have a good day :) MatthewPlayThrough (talk) 16:29, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind reply. I made edits based on the reasoning we just discussed. Take care :) OrdinaryOtter (talk) 18:34, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
World Cup final minor edits
[edit]Hello again!
I just wanted to point out a problem I found with this edit. The new version makes it unclear what those seven matches were, or even if they were part of this World Cup. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 01:54, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Added "in the World Cup" to clarify that the matches were held at the stadium. MatthewPlayThrough (talk) 02:34, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
Copyediting
[edit]Hey again!
I wanted to give you a little feedback about copyediting regarding this edit. The reason for the edit is unclear. If your changes make the sentence carry the same meaning, why change it? Next time, please explain why your version is superior. In this case, the word "into" is incorrect, as the correct English phrasing is "ended in a scoreless draw". Also, while the word "owing" is correct English, the word "due" is used much more frequently, at least in American English, and it's also shorter. I made an edit that addressed these two problems while leaving your other changes to that sentence intact. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 03:03, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
MatthewPlayThrough: A few more notes.
- Please avoid slightly vague statements like "Argentina took the lead in the first half through Messi". It is simpler and clearer to state "...took the lead in the first half with a goal by Messi". It leaves no doubt about what occurred.
- For the general reader, it is important to clarify the difference between career World Cup goals across multiple World Cups and goals scored in a single World Cup. That's why the phrase "at World Cup tournaments" was in the article.
- Make sure to identify which team players are on. I'm restoring "of Cape Verde" so the reader knows immediately which team Sidny Lopes Cabral plays for. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 23:28, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
Match summary
[edit]Hello!
I have a few questions and comments about this edit.
- If we state that Allister "received no yellow card from the referee" we have to say why we're mentioning it. We have to talk about how it was controversial. Otherwise, mentioning it makes no sense; we don't add the clause "but received no yellow card from the referee" after every mention of a foul.
- What is the purpose of this sentence? "Olmo ran down the middle of the pitch and attempted to find Marc Cucurella from the left, but Gonzalo Montiel intercepted". We can't mention every time a player tried to make a pass, but failed. If we keep this in, we need to explain why this play was notable.
- I had put in this version: "...Cucurella's left-footed shot went wide of the goal." The version you restored is much longer: "Cucurella had an opportunity to score when he struck a left-footed shot from the far corner but went wide of the goal." Shots are always understood to be opportunities to score, so this seems redundant. Also, what is the far corner? We have to explain what that means.
Thanks for your time, and I hope you have a good day. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 04:29, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
