Tajikistan is divided into four first-level administrative divisions: two provinces (Tajik: вилоят, romanized: viloyat), one autonomous region (Tajik: вилояти мухтор, romanized: viloyati muxtor), one zone of districts directly subordinate to the central government (Tajik: ноҳияҳои тобеи ҷумҳурӣ, romanized: nohiyahoi tobei jumhurī), and the capital city (Tajik: пойтахт, romanized: poytaxt). These first-level units are further subdivided into a total of 58 districts (Tajik: ноҳия, romanized: nohiya) and 17 cities of regional subordination (Tajik: шаҳрҳои тобеи вилоят, romanized: shahrhoi tobei viloyat), plus the capital city of Dushanbe which has a special administrative status.
As of 2024, the total population of Tajikistan is estimated at 10,277,100. The most populous region is Khatlon with 3,697,800 inhabitants, followed by Sughd with 2,917,300, the Districts of Republican Subordination with 2,197,000, the capital city of Dushanbe with 1,564,700, and the Kuhistoni Badakhshon with 233,600.
Sughd
[edit]Sughd Region (Tajik: Вилояти Суғд, romanized: Viloyati Soǧd) is one of the four provinces of Tajikistan. It is located in the northwestern part of the country, bordering Uzbekistan to the west and south, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, and the Districts of Republican Subordination to the southeast. The region covers an area of approximately 26,100 square kilometres and is the second most populous province, with a population of 3,020,000 as of January 1, 2026, accounting for 28.1% of the country's total population. The administrative capital is Khujand, the second largest city in Tajikistan.

Khatlon
[edit]Khatlon Region (Tajik: Вилояти Хатлон, romanized: Viloyati Xatlon) is one of the four provinces of Tajikistan. It is the most populous of the four first-level administrative regions, located in the southwestern part of the country. The region covers an area of 24,700 square kilometres and consists of 21 districts and 4 district-level cities. The administrative capital is Bokhtar.

Kuhistoni Badakhshon
[edit]Kuhistoni Badakhshon Region (Tajik: Вилояти Мухтори Кӯҳистони Бадахшон, romanized: Viloyati Muxtori Kūhistoni Badaxšon) is an autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan, located in the Pamir Mountains. It is the largest of the four first-level administrative regions, covering an area of 62,900 square kilometres[citation needed] nearly 45 percent of the country's total land area but is sparsely populated with only about 233,600 inhabitants as of 2024 (2.3% of the national population).[citation needed] The administrative capital is Khorugh.[citation needed]

Districts of Republican Subordination
[edit]Districts of Republican Subordination (Tajik: Ноҳияҳои тобеи, romanized: Nohiyahoyi tobe’i jumhuriy) is a region in Tajikistan, consisting of districts that are directly under central rule. The region covers much of the territory of the former Gharm Oblast, which was dissolved in 1955. It is situated in the central part of the country, stretching from the Hisor valley in the west to the Rasht Valley in the east. The city of Dushanbe, the national capital, is surrounded by, but not part of, the region.
