everything that falls in place just falls apart again I guess
ABOUT: I am a woman. I believe gender is a spectrum, not a binary. I am polyamorous. This doesn't mean that I'm not 100% committed to my boyfriend. It means that suppression of sexual or romantic desire is not part of our relationship. It means we love and trust each other enough to not feel threatened by one another's desire for another person. I believe in a personal divinity and I believe in an impersonal divinity and I do not believe in the concept of divinity at all. It depends on my mood. People label me agnostic; I typically do not identify as agnostic. I believe that people should always come before profit. I believe that people must always come before profits for there to be prosperity. I believe that we are all responsible for one another's well-being and prosperity. I believe that the natural world must be respected. I believe that anyone who acts without regard for the earth should be regarded as committing a crime against humanity, because they are dooming future generations. I believe that democracy and capitalism are good systems. I do not believe that they are the be all and end all as far as forms of governance or economics go; I believe it is irresponsible and ignorant to assume they are. There is always room for improvement. I value individual freedom above all else. I believe if a woman wants an abortion, she should have the opportunity to have one. I believe that if two men want to marry, they should be able to do so. I believe that if a person wants to die, they should have the option of doing so with dignity. I believe that it should be completely legal to use any mind-altering substance that does not cause the user to be an immediate danger to other inpiduals. I believe that nothing should be censored. I believe that complete freedom tends to be taken advantage of. I believe that, given such freedom, many people will choose paths that hurt others. I do not trust humanity to make moral choices in the face of total freedom. Still, I advocate it wholeheartedly. I believe in the teaching power of making mistakes. I believe that always choosing the clear, safe path is dangerous because it leads to stagnation. I believe that change, mistakes, suffering, and danger are necessary, so long as they are temporary. I believe in the power of chaos and uncertainty and change. I believe in its beauty and goodness. I believe that if your beliefs never change, if your values are never challenged or in conflict, if you are never uncertain about what is right, you are doing something wrong. I believe that everything is relative. I believe that there is no meaning to life, that the world is inherently devoid of meaning, and that the meaning and importance we see in things and words and deeds is ascribed to those by us. I believe we can re-create the world as we wish. I believe we each live in our own world. I do not believe that absolutes exist. I do not believe there is one right way. I believe tolerance for those who don't think or act like us is not enough. Respect and acceptance are not optional. Nevertheless, I do not believe that we have some sort of inalienable right to not be offended. Being offended by something is not a good reason for someone to stop doing that something. I believe that no one should have the right to force their beliefs on others. I believe that in spite of all the fear and anger and confusion and destruction, the world is a beautiful place.
INFO FOR VISITORS: SAFE SPACE POLICY This journal is intended to be a safe space. First and foremost it is a safe space for me, and I will do whatever it takes to keep it that way. Feel free to ask questions about, discuss, or politely debate my beliefs, opinions, and thoughts, but do so with tact and respect.
I have heard it said that tact is simply not saying things that are true. If you believe this, I respectfully call bullshit. Not saying things that are true is what is known as lying-by-omission. The use of tact does not call on you to lie, either blatantly or by omission. It simply calls for you to think before you speak, and to phrase ones words in the most respectful manner possible. I am not asking you to lie or to pretend you like someone you don't. I am asking you to make an active effort to be as respectful as possible when you comment here.
This journal is also intended to be a safe space for those of my LJ friends who comment in it. Any comments left in my journal that follow the above rules are to be respected, even if you disagree with their content. If someone leaves a comment respectfully disagreeing with my thoughts, my friends need not feel compelled to defend me. If the comment clashes with one of my friends' opinions, I expect any response they give to also be written with courtesy and respect. Rude, disrespectful, and harassing comments will not be tolerated. I have extremely limited patience for extremism of any kind; I may be a liberal, but I find liberal extremism to be just as distasteful as conservative extremism. I do not tolerate homophobia, bi-phobia, fat-phobia, trans-phobia, abusive anti-religious sentiments, abusive anti-atheist sentiments, ableism, or elitism of any kind. I take disparaging remarks against the privileged as seriously as those made against under-privileged and oppressed. Threats of violence against myself or any commenter, or comments to the effect of "You are a horrible, disgusting person for having this opinion/taking this stance/etc" may get you de-friended and/or banned. Consider yourself warned.
