Join the LiveJournal Revival! Are you fed-up with garbage, full-of-shit sites where nobody actually communicates, such as Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr? Do you wish your old friends who've migrated to those sites would return to LiveJournal? The the_lj_revival community has been set up with that aim in mind, and you are invited to join it. If you are already on LiveJournal and still have a Facebook profile, and would like to see more people returning to LJ or setting up accounts here, we invite you to post a link to this community on your Facebook Timeline. If you would like to find out who is still using LiveJournal and make contact with those who are already here, you are invited to copy and paste the 'about me' questions on the profile page and post them with your answers to the community. Longniddry
It took me a while, but I eventually managed to get a grip and get moving today. I took a bus out to Cockenzie in East Lothian, and walked purposefully from there along the shore to Longniddry, up to Longniddry Station, and from there along the old Haddington Branch to Haddington. I would guess I covered about ten miles in around two-and-a-half hours, including a climb of 300 feet from the shore at Longniddry to the highest point on the old railway. In theory, that shouldn't have been enough to leave me hobbling like a cripple, but that's exactly what I'm doing! A few years ago I was thinking about walking the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. It's 96 miles altogether and I'd have had to cover between ten and twenty miles each day, including long, steep hills. Going by my present level of fitness, there's no way I could have done it. I took a few photos on my travels, though for most of my walk the sky was dismal and grey and rain never seemed far away. A rubber glove tree seen at Longniddry Bents, East Lothian, on 1st July, 2013.( Seven moreCollapse ) Current Mood: tired | | Monday, July 23rd, 2012 | 7:49 pm [rock_dinosaur]

Prestonpans
It's been another warm and sunny day today and I was determined to make the most of it, but I couldn't think where I could go that I either haven't already visited multiple times, or that is within reasonable travelling-distance. Then it occurred to me that the laburnum trees were in bloom when I visited Kirkcaldy yesterday, and that I'd been meaning to revisit the laburnum arch at Preston Tower in Prestonpans ever since my last visit there in 2010. So I headed down to Waverley Station and got on the first train for Prestonpans, which is the third station out from Waverley on the line to Dunbar and Berwick-upon-Tweed; the journey only takes about fifteen minutes. Unfortunately, when I got to Preston Tower, I found that I'd arrived perhaps a week too early to see the laburnum arch at its best: the laburnums weren't in full bloom yet. Nevertheless, Prestonpans is a lovely old place, full of big trees and ancient, high stone walls, and all the more beautiful in the fabulous weather. A mass of poppies in bloom by the approach path to Prestonpans Station on 16th May, 2019.( Twelve moreCollapse ) Current Mood: busy | | Thursday, July 8th, 2010 | 8:52 pm [rock_dinosaur]

Preston Tower Cherries ripening on a tree in the grounds of Preston Tower, Prestonpans, on 8th July, 2010. There were masses of them but the wind was blowing the branches all over the place, so it was rather difficult to get the cherries in frame and in focus!( Seven moreCollapse ) Current Mood: busy | | Thursday, October 12th, 2017 | 10:28 pm [rock_dinosaur]

bugger http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/5341736.stm"East Lothian council is to resume regular street-sweeping in Tranent despite original plans to hold out until the weekend." Why have they capitulated? Pressure from the local community? Pressure from "voters"? I think they should have held out: there is a problem, and it needs to be solved. An early capitulation means that they'll be steamrollered again... its opened a weakness. | | Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | 1:43 pm [wee0ne]
