Richard Wilbur- from "Opposites"
Some Opposites by Richard Wilbur What is the opposite of riot? It's lots of people keeping quiet. The opposite of doughnut? Wait A minute while I meditate. This isn't easy. Ah, I've found it! A cookie with a hole around it. ( Read more...Collapse ) | | Saturday, February 19th, 2011 | 11:47 pm [ninagrosh]

Robert Brault Quotes
Count no day lost in which you waited your turn, took only your share and sought advantage over no one. Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. I value the friend who for me finds time on his calendar, but I cherish the friend who for me does not consult his calendar. Looking back you realize that a very special person passed briefly through your life- and it was you. It is not too late to find that person again. The average pencil is seven inches long, with just a half-inch eraser - in case you thought optimism was dead. The object of most prayers is to wangle an advance on good intentions. Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, for I am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true. | | Saturday, February 5th, 2011 | 6:58 pm [englishgames]

| | Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 | 4:59 pm [inga_voin]

Color Idioms from an ESL forum I was tickled pink about the golden handshake I had just received, it had came like a bolt out of the blue and now I was looking forward to painting the town red as I took the red-eye out of Washington, I was a bit green around the gills as we flew over the green belt when I heard a golden boy talking a blue streak about a once in a blue moon, golden opportunity, he lost due to his black sheep brother who didn’t have the grey matter to see the red flags and avoid being caught by the men in blue and that he was going to be black balled from the black tie event of the year, he was as white as a sheet ,was singing the blues and was definitely not in the pink. ( Tickled pink: happy, elated. Golden handshake: To receive much money upon leaving a company. Bolt out of the blue: An unexpected event. Painting the town red: Having a good time, dancing, drinking, etc. Green around the gills: Nearly ill, nauseated. Green belt: An area around a city where trees and grass grow. Golden boy: A favored person, usually a sports figure. Talk a blue streak: To talk without stopping. Once in a blue moon: A rare event. Golden opportunity: An unusually good offer. Black sheep: A member of a family that is not accepted well by others, someone who causes trouble or is odd. Grey matter: Brains. Red flags: Warnings. Men in blue: Police. Black balled: Not allowed to participate or attend. Black tie event: A formal affair requiring formal attire. White as a sheet: A person whose appearance is very white due to some sort of shock. Singing the blues: Telling people that you are unhappy. In the pink: Doing very well, happy.) | | Monday, April 19th, 2010 | 11:35 am [ninagrosh]

Yeah, Right... and more fun with language
1. A linguistics professor was lecturing to her class one day. "In English," she said, "A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative." A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah . . .right."(The joke is fairly well known but this version I found here.) 2. Just a conversation from a friend's Facebook page: A: I will go insane if I keep reading works of I. Kant! B: Try reading something written by I. Can . A: Should I read Obama's inauguration? B: if you want to you can :) Reminded me of some teacher's statement: " Can't is a Four-Letter Word not allowed in my classroom." (Just in case: Four-Letter Word usually refers to a "bad", curse word.) | | Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 | 11:49 pm [i_s_a_n]

On Middle Age: Middle age is, when you finally get it all together and forget where you put it. There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget. Middle age is, when you keep thinking you're thirtysomething till you realize that's what your children are... On psychiatrists: --How many Psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? --One, but the light bulb has to want to change. | 8:50 pm [ninagrosh]

Good old joke revisited :) A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts: "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?" The man below says: "Yes, you're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field." You must be an engineer" says the balloonist. "I am" replies the man. "How did you know." "Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's no use to anyone." The man below says "you must be in management." "I am" replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?" "Well," says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help.? You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."
"Christmas must be something more..." | | Thursday, December 25th, 2008 | 12:07 am [ninagrosh]

Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk, waddle Paddling around the lake Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk, waddle - There must be some mistake: You don't look like the other ducks and your quack's too deep and strong With the Honk, honk, waddle, waddle, Honk, honk, waddle song Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk, waddle Sometimes you don't fit in Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk, waddle, And when it's sink or swim, Just try to keep your head held high And try to sing along With the Honk, honk, waddle, waddle, Honk, honk, waddle song It's very hard to be different, Especially on your own; With that song you can't go wrong And you never swim alone... Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk, waddle All around the pond. Honk, honk, waddle Honk, honk - we always knew you were a swan, But when you find out for yourself, You know where you belong: With the Honk, honk, waddle, waddle, Honk, honk, waddle song | | Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 | 12:27 am [moriawase]

dodo birds
Dodo birds became extinct in the 17th century. The way I heard it, they were too stupid to run away when they faced a direct threat. To call somebody a dodo bird means to say that they aren't very intelligent. But for some reason I used to think this phrase can be used lovingly and tenderly called my young students dodo birds when they made a silly mistake. Now I'm not so sure, though, that this phrase can be used inoffensively. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodo Current Mood: embarrassed | | Monday, February 11th, 2008 | 11:17 am [ninagrosh]

(This dog is no longer around)... | | Monday, February 4th, 2008 | 12:21 am [ninagrosh]

Quote from an actual conversation with a coworker: - I'll be back soon; in case you can't read my handwriting, please call my cell phone. Coworker (surprised) : - Can your cell phone read your handwriting?
