Introduction

The Rufescent Flycatcher was formerly considered a subspecies of the Bran-colored Flycatcher (Myiophobus fasciatus), along with the Mouse-gray Flycatcher (Myiophobus crypterythrus), but these were split on the basis of plumage and vocal differences. Compared to the much more widespread Bran-colored Flycatcher, many aspects of this species' life history remain unstudied. It is a species of edge, second growth, and desert scrub, found in coastal Peru south to extreme northern Chile. It is an earthy brown upright-perching tyrant flycatcher with distinct buffy-rufous wingbars and unstreaks buffy-rufous underparts.
