Welcome to this week's Top 7, where the DEV editorial team handpicks their favorite posts from the previous week (Saturday-Friday).
Congrats to all the authors that made it onto the list ð
@theycallmeswift put the most-hyped decision model, Jev, head to head with Gemini Flash-Lite on real production eval checks, and found that one rewritten sentence in the prompt took Jev from dangerous misroutes to zero. The post explores what it takes to get a literal-minded model right and why he still hasn't abandoned Gemini.
@cheetah100 traces how code review evolved from red-pen meetings to pull requests, asking what evidence each stage actually provided about whether code works. With AI generating code faster than anyone can read it, they argue that humans should own the definition of "correct" rather than approve every diff.
@sheraz4194 uses a frog in a freezer analogy to explain falsification, the idea that a single counterexample can disprove what thousands of passing tests seem to confirm. Drawing on chaos engineering at Google and Netflix and a double-charge bug he caught in his team's payment service, he makes the case for writing tests that try to break your assumptions.
@mikachu built a text-based survival game to see whether local LLMs would tell the truth to the colony they protect, then discovered her own prompt was shaping the answers. After rebuilding the test with priced dilemmas, she found that one sentence of framing could flip a small model's honesty 40 times out of 40.
@shubhradev tested what really happens on a Node.js server when a client aborts a fetch, and found that handlers, downstream calls, and Postgres queries all keep running. Along the way, they uncovered a database driver that silently ignores abort signals and share the patterns they now use to cancel work properly.
@leehack set out to build a 3D Flutter game with local AI and ended up with Llama Village, where five llamas with their own knowledge, goals, and gossip go about their days while you play as Dash. The post walks through how on-device models give the characters a voice while game rules decide what each llama actually learns.
@jenlooper shows how to turn an Arduino Uno Q into Kiku, a tiny Tamagotchi-style pet that gets hungry, plays, and falls asleep on the board's LED matrix. It's a friendly first hardware project that covers state machines, serial input, and time-based behavior.
And that's a wrap for this week's Top 7 roundup! ðŽ We hope you enjoyed this eclectic mix of insights, stories, and tips from our talented authors.
