Deadlands Update

Last time was here, where we discovered a gold-laundering operation as a result of Samson looking for a lost boy, and Nikolai made friends with the editor of the local newspaper. This time, we started off having dinner with said newsman, who outlined what he'd do with a $200 grant from Nikolai. He had some good plans, but made it clear that Nikolai wouldn't have any editorial control at all - Dewey is committed to the truth. This suited Nikolai fine, who's really just out to make some money and develop some power anyway, not exert cultural influence.

After dinner, Samson told us that we needed to check out the mine again, as he figured that boy was still there somewhere. We trucked out to the mine and searched, eventually finding a huge room with a strange stone seal in it. As Samson (in puma form) walked over it, the charm he wears round his neck got warm and started pulling toward the seal. He called us over, and Jane noticed her ring getting warm, too, as did Nikolai's cloak clasp. Part of the seal was broken - we guessed that Delilah might have had the other piece.

Jane initially thought about taking off her ring and putting it in the little hollow that seemed to want to accept it, but Nikolai, an occultist, you'll recall, stopped her. He also reminded them about the letter he'd translated that spoke of the rebirth of Apollyon, so we decided to get the heck away from this thing. At the other end of the room, anyway, was a cage with the boy in it, so we freed him.

He told us that some smelly guys had nabbed him after he'd blundered his way in here. We started taking him out, and said smelly guys attacked us - zombies! Nikolai used Phantom Fingers to hold them back, and Jane cooked them with her flamethrower, so that wasn't hard.

We took the boy home, and sent for the doctor to look him over. We then woke up the Sheriff and told him about the laundering. Since we were deputized way back here, he gave us some credence, but did make it clear that the town is really in the mine owner's pocket. But we saddled up and headed out to the mine to show him what was up.

And when we arrived, we found a cart with recently produced gold-mixture-rock. So someone's down there working.

Next time, we figure out what's up.
