Best PoE Switches for Security Cameras and Wi-Fi Access Points

You have a few PoE cameras and a ceiling access point or two, and you want one switch to power all of it over the same cable that carries the data. No wall wart per device, no injector dangling in the rack. The hard part is not finding a “PoE switch” (there are hundreds) but picking one whose power budget actually covers your gear, on ports fast enough not to choke a modern access point.

That second half is the thing that changed in 2026. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points now ship 2.5GbE (some multi-gig) uplinks, so a plain gigabit PoE switch quietly caps a $200 AP at gigabit. Cameras do not care, but your APs do. So the “default” camera-and-AP switch is drifting from gigabit up to 2.5G-with-10G-SFP+ uplinks, and the price gap between the two is smaller than it used to be.

I run this exact setup at home, a handful of PoE cameras feeding a Frigate NVR plus two ceiling APs on one switch, and I re-checked every price, port count and power figure below against the manufacturer spec sheets and the live Amazon listings in September 2026.

Prices and stock came from Amazon’s catalog the week this went out; treat them as bands, not promises, and click through for the live number.

I did not lab-test all six side by side. What I have done is run PoE cameras and APs off switches like these in my homelab for years, so the trade-offs I flag (fan noise, the “half the ports are PoE” trick, PoE+ versus PoE++, a power budget that browns out under load) are the ones that actually bite. Where a number depends on hardware revision, I say so instead of picking the one that reads best.

This is the one I steer most people to for a mixed camera-and-AP setup, because it solves the 2026 problem: eight 2.5GbE ports, so a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 AP actually runs above gigabit, plus dual 10G SFP+ to feed a NAS or trunk back to the core. All eight ports do PoE+ on a 240W budget, and it is a genuine L2+ managed switch, so you can drop cameras onto their own isolated VLAN instead of letting them talk to everything.

Who it is for: anyone running modern multi-gig APs alongside cameras who wants VLAN segmentation and 10G uplinks without stepping up to enterprise gear or price.

Skip it if: the two 40mm fans are a dealbreaker. This is a 1U switch and it is audible; people put it in a closet or swap the fans, not on a desk. It is also PoE+ only, so 30W per port maximum. And 240W across eight 30W ports means zero headroom if every port pulls full power, so do the budget math before you fill it.

Centralized cloud management needs an Omada controller (the hardware OC200/OC300 or the free software controller); standalone, it still has a full web UI. Around $380, check the live price.

2. NETGEAR GS308PP: best value 8-port

Eight gigabit PoE+ ports, fanless, for about the price of one decent camera. If you just need to power a handful of cameras and an AP and you do not care about VLANs, this is the honest default. It is unmanaged, so there is nothing to configure: plug in and it works.

Who it is for: a straightforward camera-and-AP deployment where silence and price matter more than management.

Skip it if: you want to power eight hungry devices at once. The base budget is 83W, which is roughly 10W per port averaged out, not eight ports at a full 30W (that would need close to 240W). It handles a few cameras and an AP comfortably; it will brown out if you hang eight PTZ cameras off it. You can raise it to 123W with NETGEAR’s optional FlexPoE power module, but that add-on is not cheap. No SFP, gigabit only. About $85 on sale (it lists near $130).

Five gigabit ports, four of them PoE+, fanless, in a palm-sized metal box. For two or three cameras and an AP at the edge of the house, this is the cheapest thing worth buying. The fifth port is a non-PoE uplink back to your router.

Who it is for: a small or satellite location, a garage camera plus an AP, anywhere you need a couple of powered ports and silence.

Skip it if: you need more than four powered devices, or want them all at full 30W. The 65W budget spread across four ports is realistically two to three cameras plus a light AP, not four 30W loads. One thing that trips people up: do not confuse it with the TL-SG1005P-PD, which is a PoE-powered pass-through unit with no wall adapter, a completely different product. Around $45.

When you actually want all eight ports powered and do not want to babysit a budget, this is the cheapest way there. Every one of its eight gigabit ports does PoE+, on a shared budget that is comfortably bigger than the GS308PP’s. It is the “just power everything” unmanaged box.

The gotcha here is the budget number itself. TP-Link’s current spec sheet lists this switch at 153W, but the Amazon listing is still titled as the 126W revision, so you may receive either depending on stock. Both are more real per-port headroom than an 83W switch; just do not plan around 153W if the box says 126W.

Who it is for: six to eight cameras plus an AP, where you want simple and cannot be bothered rationing watts.

Skip it if: you want it silent. Unlike the smaller TP-Link boxes, this one has a fan, so it is not a living-room switch. No VLANs (unmanaged), gigabit only. Around $95 to $100.

5. NETGEAR MS510TXUP: best for high-power APs

Everything else on this list is PoE+ (30W). This one is the reason you would pay up: real 802.3bt Ultra60 PoE++ delivering up to 60W on every port, on a 295W budget, with multi-gig copper and two 10G SFP+ uplinks. A tri-band Wi-Fi 7 AP or a heated PTZ camera that needs more than 30W has somewhere to plug in.

Who it is for: high-power tri-band APs, PTZ or heated cameras, or a future-proofed core where you want multi-gig plus 60W headroom on all ports.

Skip it if: your gear is happy on 30W, which most cameras and dual-band APs are. This is roughly $690 and has three fans, so it is enterprise-closet loud, not desk-quiet. The “8-port” count is really ten physical ports, and only four of the copper ports reach full 10G; the SFP+ pair are non-PoE. Overkill unless you specifically need bt. About $690, check the live price.

6. NETGEAR GS308EPP: best silent smart switch

This is the sweet spot for a lot of homelabs: all eight ports PoE+ on a genuine 123W budget, VLANs and per-port PoE control through NETGEAR’s Easy Smart web UI, and no fan at all. You get the camera-isolation and management of a managed switch and the silence of an unmanaged one, for a fair price.

Who it is for: someone who wants VLAN segmentation for cameras, all eight ports powered, and a switch quiet enough to sit in a living space.

Skip it if: you need 2.5G or 10G. This is 802.3at and gigabit only, with no SFP, so it will bottleneck a multi-gig AP the same way any gigabit switch does. One trap when you buy: get the GS308EPP (123W), not the similarly named GS308EP, which is the weaker 62W version. Around $160.

A note for UniFi and Omada people

If you already run a UniFi console, the ecosystem pick is the USW-Pro-Max-16-PoE (180W, twelve gigabit PoE+ ports plus four 2.5G PoE++), with the fanless USW-Lite-8-PoE as the small entry point. Both are usually cheapest bought direct from Ubiquiti, and at the moment the Pro-Max is out of stock on Amazon anyway, so buy it from the source. The catch with any UniFi switch is that none are standalone: they need a UniFi controller or console and a Ubiquiti account to manage. If you are in Omada instead, the SG3210XHP-M2 above is the Omada-native managed pick.

How to size a PoE budget (the mistake everyone makes)

The single most common PoE mistake is buying by port count. You see “8-port PoE,” hang eight devices off a 65W or 83W budget, and then cameras randomly drop offline, APs reboot every few hours, a PTZ freezes mid-pan. Two things cause it.

The ports do not each deliver 30W. A switch advertised as “8-port PoE, 83W” cannot run eight devices at a full 30W; that needs about 240W. The wattage on the box is a shared pool, not a per-port guarantee. So the right way to size is the reverse of what people do: add up each device’s real draw from its datasheet (a camera pulling 8W takes 8W, not 30W), then add 20 to 30 percent headroom for night-mode IR, heaters and future devices. A four-camera, two-AP setup realistically wants a 120W-plus budget, not 65W.

Count powered ports, not total ports. Plenty of “8-port PoE” and “5-port PoE” switches only power half their ports. That is exactly why the TL-SG1005P above is listed as four-of-five, and it is the trap in the switches I tell people to avoid below.

It also helps to know that a PoE standard’s headline wattage is measured at the switch port, and the device gets less after cable loss. That is why a 60W bt port only guarantees about 51W at the camera. The full picture, straight from the IEEE standards:

Most cameras and mainstream dual-band APs live happily on 802.3at (30W). You only need 802.3bt (60W and up) for tri-band Wi-Fi 7 APs, heated or PTZ cameras, and the odd LED panel. Switches to avoid (the half-power trap)

Two popular listings look like eight-port PoE switches and are not:

  • TP-Link TL-SG1008P: despite “8 Port” in the name, only four ports are PoE (a 64W budget). Fine if you know that; a nasty surprise if you plugged devices into ports five through eight expecting power. Its bigger sibling, the TL-SG1008MP above, is the true all-eight-PoE unit.
  • Zyxel GS1200-8HP: same story, only four of its eight ports deliver PoE. The “8-port PoE” label is doing a lot of work.

The rule that catches both: read the spec line for how many ports are powered and what the total budget is, never the port count in the product name.

What I would actually buy

If I were wiring a house today with a mix of cameras and modern APs, I would put the Omada SG3210XHP-M2 in the rack for the 2.5G ports and VLANs, and take the fan noise as the cost of doing it right. On a tighter budget where everything is gigabit and I wanted silence, the GS308EPP gives you VLANs and eight powered ports with no fan, and the GS308PP is the cheapest thing I would trust for a couple of cameras and an AP. Only reach for the pricey MS510TXUP if you genuinely have 60W devices, because for most people 30W is plenty. Whatever you pick, size the watt budget to your real device draws plus headroom, count the powered ports, and you will not be the person whose cameras drop offline every night.
