This is a place for survivors of dysfunctional families and relationships. The details of our stories may be very different and take a long time to sort out. But when we talk to each other, we tend to understand better than anyone who doesn't really know. It's a place to allow yourself to grieve, to allow yourself to recognize your pain, to find validation, and to share your wisdom.

This is the first community bio, it may change in the future.

Rules (subject to change):

1) NO TROLLING. This is especially important for survivors of dysfunction, because our situations are sometimes hard to explain. We've probably heard a lot of people tell us to "get over it," "stop whining," and lots of other minimizing or derisive or blaming things. It's not necessarily helping us. We're tired of that. This is a safe place to be heard.

2) The reach of this community is broad. As far as I can imagine, it's okay to post things like personal stories, articles, historical information, and topics dealing with institutionalized dysfunctions based on discrimination (anti-gay, misogyny, racial issues, etc.). You may post announcements to similar communities with a short description, but no begging for membership. Requests for zine submissions are welcomed. Unrelated posts will be deleted. You may post charity announcements, but I reserve the right to contest a charity if I think that it's not relevant. Participate in charities at your own risk.

3) NO quizzes, unrelated polls, memes, or the like. I will delete them as soon as I see them.

4) If you accidentally post something incorrectly, I suggest you learn to edit or erase them yourself. To do this, click on the "Comment" option at the bottom of the post. Locate the small blue pencil icon centered above your text. Click that to edit your text or delete it. I will do it if it's not cleared in 24 hours.

5) Conduct yourselves in a respectful manner. Everyone's story is different and goes off in unique directions. No namecalling, insulting, or grammar fanaticism. Avoid "painting with a broad brush" or oversimplifying a matter. No one should force you to change your mind, but be willing to consider something unorthodox. I cannot watch the community every minute. If you get into a heated debate, please try to be diplomatic. If it gets out of hand, contact me.

6) Be cautious in suggesting and taking medical advice. Be open to different ways of treating mental disorders. Herbs don't work for everyone. Pills don't work for everyone. Try to back up your suggestions with research or educational links.

7) Be friendly with the LJ cut for long or triggering posts. Especially, please leave a warning that the contents of your cut might be triggering. Change the identies of the people in your stories and obscure their faces in photos. NO PHOTOS OF SELF INJURY.

8) A memories section is in the works.

9) Feel free to suggest things to add to the Interests list. Also you are welcome to suggest communities or links to post in this info page.
