I'm new.
Hello everyone. ;) On May 31, 2007, I'm having a Celtic wedding. I have a dress already, but I'd like to customize it. It's sort of victorian, but I'm going to make it Celtic, of course. Any pictures of cool Celtic dresses? Thanks. :) | | Monday, June 26th, 2006 | 2:00 pm [elderwood]

Allo there, just joined. I am quite intrested in Celtic culture, mostly in Eireann's folktales and Myth, but I like Cymru's, Alba's, and some others too. My favorite book on Celtic myth would have to be Peter Ellis's "Celtic myths and heroes". I am myself mostly Irish, with some Icelandic in me. Intresting fact about my family, we are the descendents of the first Milespain King, if our family story and Sheild speak the truth. The story in our family runs as thus. Two brothers were racing in a boat and whoever reached the shore first would win the land, one brother seeing that he was going to loose severed his hand and tossed it to shore, thus we have the red hand upon our sheild as the only design. and the phrase "Leamh Dearg Abu" written 'neath. Now being a metalhead I have to ask anyone like any of the Celtic metal bands out there, Primordial, Cruachan, Skyclad, Sudikra? | | Wednesday, March 1st, 2006 | 11:59 pm [children_of_lir]

Kilts = clown gear? Dia dhuit ar maidin,Presently, I'm sure there are causes in the world that are more in need of getting riled up over. But in a country built upon, and supposedly priding itself in, diversity...this gesture simply struck me as plumb ignorant: ( Student Removed from High School Dance for Wearing a kiltCollapse )Apparantly the rest of us are forgetting to wear the fright wig, boutonniere and squeaky shoes along with ours... :::honk honk::: agat, Mo Charai,~F Current Mood: Mildly honked off. | | Monday, November 21st, 2005 | 8:35 pm [gaelic_flame]

Bloody Sunday 1920
On this date 85 years ago, agents of the IRA assassinated 14 members of the British intelligence service in Ireland on Michael Collins' orders. These members, part of the "Cairo Gang", were the spearhead for the British intelligence reports in Ireland. Later on that same day, 14 innocent civilians were massacred by the legendary Black and Tans while attending a football match. This incident was the deciding factor for the British to pull out of the lower 26 counties of Ireland. | | Sunday, November 20th, 2005 | 9:06 am [wingxnut18] |

the new guy in town... :)
Hi guys! I’m new here, so I just wanted to take a minute to say hi! I am the third generation of my family to be born on American soil, with my great grandparents coming from County Donegal, Ireland. I am proud of my heritage and fond of the culture that I grew up learning about. The myths, legends, and history of the Celts and of Ireland have motivated and inspired me in many ways. If anyone is interested, one of those ways happens to be Celtic Jewelry. The history behind the symbols and the beauty of Celtic artwork mystify me, and keep me wanting to learn more. Please take a moment and visit http://www.celticjewelrybox.com and let me know what you think. If you happen to see something you like, we have lots of excellent deals. That being out of the way, I am looking for some online resources to help with my Gaelic before my next trip to Ireland. Any suggestions? x-posted a few places | | Monday, September 26th, 2005 | 4:42 pm [myfanwy_65]

Go mbeannai Dia annseo!
Hmmm....seems to be quiet the last couple of weeks. Fionn here--somewhat new to LJ, but long time Celtic enthusiast. Triple-threat: Irish, Scots and Welsh ancestry (hey, anybody else notice that recent Celtic fads seem to have completely left Wales out of the loop???) I'm a Celtic musician: harp, vocals, guitar...pending album, sound previews available on my website ;) Visual artist and fantasy writer as well. I also do historical reenactment through the SCA. GREAT place to network with folks who are into old Celtic culture, in all its aspects. Conas tá sibh féin? Current Mood: bouncy | | Thursday, June 16th, 2005 | 11:46 am [bodhicide]

Book of Kells
Anyone know where I can find a pdf version of the Book of Kells (an ornate book created by Celtic Christian monks in Ireland, Scotland, and England containing the four Gospels in Latin and some other miscellany)? | | Monday, April 4th, 2005 | 4:30 pm [scousered]

Saint Patrick's Day
Apart from the Church day of the feast of St. Patrick, here is some information about the man. This is a day observed less in Ireland than in the United States, Australia, and other places with legions of Irish emigrants and their descendants. In the name of Ireland's patron saint, we march in parades, drink pints of tinted beer, cook corned beef and cabbage, and wear a bit of green. But the fact is that the man himself remains an enigma. Patrick's history is riddled with inconsistencies. Although there is no official date on record, modern historians place his birth at about 390 and his death around 461 C.E. While he is arguably the best-known Irishman, he was actually born in Britain of Welsh and Breton parents. It is said that he was kidnapped as a teenager and taken in slavery to Ireland where he tended sheep and discovered his deep connection to the country. He later bargained for his freedom, returned to Britain and studied Latin theology until he could go back to Ireland as a missionary. While known as the first Irish bishop, he may well have appointed himself to the position, and there is even some question about his membership in the priesthood. Much has been made of Patrick's persuasive personality, his ability to preach, teach, and convert. It has even been suggested that the snakes he supposedly drove from Ireland were not serpents at all, but Druids and other pagans. In his book Drinking from the Sacred Well, Celtic scholar John Matthews urges us to consider Patrick in a different light, to appreciate him for honesty, strength of conviction, and generosity to his converts. Whatever the truths of Patrick's life, he exemplifies a pivotal time in Irish history as the old ways retreated into the shadows, never to be entirely lost, and the new ways transformed the land. By the way, being a MacNiell is of great pride to me on this day in particular because of our connection. though it might not be solidly provable, most accounts have it as Niall Noigallagh (Niall of the nine hostages) who kidnapped Patrick. He is the one for whom the clan MacNiell is named. Erin Go Bragh Alba Go Bragh Current Mood: happy | 2:43 am [gaelic_flame]

St. Patrick's Day To Do List • Take off B.U.M Equipment sweatshirt, put on Notre Dame sweatshirt. • Start off the special day right with McMuffin and Shamrock Shake. • Fill empty shake cup with whiskey and march in parade. • Leave parade after 10 minutes. Enter favorite Irish bar. • Call "Sully" & "Murph" to let them know just how wasted you already are. • Clap at the wrong times while singing along with "The Wild Rover." • Aggressively tongue kiss fat drunk girl in between bites of corned beef sandwich. • Do "Cabbage Patch" dance over and over until somebody gets the Irish reference. • Keep your shtick going and bust out your funny "Riverdance" routine. • Due to exhaustion, pass out in alley behind bar, reappear in bar one hour later completely invigorated. • Strategically place "Kiss Me I'm Irish" pin on fly. Harass every female within 20-foot radius. • Instigate a donnybrook. • Nod your head as friends discuss Shane MacGowan and act like you know who the hell he is. • Acquire brogue. Pretend you're from Ireland. Fool no one. • Not bat an eye at the plastered woman holding a 4-month-old in the smoky, crowded bar. • Hunt down actual Irish person, proceed to bore him to tears with your strikingly limited knowledge of the Emerald Isle, including the mispronounced names of the counties where your great great grandparents might have lived. • Thoroughly enjoy every Jim McGreevey joke you hear. • Spout anti-English sentiments and proclaim your admiration for the boys in "The I.R.S." (you mean I.R.A.). • Act like bagpipes aren't the worst sound you've ever heard. • Spill entire pint of Guinness on stranger. Get in fistfight with stranger. Hug stranger. Introduce stranger to everyone as your new best friend. • Wake up in puddle of puke (not your own) and realize its only 3:00pm. Leave Men's room and continue drinking. Current Mood: drunk |
