hbanana
it's been closed for four years, and this article came out on friday
http://www.jewishsf.com/content/2-0-/module/displaystory/story_id/31635/format/html/displaystory.html

please talk to your rabbis/educators/parents and see if they can help in any small way. i know that many of us spent the best summers of our lives at swig, and i don't think we can just let them sell it.

"S8er Boi" Available as Free Download

www.jeremygimbel.com

Are you bored with Passover songs? Do you wish Hanukkah wasn't the only holiday with new songs like Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song," or "Hanukkah Hey Ya"? Do you wish there was a Passover parody that wasn't written to a melody that was popular before you were born? Are you tired of reading rhetorical questions? Well, here's a question that actually has an answer: What do you get when you take the "k" out of Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi"? That's right: "S8er Boi". Check it out at www.jeremygimbel.com and liven up your s8er!

Feel free to pass this on to your friends and family!

More on Rosh Madrachim [19 Oct 2005|09:21am]

josh_in_610
i haven't worked out exactly what i'm thinking, but here goes:

I would be a moderator between counselors and rashim.
I would have all session schedules
I would know who was on their day or block off
I would know where every counselor was supposed to be and when.
I would make sure the counselors are doing what they're supposed to be (to an extent)
I would sub in for any counselors who seriously were in need of, say, an hour break
I would be the the voice from the counselors to the "higher ups"
I would make sure the counselors were treated the way the should be treated
I would be available to help with discipline on boys row
I would be available to help manage conflict within the staff itself
I would make sure that the big events going on around camp were going well and
I would be available to supply a helping hand, if ever necessary.
And since CIT advisors aren't with the CITs when they are filling in for counselors on days or blocks off, I would be available to give experienced advice in certain counselor circumstances, and maybe even help giving CITs an hour off (gasp!).
I could help run CIT programs,
I could help run Staff week!
I would take care of eidah assignments.

I forsee a few problems:
1) I feel that by seeking a job like this, I would be suggesting that these type of counselor/rashim/director relations are not already perfect ... and it's bad to ever suggest that something Sam does is imperfect.

2) The position still lacks something tangible and concrete. That is to say, at this point, my job seems like a lot of roaming. What do I do when I'm not needed? What do I have to fall back on during the day, that I could take care of in my office?

What do you think?

What should I be? [18 Oct 2005|11:56pm]

josh_in_610
I should apply to work at camp again this summer ... sometime soon, I suppose.

But seriously, what should I be? It's almost like there's no jobs left. Rashim keep coming back, CIT classes of 04 and 05 will almost all be there, all specialists are Israeli ...

I want to be a Rosh Eidah, or a CIT or Avodah advisor (seemingly the only possible positions available) ... or something. I seriously don't know ...

My ideal job? Rosh Madrachim. The head of all counselors. A liaison between the highest ups and the counselors. I would make sure the counselors are doing what they're supposed to do, but also that they are being treated the way the should be treated. That would be great.

I have a feeling that I won't get any responses to this as the entire community is likely to be in Santa Rosa right now, but is it true that I have to call in like two weeks early to visit on Shabbat? All of my friends are hiding from me at Newman again and I must see them.

Question... [08 Jun 2005|11:39pm]

[ mood | excited ]

So camp starts in almost 10 days [well at least for Avodah & CIT] and I'm more than excited. Is there anything I should bring for Avodah that I wouldn't have brought in previous years? Also, do they care if Avodah gets packages with food in them? Because my best friend really wants to send me a care package, but I gotta tell her whether or not she could put candy in it...yeah. If you can help me out, that'd be great!

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited! See you guys in almost 10 days!

I'm kindof nervous about the part where it is EIGHT WEEKS! aaah! and also about the laundry situation. how many times do we get to wash our clothes??? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Later,
Jessica

What Should I do? [02 Mar 2005|01:53am]

josh_in_610
Well yes, I'm quite happy that I'm coming back this summer to staff again. But ...

Okay, so I still haven't gotten my paycheck from last summer ... As many times as I email Julie Ottis and am told that it's on the way, the fact is ... it's not. Some people have told me to demand more money for this summer; other people have told me to threaten not to work ... etc. I don't want to have to do either of these things because i really don't want to have to look at camp from a business perspective. What're your guys' thoughts?

Camp DVD? [23 Dec 2004|09:42pm]

_moment
[ mood | curious ]

Ok, maybe I'm just dreaming things, but this has to do with camp in 2003.

I remember when I was at Swig for Omanim [part of Hagigah, when they had 2 sessions], these people were filming us around camp for some camp DVD. And I know they were filming at Newman also.

Does anyone remember this? And if this all actually true haha, what happened to it? Are we ever going to see it? Cause I have friends who go to different camps and get like camp videos and yearbooks each year, and I wish we had that kind of stuff :[

broken_harted22
yes...so i've been keeping a countdown in my agenda for school. and as of December 23, 2004 there is exactly 179 days until camp. That's if your a camper and you're going at the beginning of the summer. subract a day if your avodah or cit and subtract a week if your a counselor.

So...see you in 179 days :-D

oh, camp... [12 Dec 2004|08:04pm]

shaynanigans
Hey! my name is Shayna and i just discovered this community. I went to Camp Newman for 2 years (Kesher '00, I forget '01) and Swig for 2 years (Machon '02 and Hagigah-Omanim '03). Then in 2004 I went to Israel with the East Bay Jewish Community Federation for 4 weeks.

Thinking about camp makes me want to cry. I had such amazing times there and it completely played a huge part in everything that has shaped me and will continue to shape me.

I forced my sister to go 3 years ago and she loves it as much as I did. In 2005 she'll be in Hevrah. It's sad that I can't go anymore because all of the sessions that are for my age group are all summer, and I can't commit to a whole summer gone from home because there's just too much other stuff to do. Plus I'm lame. I just try and get my camp fix through my sister. Oh, well. I'm hoping to come back and be a counselor when I'm in college.

Soooo, I guess that's all. Just wanted to say hi!

Hey,
I applied for CIT this summer, and I haven't heard anything back from camp and it's been about a month. Do most people get in who apply? By the way, I went to Swig in 2002 for Machon and 2003 for Teva and then last summer (2004) I did songleading at Kutz.

Avodah 2005 [28 Nov 2004|11:40am]

_moment
Ok, for those of you who don't know who I am, I'm Lauren, and I was in Hagigah 2004 this past summer and had one of the greatest times at camp ever. I signed up for Avodah, and the other day I got a letter in the mail from camp saying I was an Avodah applicant. I know there's like another application to fill out, but what about the interview? Do you meet with someone or do it over the phone? I was just curious. Also, what are the chances of me and my friends from camp this summer getting into Avodah if we go to camp and our temples are part of URJ? Thanks!

-Lauren
