Battlestar Recs Returns

Hello BSG lovers! It has been more than a year since we last had recs for all of the great fic written by BSG lovers. I thought it might be fun to have another round where people sign up to provide 2-5 recs over the course of a week (to be assigned). Recs can be for recent or old fics.

This is a great opportunity for all of you lurkers out there who read a lot but maybe don't post or write. I would love to hear from some of you about which stories you love and read all the time. If you don't want to post, feel free to PM me and I can post your rec for you. :)

So...if you are interested in providing recs (any pairings or gen), please leave a comment below. Have a lovely day!

Fanfic: Leiascully's New York AU Opus

Title:   There are about fifteen stories for this series -- Here is the master link:

http://leiascully.livejournal.com/480377.html

Author:  The sublime Leiascully

Main pairings/Characters:  All our favorite Battlestar friends in contemporary New York City.    Kara, Lee, Tigh, Ellen, Bill, Laura -- they're all walking the streets, so real that I looked for them when I saw The Book of Mormon last year.

Rating:  MA

Warning:  Graphic sex

Length:   Various

Genre:   AU

Why do I love these stories:
For one thing, one of my favorite lines from fanfic is there:   When Bill and Laura first have sex:   She eases into position and guides him slowly into herself. She's glad she's kept in practice, so to speak, with Richard and with toys, because she wants tonight to be all pleasure.

I am crazy about the idea of Laura looking back on Richard as 'practice', thinking him with no more emotion than a vibrator.  Ha!

Fanfic: Slightly Ajar

Title:  Slightly Ajar
Author:  TJonsey
Main pairings/characters:  Roslin/Adama, Cottle, Thrace, Tyrol, Cally
Rating:  MA
Warnings:  Graphic Sex
Length: (wordcount or short-medium-long) 10181
Genre (optional):  Humor
Summary:  Bill's little admiral gets trapped inside one of the last bottles of honey left in the world.

Why do I love this story?:    I laugh every time I see a honey pot.   Sweet and sexy and absurdly hilarious....

Title: Aegis
Author:wisteria_
Main pairings/characters: Kara/Lee, Kara/Matt (L&O:UK)
Rating: R
Warnings:
Length: medium at ~5700
Genre (optional): Crossover with Law and Order: UK (for those not familiar, the character of Matt Devlin on L&O:UK was played by Jamie Bamber)
Summary: Seeing right through idiots like her was his job. But keeping him safe was her job, and she’d had centuries of practice.
Why do I love this story?: In general, crossovers and re-incarnation are not at the top of my list of fic preferences. This one, however, is so perfectly done that it is one of my favorite fics of all time. Sexy, intriguing, and so full of angsty goodness that it makes me squee at every read.

Title: no one's the killer and no one's the martyr (on AO3)
Author: leiascully
Main pairings/characters: Kara/Cain, Cain/Gina, Kara/Cain/Gina, Kara/Sam, Kara/Lee, Kara/Laura, Laura/Bill, Dee/Billy, Gaeta/Hoshi, Kara/Zak
Other pairings: Kara Thrace, Helena Cain, Felix Gaeta, Louis Hoshi, Gina Inviere, Lee Adama, Bill Adama, Laura Roslin, Sam Anders, Anastasia Dualla, Billy Keikeya
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Major Character Death, Kink
Length: Long at 27,384 words
Genre (optional): Modern Day Western AU
Summary: Kara Thrace outrode, outroped, outshot, and outdrank the men, and then she came to work for Hellraiser Cain.
Why do I love this story?: This is a fantastically painful story that shows the brokenness and strengths of every character I love and then some. It's beautifully written, as one would expect from leiascully, but the thing that makes me love it so much as that it makes me ache. I'm a sucker for the threads of personal failing, frailty, and pain that run through BSG and this fic captures it all vividly. The writing is lyrical and evocative, capturing the flavor of the American West so well that it leaves me tasting dirt. It's a delightfully kinky journey through the emotional minefields of human love, independence, and courage. It's one of only about three BSG fics that has ever made me cry, so be warned.

Title: The Disappearing Ground
Author: shah_of_blah
Main pairings/characters: Kara/Lee
Other pairings and characters: None
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Length: ~1600
Genre: angst, fix-it fic
Summary: Lee is afraid to sleep, afraid that if he lets go she’ll vanish. She’s done it before, but this time she won’t come back.
Why do I love this story?: When I first found BSG fandom I was trying to cope with the Kara/Lee ending and read lots of fic. This one in particular didn't so much remove the poof or change what Kara was, but instead extended Kara and Lee's journey in a way that created a more emotionally satisfying ending. It's still sad, but beautifully and sensitively written, and it fills a need for real closure that the show didn't provide.

The Disappearing Ground

Title: Youth's Final Luxury
Author:lls_mutant
Main pairings/characters: Gaeta, Zarek, Gaeta/Skulls, Gaeta/Baltar, Roslin/Zarek (unrequited), Gaeta/Hoshi, Zarek/Racetrack
Other pairings and characters that appear(if relevant): Baltar, Dee, Tyrol, the mutineers, Adama/Roslin
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Recreational drug use.
Length: long
Summary: Tom Zarek and Felix Gaeta didn't have much to do with each other, until they were both working for President Gaius Baltar.
Why do I love this story?:
This story shows exactly how and why Felix Gaeta and Tom Zarek would ever team up for a mutiny (which, let's face it, came a little out of the blue on the show). Felix's journey from idealistic young man in love with Baltar to that bitter man that gets executed is described so well - every step along the way is totally believable. And the portrayal of Tom Zarek in this fic is one of the best I've seen. Seeing his journey unfold along Felix's is fascinating - not in the least because they wind up having so much in common.

Title: Pillars of Salt and Pillars of Sand: Part 1 and Part 2
Author: lls_mutant
Characters: Kara Thrace, Felix Gaeta; Mal Reynolds, Simon Tam, Zoë Washburne, Hoban 'Wash' Washburne, Kaylee Frye, Jayne Cobb
Pairings: gen, with very background canon pairings
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Length: ~18,000
Genre: Crossover; BSG/Firefly
Summary: When the Demetrius happens on a broken Serenity, they've got the parts to fix her. In return, Mal takes Kara Thrace and Felix Gaeta to Greenleaf to see this civilization. But Greenleaf isn't exactly Paradise, and when does anything ever go as planned?
Why do I love this story?: This crosses another of my two favorite fandoms and it’s by one of my favorite writers, lls_mutant. The characterization and voice for all of the characters is dead-on. I can see these characters getting along exactly like this. It has a great meaty plot. And, of course, any Demetrius Arc AU where Felix Gaeta gets to keep both legs works for me. Ultimately, it’s just a fun read that's worth staying up until you finish.

Title: Unfortunate Circumstance
Author: ALC Punk
Main pairings/characters: Kara, Sam; Kara/Sam
Other pairings and characters that appear: Gibbs, Shepard, DiNozzo, Ziva, Tim, Abby, Shepard
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: language, Kara Thrace/Sam Anders cuteness, snark of some sort, het, murder
Length: ~6,000
Genre: Crossover; BSG x NCIS
Summary: Kara Thrace ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately for Gibbs, Leoben is scarier.
Why do I love this story?: This story is a great example of how to make an unlikely crossover work. Besides which, Kara’s found holding a gun over a body she didn’t shoot; there’s a snarkfest of BSGxNCIS proportions; Kara/Sam at their most utterly adorable; and Abby totally ships Kara/Sam & loves their tats. What’s not to adore and love?

Crossover Weekend: Prometheus to 12

Title: Prometheus to 12
Author: Lord Onisyr
Main characters: ‘L’, Felix Gaeta
Other characters that appear: Watari, Head!Gaius
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Canon Character Deaths
Length: ~6,300
Genre: Crossover; BSG x Deathnote (animated version)
Summary: As the Kira case winds down, L grows more unhinged but not from impending death. Watari's deep secret, a terrifying invention 150,000 years in the making, the ghost of a condemned man, and the reality of his very existence will soon crash in on him.
Why do I love this story?: This is a rare crossover of two stories I love. The storytelling is inventive; it takes themes from both series and weaves them together in a way I haven’t seen before while staying true to both stories. Also, the character voices Watari, L, Gaeta, and Gaius all manage to stay dead on.
