| | annoyed | ] | So, I left DeviantArt for quite some time because I felt like most people there would just idiots. I missed watching the few good artists, and so i came back. I critiqued some art, and before you know it, i was banned for "trolling". For critiquing art. WTF. I filed a complaint, but doubt those DevArt nazis will even look at it. I guess DevArt wants to protect their precious cash cows. |

| The New Ban System |
[May. 7th, 2006|12:26 pm]
BANNED DEVIANTS
|
Do you ever wonder what it was like to view banned deviant's userpages in the past? Well, you can only do it for a little while longer on Google cache because last month, DeviantArt has now blocked the userpages of banned deviants as well as the user who tries to access it on their first visit after being banned. Visitors who try to visit a permanently banned deviant's userpage is greeted with this message:
"User Banned - This user is no longer a member of deviantART."
A deviant upon his/her first visit after being banned is greeted with this message as well:
"User Banned - You have been banned from deviantART, therefore all artwork, prints, journals and content have been deleted for you."
The user can click on the "View Your Userpage" button to see what's there before they send a deviant ban inquiry. This includes the following:
* Their final statistics, personal information as well as the "Status: Banned Deviant" message. * To the left side of their userpage, the featured deviation, recent deviation, wishlist additions, recent/random favourites, a screenshot of their devious desktop, the watched by list and the recent visitors list (subscriber only) will be displayed. * On the right, you see the User Banned box, the "Expiration: Indefinite" text, the reason for the ban and a disclaimer regarding a deviant's questions or concerns about their banishment. Below it, their recent and possibly their final journal entry, either their My Friends list with the 20 most recent avatars (subscriber only) or the deviantART Notice with the advertisements. * The following boxes that a banned deviant can longer see are the webcam to the left, their devious information, devious comments field (containing all of the 20 most recent comments) and devious thoughts comment box. The devious comments field used to be displayed on banned deviant's userpage, but no more due to abusive purposes. * The data purge performed on banned deviant's userpages weren't retroactive after the change in the ban system took effect. This is optional and in order to qualify for one, a deviant would have to screw up pretty bad, ignore all administrative warnings and blow numerous chances to comply with the policies. A data purge can also occur, if a once talented artist tried to appeal to their case, but the administrators made their final decision by denying their appeal and stated that they're no longer welcome on dA. A data purge includes a deviant's galleries (deviations/scraps), wishlist additions, favourites, journals, their friends and watched by list as well as their avatar and personal information. If a deviant was subscribed to dA prior to their banishment, their subscription would be terminated as well. Once a data purge was completed everything that a deviant worked so hard for is no longer existant leaving only the User Banned and the deviantART Notice boxes meaning that the account is longer good. * Administrators will still be able to view a banned deviant's account with everything on it regardless of the fact that a data purge occured on their account or not. * Lastly, banned deviants will have a ! infront of their username like it always has over the past five years.
Here are some drawbacks of what you can do while a deviant remains banned:
* You can only make replies to a recent journal entry on their activity log until the account becomes viewable again. * You can comment on their artwork and add it to your favourites while a deviant is banned as well despite the fact that their front page is inaccessable. * You can send a banned deviant notes, but they won't be able to reply to them. * You can add banned deviants to your watchlist by going to the Manage My Friends link in your message centre (in the right hand sidebar, under the my account subsection) will allow you to manually add banned deviants to your watch list. * Deviants prior to their banishment will show up in the Google Cache or the Internet Archive. If you want to view their history, read their journals and click on their comment number.
There are at last count over 28,800 permanently banned deviants who now have their userpages blocked from public view and that number is expected to grow as more deviants break the rules that they agreed to follow upon signup.
As for the deviants who were temporary banned in the past that's no more. Here's a run down of what a suspended deviant's userpage looks like:
* Their account will be viewable, their current statistics, personal information and work won't get touched at all. * All data is publically displayed on a suspended deviant's userpage, but the webcam and devious information won't be displayed. The devious comments field will be displayed but posting will be restricted meaning that there will be no Reply or Parent URL links or the devious thoughts comment box. * Ban lengths of 24 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks or 1 month will no longer be refered to as a "temporary warning ban", it will be referred to as a account suspension...meaning no interaction with dA at all with the exception of the Help Desk. Submitting a deviant ban inquiry is not necessary, but if there is a dispute over the reason of a deviant's suspension, that's the place to go. * Deviants who are suspended will not have a ! infront of their username. * Visitors and logged in users will display a public notice on the top right hand corner of their user page that reads, "User Suspended - This User Will Be Back Soon. FAQ: #610." and a suspended deviant will display how much time is their left on their suspension from dA and the reason for it as well. * Upon trying to submit anything, suspended deviants will display a error with the Fella mascot and a speech bubble that has their suspension timer on it. * Lengths of 24 hours and 1 week would be used for temporary insany or submitting something that the administrators didn't find acceptable. Lengths of 2 weeks and 1 month would be necessary for where an other normal deviant got involved in more serious situations where a stronger punishment on a temporary affair would be needed or where previos suspensions hasn't been heeded.
In closing, people feel that separating account suspensions from bans is a good idea...thus leading the banishment only as a last resort and for those that definitely deserved the punishment.
The number of suspended deviants will show up in the Google Cache and it will fluctuate as time goes on. If you want to view the links to a deviant's suspended userpage, go here.
It was fun looking at banned deviant's userpages, but things like this couldn't last forever. |

Lookie lookie at what was found on BinRev, a hacker community:
*LOL* Alright, so I might sound a little ranty here but I'm sure you would too... So last night I decided I would poke around deviantart, I get to the message center and notice in the url ?to= where is a username. Deviantart is nice enough to fill that in for you. Guess what? They don't parse that, so then I proceed to craft my special url. That url is:
http://my.deviantart.com/notes/?to=%22%3C/input%3E%3Ch1%3Ehay_there!%3C/h1%3E
Alright I figure, neat they suck at programming and I'll be nice and fill them in on this oftenly overlooked hole. I proceed to go into the chatroom they have set up called #seniors, and ask if any developers are around. A fellow by the name of Blue-Six responds stating he's a developer. I then tell him I've discovered an XSS vulnerability and posted the URL to him. Guess what then proceeded to happen? Yep, I get kicked from the chatroom with a message stating I fail. I fail at what? Your shitty coding fails. So I figure alright, maybe I can submit it under the help/site bugs. I proceed to do that, send them a message stating it would be possible to take over users sessions with javascript and this XSS vulnerability. What response do I get? None, I wake up this morning browse on over to deviantart.com and what is it I see? Site not found. I forget about it for awhile and come back, launch tor and whala! Site loads, vulnerabilities and all. Why are people such idiots? I'm trying to help you out, and you ban me from your crappy service? Well screw you, I'm not trying to be nice anymore, and I'm releasing your mistakes.
Back to the vulnerability and enough ranting... I'm pretty sure you can do the usual passing users cookies to off site script. So uhm, enjoy?
In English, hackers will make you click on a link that looks like it's a DA-link and harvest your cookie, then be able to log in as you. And DA doesn't only refuse to fix it, they BAN the person who was trying to make them aware of this serious security problem. This was in Oktober and nothing has been done.

I'm writing this to see if there is anyone in a similar situation, or who just might have some insight as to WTF is going on. Here goes: I have never been a member of deviantART. I have never been able to afford the subscription, and have only been able to browse and see the art that is created there (or not...). I recently discovered that there was the option for a free membership, which seemed awesome. I have not been able to complete said free membership because I keep getting told that I have been banned!! I really need to stress just how much I have never had a DA account! From reading some of the posts here, I'm becoming aware of how fickle DA is...but I seriously would like to know if anyone has run into a similar problem at any point. |

It's over.
Dreizhen was not banned due the drawings that she allegedly traced, but it was actually due to the fact that she was irrational and immature.
( Click here to read the actual reason why...Collapse )
In conclusion, artwork theft is not what got her banned, being irrational and immature was.

Sorry about the MASSIVE post. I'm not going to lose this battle, and I'll provide updates as they come. I miss the good ol' days of DAv2. It was almost a free world back then.
